Thought I will open a seperate thread on this :

Twins offered him a 5 year deal per roto. Personally I think he is going to piss on this offer and send it back.

The Twins have reportedly offered Johan Santana a five-year deal worth $93 million.

That'd be far better than the two-year extension they offered him months ago. Still, it's not nearly enough for baseball's best pitcher. Santana should command a deal worth somewhere between $150 million and $200 million when he becomes a free agent next winter.

A first offer of $18.6m per year for 5 years is an insult?

Let's see...if he "should command $150-200m" if and when he becomes a FA, what does that work out to?

Somewhere between $22m per for 7 years to $25m/yr for 8 years? Best pitcher in MLB notwithstanding, that's a lotta coin and a lotta years. One injury and the dude could be done.

Personally, I don't think that the rumored first offer by the Twins is that far off.

with the way the market is today santana will easily get a 150 million $ contract , so yeah id say 93 mil is an insult..... well ok it may not be an insult BUT you know what I mean

Look at it from the Twins FO point of view. They can't come out of the blocks with a huge offer because any player/agent is going to only go up...significantly..from there.

As a first offer, I hardly consider it an insult. Of course, if the player goes to the media afterward and says it was an insult then he likely wanted out anyway...and that's the way he's chosen to get out.

Its a business and the offer reflects that reality.

I won't say it is exactly an insult but he will make almost same as Zito with Zito having 2 more years?

Come on.

Zito has arguably the most ridiculous contract ever given to a player, A-Rod included

Contracts are driven by market demands and supplies. I doubt owners willingly write checks of millions to ball players they don't have much options. Obviously you can argue how much these players are really worth - I am with you there.

I will keep using this thread for Santana news as this was the first one as well I believe the thread should be here not in the other forum.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, after receiving a five-year, $93 million offer from the Twins, Johan Santana made a counter-offer for $126 million.

If true, then he's being very reasonable about his demands given that Barry Zito signed for $126 million last offseason. Santana figures to command over $150 million on the open market and could conceivably get closer to $200 million if he pitches well in 2008. The news is seemingly positive in regard to the Twins' chances of re-signing him, but the newspaper also reports that "other teams have found he is no longer off limits in trade discussions."
