Even after yesterday’s impressive outing for Triple-A Pawtucket, Bartolo Colon is still one more start away from a major league call-up.

That means the Red Sox [team stats] will look to other in-house solutions - David Pauley and Charlie Zink are two Triple-A possibilities - to fill the open starter’s spot in the rotation Tuesday against the Royals.

A decision and announcement are expected from the Sox tonight.

Masterson, Colon to pitch

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff May 18, 2008 11:30 AM

The Red Sox have announced the starters for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, against the Kansas City Royals. Justin Masterson will be brought up on Tuesday, swapped with Chris Smith (who came up today). Then Masterson will return to the minors after the game, and Bartolo Colon will come up to the big league club and will pitch on Wednesday.

That leaves the rotation as follows for this week:

Sunday: Josh Beckett vs. Carlos Villanueva

Monday: Jon Lester vs. Luke Hochevar

Tuesday: Justin Masterson vs. Gil Meche

Wednesday: Bartolo Colon vs. Brett Tomko

Thursday: Daisuke Matsuzaka vs. Brian Bannister

Since Masterson's April 24 debut against the Angels, the starter has struggled with Portland. Over his last four starts, he has given up 16 earned runs in just 19 1/3 innings. He has taken the loss in three of those four games.

Sweet! Thats good news, I'm really excited to see what Colon can give us, although he still hasn't been completely stretched out as his last start he only threw 64 pitches. You gotta feel bad for Chris Smith though, getting sent down after a mere two day stint with the big league club.

I always hate it when I make posts that I later regret in bold size 7 font.

Mike Scocia told Gammons the following about Colon,

"Last year he was good for about eight starts before he ran out of gas".

That may happen again this year. But getting eight to ten starts from Colon, which would be a little over a month of work, may really help.

We'll see how Colon does. I truly hope he gets a chance to pitch against us. For some reason' date=' we pummel Colon.[/quote']

The Yankees saw Colon at his worst moments in 2006 (3-game losing streak) and 2007 (6-game losing streak), both seasons in which Colon pretty much sucked anyway (5.90 ERA, 7-13 W/L Record for the two years combined). In those two games Colon allowed 14 earned runs to the Yankees in 4 IP. :dunno:

Excepting those two games, Colon has pitched 11 other games against the Yankees, posting a 4.52 ERA. That's a pretty good ERA to get when facing the Yankees (or the Red Sox).

Colon no longer sucks. I would therefore consider your arrogant assumption that the Yankees "pummel Colon" to be, for want of a better word, hubris.

once Colon comes up, does he have to go through waivers or something to go back to Pawtucket or is the feeling that he'd be up here for good?

Colon is out of options and he's senior enough that he could refuse assignment even if he passed waivers.

He's not going back to Pawtucket.

interesting. I guess the team has found its Tavarez replacement then
Colon is not going to be a reliever. He has some major life in his arm, and he is motivated to get his career back on track.

right, but if the team is concerned about his arm getting gassed by the all-star break, why wouldnt they have him as the long reliever, unless they put Clay back in Pawtucket?

IMO he'll be the odd man out of the rotation who will get spot starts.

Whoa...strongly disagree with you there.

Clay Buchholz is probably going to inherit the mantle of staff ace from Beckett/Matsuzaka, whether it be this year or next year, if he stays healthy.

Buchholz had two bad starts and he hit the DL. No shame there. He had one bad start earlier vs. the Yankees, but he allowed only one walk. I already posted, in considerable detail, the trouble Buchholz had with umpiring his last start. Let's give the guy a chance.

That said...

...the correlation of two factors does disturb me:

1) His trouble is in road games, and

2) If you check the Red Sox celebration photos at their parties last October, Buchholz was completely trashed.

I hope that it's not an issue, but we could have another Derek Lowe-type problem.

Career split for Clay:

Home: 4-0, 1.39 ERA

Road: 1-4, 6.89 ERA

But give the kid some time, OK? :dunno:

Not to burst your bubble' date=' but he was topping out at 86 mph in winter ball. 15 teams sent scouts to his starts, none signed him. If he isnt touching 95, he's useless. The rest of his arsenal isnt good enough to stand on its own.[/quote']

Not to burst your bubble, but don't you wish your F.O. was smart enough to make this move?

the yankee front office has been the biggest abortion since gene michael left

steinberger surrounds himself with asswipes, douchebags and assorted other yes men.

when the season ends he looks east, wonders what the sox need and who finished with the best stats in pitching and offense, then opens his checkbook.

they havent made a sound move since they traded roberto""bobby""kelly for paul oneil.

Jon Lester is just the latest example of how people just need to give young pitchers time to develop. And that's not just because of his no hitter, he's allowed 6 earned runs in his last 5 starts.

And about the Clay being trashed at celebratory parties, big deal. I think Paps had a few pops before his performance that made him a riverdancing icon, thats just what ballplayers do

Buchholz is what' date=' 23? 23 year olds drink alcohol from time to time.[/quote']

Yup. And Derek Lowe drank alcohol until 4:00 AM before starting a 1:00 PM Yankees game, too.

The home-road split is a small sample thus far. We'll watch it.

I dont care what guys do off-field anyway. as long as they bring their A game to the mound

Agree.

David Wells threw a perfect game in the bag/hungover.

Who cares if they drink....I do, and I do my job everyday, and yes I do miss Derek Lowe and his off the field stories.

we'll see. Sounds like the heater is all the way back. How long he can keep it there will determine his success. As a 97mph flamethrower, he's useful. If he's throwing low 90s, he'll get torched.

Hmm...Colon is no good. Let's see how well you predict other pitchers' accomplishments:

That being said' date=' those who poo-poo Hughes but hype Buchholz are nuts. Buchholz has a lot to prove, but he certainly has the goods to do so. We shall see how he holds up through the grueling stretch of 162. Lester OTOH, I have been unimpressed by stuff wise. I think he is a fantastic human being in his triumph over cancer, but I am absolutely not sold on his stuff. He is a kid who lives off his curve, yet has poor command of his fastball. Couple that with his career 1.57WHIP and you have the makings of a kid who needs to either improve or get shillacked. He doesnt have the stuff to live as dangerously as he has thus far.[/quote']

Lester=Kennedy

You are relying on Buchholz and Lester to stay in the rotation for the entire yr. To say that these kids are any more likely to hold down a spot for the yr than our kids is homerism.

Yankees: Hughes, Kennedy, Chamberlain

Red Sox: Buchholz, Lester, Hansen, Delcarmen

How would you guys rank them, one through seven? For not only next year, but for their careers?

I'm curious as to your opinions. Let's hear them folks.

Chamberlain, Hughes, Buchholz, Kennedy, Lester, Delcarmen, Hansen

We are doomed if Joba' date=' Kennedy and Hughes arent at least MLB average...What I do know is that our offense and your pen on paper look better than the other. Thats it.[/quote']

 At least you got that "doomed" part right.
