Actually he gave in a bit. That number is lower then the half way point between what he wanted and the Sox offered. It's a good deal. I really don't see the Sox giving Youk a big extension. Especially if Anderson develops some power and a good bat.

I think we have seen the ceiling of Youk. I expect him to perform right around where he is now. Which isn't bad at all, but if some kid comes threw the system with 30+HR potential, I don't think the Sox would let Youk block them.

You can not be a fan of someone but acknowledge that at the moment there isn't anyone on the roster or in the system who could be playing his position. I'm not in favor of a long term deal for Youk for a few reasons, I also could see some scenarios where he does stay long term that I'd be happy about, like if we dealt Lars mid-season for a spark.

I would use to say that with our lineup we didnt need a 30+ hr threat at first base because of having Manny and Ortiz in the middle of the lineup. However, with Manny nearing the end we need to start looking for a middle of the lineup power hitter to replace Manny with. That may require moving Youk at some point to fill that void.

Hard to beleive that with all of his production last season he only made $424,000. 3 million sounds about right for a short term deal.

You're not a Youk fan' date=' hmm? who would you rather play 1st?[/quote']

For certain? Albert Pujols and Mark Teixeira. Maybe Prince Fielder.

Probably? Prince Fielder, for sure...Lance Berkman, Adrian Gonzalez, Ryan Howard, or Justin Morneau. Maybe Derrek Lee or Carlos Pena.

Kevin Youkilis fits the Boston Red Sox. He has great OBP and great defensive range down the critical right field line in Fenway. He hits a few home runs and drives a few doubles, and he's OK for team chemistry...we could do way worse, especially for a paltry three million dollars.

I'm happy. :D

An advantage of Youk's is his versitality. He could slide over to 3rd base when Lowell's contract is up, also to make room for the more potential 1st baseman slugger in Lars Anderson. Nice to think of, a homegrown infield of Landerson, Pedroia, Lowrie, and Youkilis
