Could have had him for less, but obviously it's a great value for arguably the best closer in baseball.

Not what he wanted, but thats a decent bump in pay for a player with his service time.

 

Chances are he was a year early with wanting an extension, I think the Sox where looking at next off season to extend him. If he pitches well this season like he has and stays healthy then he will have prooven he can stand the load and should be locked up long term. I expect a 5 yr 12-15M deal with maybe a couple option years for 8-10M. Its a comparable deal to what Corpas got from the Rox, this deal would surpass it but not by an exteme amount.

Not a bad amount for a guy who is an outstanding closer I'd say the Sox got him at a bargain price consider what he's actually worth.

Dave Solomon, who writes for the New Haven Register, blasted the Sox for not giving Paps what he was asking for. He says how can they quibble over $100k or so and insinuates that this will lead to a rift.

 

Solomon, mind you, is a Yankees fan. He blasts the Sox FO every chance he gets. More than that, apparently he doesn't understand that a FO sets a precedent that can burn them down the road if they you just give in.

I only read his articles when I need a good laugh. That paper is a waste of ink. The Hartford Courant should open a branch office down here and print a shoreline edition. The Rag and the Post would go under in no time.
