Congress asks probe of Miguel Tejada

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080115/ap_on_sp_ba_ne/bbo_congress_steroids

See - they don't care if someone used steroid - but they do care if he/she lies under oath. While I think that we do have bigger issues at Capital Hills - I see why Congress is so serious with this - it sends a wrong message to the citizens about our justice system if athletes can get away with lying.

So - uh Mr. Clemens - still gonna testify to Congress under oath as you said in that news conference- right?

Posted
They need to start investigating everyone who was on that list.

Again - this investigation is because Congress thinks that Tejada lied under oath. I think they will not care if someone (Pettitte/Roberts) says ' Yes I am on the list and I did HGH'.

Posted
Hopefully this congressional investigation will have some teeth, unlike Bud Selig's circus investigation, headed by his close friend and personal ring master Senator Mitchell. The way today is starting off on the Hill though, I doubt this investigation will go anywhere. If Bud is allowed to keep answering "We're looking into that" without any tough follow-up, this is all a waste of time. Selig and his stooges have been "looking into" many things over the years, the problem is, they never reach a conclusion or take any action, until/unless Congress steps in and threatens to clean things up themselves.

I understand that, I'm just saying in general, they need to start investigating everyone who was on the list. Regardless of Tejada's oath.

Thumper

Do they investigate only the ballplayers that were named in the Mitchell Report or all people who had knowledge of PED use in the report?

they need to get to serious and tend to things that are more important.

we're fighting 2 f***ing wars and are possibly on the verge of a 3rd.

oil has tripled

ceo's can run a company into the ground, get a 200M parachute while the pension funds are bankrupted, raped and left empty.

we have the biggest housing crisis since the 30s and the market lost 1500 points since october

and congress is going to get to the bottom of the most pressing issues facing americans citizens....

whether or not roger clemens or miguel tejada used steroids over 5 years ago?

my God

this country need an enema and its citizens a f***ing bitch slap back to reality in a hurry.

I'll just disagree w/ point 1. The market always runs cyclical. Always. Greed is Good. Or not so much for those who gambled and lost. Say you lay down 300 for the Pats to win by 13. They win by 12.5. I don't think the International Foundation of Bookies. The IFOB if you will subsidized by the taxpayers will say...heck SP. You should have known that perhaps...just perhaps they wouldn't cover so we'll give you your money back and tuck you in at bedtime. You sign a contract. You sign a contract. This isn't about LaQuisha the night health aide buying a 625,000 duplex in The Dot making 7.15/hr. Who is still responsible by the way. It's about people taking out no interest loans, gambling against equity they didn't have and BETTING that the market would bear out. And they would triple their money. Speculators. Arizona tract house buyers. We'll live off the fat of the land Lenny. Gambled...lost.

Not...predatory lenders. The scourge of the world as they are every 25 years or so. Why anyone w/ the sense of a gnat would get anything but a fixed rate w/ as much money as you can put down is beyond me. Particularly during those heady times w/ rates around 4. I waited a very very long time to buy a house. I bought within my means. I bought smart. On my own. It's increased in value 3 fold despite the current market. Bought it to buy and hold. Got the whole the market dips and curves thing. Would I have liked a 8 room mansion w/ a pool and a cabana boy named Hector. Yes. I shouldn't get screwed because other people are dumb. If you can't afford a house. You can't afford a house. The have to have it now generation. No you don't. I also think those people shouldn't be allowed to procreate but that's just me. I don't want to bail them out. I don't want to bail Amtrak out. Or the airlines. Take care of business or perish. Your other points...no doubt we are the most stupid nation ever in the history of civilization and we're screwed.

The worst thing you can do is punish successful people. They drive the economy. Witness the mass migration out of well Mass. The anger towards big oil and the "fat cats" I find humorous. Generally promulgated by those who couldn't find success if it bit them in the ass. This steroid issue is a conspiracy run by the D.O.D who are also on top of Britney...so to speak and probably literally daily.

Posted

I also find humorous the anger directed at local utility companies, particularly electric. As regulated entities, these companies are allowed to recover their costs of operation plus a pre-determined rate of return on their investments. Typically, if they exceed that allowed rate of return there is some sort of sharing mechanism or refund of the over-earnings.

Since the legislators saw fit to de-regulate the electric utility market, and fuel prices went through the roof, our electric bills have risen dramatically. But it's primarily the generation portion of electric bills that is driving the massive increases...and these dollars do NOT go to your local electric distributor...they go to the generators of electricity, the Dukes, Constellations, etc. Combine this with "federally mandated congestion charges" (which reflect that our transmission systems are having difficulty delivering the demanded MWHs of energy) and you have radidly rising prices. Yet the distribution Company catches all the s***, because people just don't care to understand how market works.

As for housing and rates? I'm at 4.5% fixed which we got when we purchased of our modest raised ranch on a cul de sac loaded with kids for about $180k 6 or 7 years ago. Zillow.com says the house is worth $380k now. Not bad. We had wanted the 8 room colonial on an acre...but scaled our goals back and got a decent home in a great area, good schools, tree-lined streets, etc. Meanwhile, my wife has remained a stay at home mom, but is back in school to become an RN.

You can make ends meet if you are smart, conservative and don't require every gadget ever known to mankind. It is uUnfortunate that the government is now expected by some to bail out those who could not or will not live within their own means.

I've done my best to not end up in the situation some others have...why should I have to foot their bill?

I agree with you totally. Living outside the US has given me a different perspective of how our Country is being run. This investigation seems like a bunch of Q tips trying to get good Pub before an election run. This also seems like a distraction they are using. In one hand we have War issues, Economy issues, Housing issues, the Oil debacle, the fact the American $ is worth less then the Canadian currency. In the other hand we are fighting PEDS in our sporting events. Talk about a follow the birdie scenario.

I know alot on here could care less about politics and these types of issues but America has become pretty much a standing joke outside of America. Alot of companys are starting to switch to the Euro as there main currency. People don't understand the dramatic effect this could have. The $ could very well end up being worth about as much as the Yen. basically worthless. Which leads to much bigger issues with the economy.

America is at a big cross roads, hopefully the focus there attention and resources on things that need it...

good to see some common sense out here

the average joe has been taking it in the ass since that f***ing dolt reagan deregulated the banks(and the oil companies)....

its a fact

americans are too f***ing stupid to be allowed to bank in a world of sharks

if the neil bush/silverado/ clinton/hubbell whitewater related s&l scandals of the 80s didnt wake people up to the unmitigated greed and consequential stupidity of the banking industry then maybe the tyco/enron/you name it scandals shouldve got congress off their collective asses and start publically hanging the andrew fastows.dennis koslowski's of the world

maybe this latest lending crisis will prompt some new regulations as we,the people cannot tolerate any more of banking stupidity.

or maybe we can focus on mlb and its steroid issues as we get bent over the kitchen sink while jamaal goes balls deep in your keyster then your wallet...

ya

im sick of it

people who are for limited government and the deregulation of banks are failing to grasp the essense of the ignorant people......

25 years into the game the deregulation of banks isnt a success..

its a f***ing middle class catastrophe

how many banks are left in this country?

4??

YES

I DO KNOW BETTER THAN THEM...

jim

are you saying if i have 7k in monthly obligations and make 60k a year i got issues?

f***in a right crime pays....sometimes

my 94 neon that i met wells with back in 04 is still burning up the roads and the 03 chevy ventura that i bought brand new for 15,8 with roll down windowns and no options got paid for in full back in 05....i keep the van insured but the car wasnt worth 200.00 when i bought it back in ....i dont remember when i bought that s*** box but ive hated every moment ive spent in it and i still cant kill the bitch....

and mitt romney, the man who says he has automobiles in his blood, just won in michigan and he won according to the experts, on issues.....

flint michigan has the infant mortality rate of bangladesh

inner detroit a pathetic display of urban blight and they, the poorest, most suffering sunsabitches in the nation outside east st louis reach out to ward f***ing cleaver??

a union bustin corporate raider who was one of the origial architechts of the 39.5 hour part time work week....and they voted for him based on the issues....

when he was watching his father walking with dr king at the grosse point yacht club 40 years ago old willard mustve made a lot of friends...

sometimes you pray that people get a break

guys you beat like a drum on the pool table or the card table or on the football games deserve a break and you feel like its their turn to be blessed.

then i remember psalm 69 as written by dr danielo d'amico

""f***em where he eats""

so to the good people of michigan

The families of four making $60k combined and trying to have a life too...i feel bad for.

I was at a happy hour recently...my co-workers... (the hubby and wife work at the same company) make $150k combined, so they're doing ok, but not rich. Unfortunately they want to live high on the hog, as they put in a built-in pool ($70k), each drives a brand new SUV, they go on three island/cruise/beach vacations each year (although they're going to Paris this summer instead of "the shore"), living in their $600k house. They had the audacity to complain that it's so hard to make ends meet and that their variable rate was going up again.

Didn't see this coming, Mr. and Mrs. Dickweed? These are the folks that really bug me.

i got a friend who lives in conn called dinkweed

his grandfather invented glow sticks and he and his siblings get 10K on the 1st of every year as a gift....

as rician points out

some people arent capable of basic math despite spending 200K getting educated.

i'd like to gut out my cellar and sink a pool in there

with my connections in the construction industry i can get it done real cheap and if i stop going to the coffee shop in the morning i can save 18.45 a week and apply it to the pool fund!!!

it seems to me the more people have the more they want and money is never an issue anymore because of plastic credit lines.

and i think back to my dad being out on strike with the phone company back in the 70s and my mother denying us our 10cent a day allowance because of the financial crisis we were going thru??

My Dad too was a phone man. I found old 1040's in the attic once when I was a kid...he didn't make s***. We lived lean, but lived in a great neighborhood and understood that it was the little things that counted. We'd be driving by McDonalds and my Dad would say "don't even ask." We took one vacation per year, usually one week on the Jersey shore (Brigantine).

At his funeral I delivered a eulogy recounting all the good times and his virtues when all I should have said was "Thanks Dad."

my dad was an ibew stewart and was a real prick to the company on safety issues

he was an electrician

he left a foundry gig here making 85.00 a week for a 50.00 a week gig with ma bell.

these were hard men back in the day

they went out on strike for a year in 68.......talk about iron balled men??

these guys didnt start getting paid till the 80s and these men took the hit for the new guys who would sell their souls for an extra .25c an hour.

the american labor movement needs some restructuring if not some violent confrontations.

can you imagine an enron happening up here?

there would be blood all over

this will teach them how to rely on each other and perservere under less than stellar conditions.
