The Arizona Fall league will start soon and Red Sox prospects RHP Craig Hansen, RHP Jose Vaquedano, LHP Hunter Jones, C Dusty Brown, 2B/SS Jed Lowrie and 1B/C Jon Still will be playing for Mesa Solar Sox.

The Dominican Winter league hold its annual rookie draft a few weeks ago and one of the players drafted was a catcher by the name of Raymundo Tavarez. Tavarez was listed by mistake as a member of the Red Sox organization instead of the Chicago White Sox.

As I posted back a few months ago because of economic reasons the Puerto Rican Winter league won't be in operation in 2007.

Rotoworld its reporting that OF Sean Danieldson is the player that the Red Sox are receiving from the Cardinalds in the Joel Pineiro trade. Danieldson who is 25 yrs played in AA in 2007.

According to RW:

"Danielson, whi turned 25 in August, hit .291/.370/.384 with a 41/38 K/BB ratio in 320 at-bats for Double-A Springfield last season. He's a long shot to have a career as a fifth outfielder."

Scaff this is incorrect.

Martinez, Jackson, Breslow, Cash, Corey, Hansack, Snyder and Pauley are on the 40 man roster and hence cannot be resigned by another team, unless they are removed from the roster.

Smith, Spann, and Vaquendano. aren't minor league free agents either. A player only becomes a minor league free agent after he has completed 6 full minor league seasons. Hence for players drafted in the 2002 draft, their first season in minor league baseball does not count as a full minor league season. These three will become minor league free agents after next season if they are not placed on the 40 man roster.

Only players drafted in the 2001 draft or signed before the 2002 season are eligible for minor league free agency.

If a player plays from 2002 to 2007 in the minors that will be 6 years of minor league ball, that includes time played after been drafted and signed even if its time played in short scheduled league or the Latin leagues. The group of players that I mentioned above have played minor league ball for six years which would make them 6 years minor league free agents unless they are placed on a 40 man roster or gets resigned.

The group of players that you are talking about where in the 40 man roster for 2007, in the Fall the 40 man roster will get set up again and some of those players aren't likely to make the 40 man roster for 2008.

Argenis Diaz who is the best defensive short stop in the Red Sox system is leading the Hawaii Winter league in hitting after 9 games with a 438 Ave 32 AB 14 H 4 R 7 RBI, on the other hand RHP Craig Hansen continues with pitching issues and in 2G 2 IP 5 H (2 HR) 3R 3 ER 0 Bb 1 K and a 455 batting average against.

I'm sorry Scaff but you are just dead wrong.

http://www.brewerfan.net/ViewFreeAgency.do

Six (6) years after a minor league player’s first season ends with an organization, if the player is not on the major league 40-man roster, he is eligible for minor league free agency. (If a player is on the 40-man roster, this rule does not apply.) Sometimes referred to as a “six-year minor league free agent,” the name comes from six renewable years on a player’s contract.

The rules differ for players who have been released by their first organization before the expiration of the six-year period. When a player signs with a new club, the new club can choose to sign the player for however many years remain before the expiration of their sixth renewable contract.

Players from the 2002 draft are not eligible for minor league free agency because they would have less than 6 full years of professional service time. It works the same way for major league free agency. You aren't a free agent unless you have 6 full years of major league service time. IOW, players called up in July of 02, aren't free agents in 07 as 02 didn't count as a full year of service time. Same rule applies.

A player has 6 renewable years on his contract the players I mentioned have only had five.

This is wrong too. The Red Sox don't reset the 40 man roster, its a flow as opposed to stock.

The Red Sox will keep every guy they can on the 40 man roster though some might be released or DFA'd soon after the season. In the minors only Beau Vaughn and Travis Hughes are candidates to be added to the 40 man roster.

Before you keep arguing read the rules, just because a players its on the 40 man roster it doesn't means that a player will be kept on the 40 man roster, organizations every fall ads and drop players from the roster and again you're wrong Vaughn and Hughes aren't the only player that can be added to the 40 man roster.

The Red Sox Florida instructional league opened up almost a month ago, DSL graduates Cesar Cabral (LHP) Yeiper Castillo (RHP) Randy Consuegra (RHP) Stolmy Pimentel (RHP) Leandro Marin (RHP) and Ronald Bermudez (OF) are in camp, but a couple of names that are surprising missing are Dennis Newman (RHP) Manuel Rivera (LHP) Anataner Batista (RHP) and Roberto Feliz (OF). Marin didn't pitched in almost two years with an injury before able to pitch in three games at the end of the season. Thomas Pressly (RHP) Adam Mills (RHP) Eamon Portice (RHP) and David Marks are the only top draft picks from the June draft not in Camp. Oscar Tejeda and Yamaico Navarro are in camp along with recent Bonus baby Michael Almanzar.

Scaf, when does the Instructional League season end? I'm going to be in Fort Myers from the 23rd through the 26th and hope to catch the tail end of the league season.

AZBlue, I don't have the specific day that Instructional league ends, but usually its a few days after mid October, so you may be able to see a game or two.

In their first off season move the Red Sox claimed LHP Jay Marshall from the A's. Marshall a soft thrower reliever is a 24 yrs 6-5 185 who was selected in the 2006 by the A's in the rule five draft despite not having pitched no higher than the Carolina league (High A) Marshall is expected to go back to the minors in 2008 perhaps to Portland. In order to claim Marshall the Sox had to designate LHP Daniel Haigwood for assigment.

So I guess you admit that you were wrong about six year minor league free agents and stipulate to that.

Anyone can be removed from the 40 man roster at any time for any reason. As a practical matter however, the Sox aren't going to remove any six year minor league free agents unless they are forced to create a roster spot for someone or they just don't want the player.

The Sox can add anyone they want to the 40 man roster, but the only players in the system who are both eligible for the Rule Five draft and/or minor league free agency that you'd even think about giving roster spots to are Hughes and Vaughn. Guys like Vaquendo and Spann are eligible for Rule Five but they aren't going on the 40 man roster.

Immediately after the season, Timlin, Mirabelli, Schilling, Lowell, Tavarez, Gagne, Hinske and Clayton are likely off the 40 man and they will likely add Hughes and Vaughn. I'd assume that Snyder is either non-tendered, released or traded. They probably get a rule five pick and sign three or four free agents.

As you can see there is plenty of room on the roster for guys like Breslow, Hughes, and Corey to go to Ft. Myers with the team in the spring.

Scaffolds-

In general you have a right to your opinion as this is an open forum after all. However you shouldn't dismiss the opinion of others on the basis that you have special knowledge that other posters don't have. If I don't agree that a player not being called up in September has anything to do with the chances that he will be added to the 40 man roster, and your response is that you have special industry knowledge, expect to be challenged on that. I personally don't believe that you have special industry knowledge.

According to the Boston Glove the Sox have resigned catcher Dusty Brown and have place him in the Red Sox 40 man roster. Brown would had been a six year minor league free agen id he hadn't resign. According to rumors the Sox have resigned others who would had been minor league free agents.

I guess Hansen remains an enigma. 8 K's in 5 innings of work, only 1 walk, but a nearly 6 era, with 2 HRs given up?

A couple other notes:

Bard...15 Ks and 15 walks in 16+ IP...5 hit batters...but only a .136 BAA. Guess they can't hit you when they're afraid of losing their heads.

Oh, and Jed Lowrie hit like s***.
