Wasn't that the speculation all along, with Ellsbury going back down after Friday and the Sox purchasing Keilty's contract?

Wily Mo Pena has been traded to the Nationals, according to the Boston Herald.

So there was one team out there that wanted to take a chance on his power, and it comes as little surprise as it's the one run by Jim Bowden. Pena should get an extended look in a corner over the rest of the season, making him worth picking up in NL-only leagues. Nook Logan figures to lose playing time, with Ryan Church moving to center

I wish him well in Washington. Yes I know the year will come, probably 2008 where he has a breakout year and hits 30+ HRs. Still fully know that it couldnt have happened up in Boston where there is a logjam of outfielders. Also not a team that can give him the patience that is needed for him to thrive

Could he had been traded for Nick Johnson?

if Theo decided to throw in a BJ and a small vietnamese harem, maybe. WHen healthy, Nick Johnson is a franchise player for them. There is no way they dealt him, none.

rumor has it, the sox are actually getting someone of value. Chris Carter, the 1b who was formerly with the dbacks and someone the yankees were close to obtaining in the Randy Johnson deal is a candidate to be sent back to Boston. He is a masher, who is very much like Shelley Duncan. Great power, good eye, horrible defense. That would be a solid trade for the sox since Carter is far more advanced in his hitting approach than Pena.

Damn, poor guy

Nationals GM Jim Bowden said the newly acquired Wily Mo Pena will platoon with Ryan Church in left field.

That doesn't make much sense. It should be obvious to everyone by now that Pena needs more at-bats to succeed, and he's just not going to be very useful while starting twice per week. The Nationals were all set to play Church in center to make room for Alex Escobar before Escobar's setback. Why wouldn't they do the same thing with Pena, a player with quite a bit more upside? Maybe it will happen if Pena gets off to a good start.

Heck of a deal if true. Carter, currently in Triple A, this year has hit 18 HRs/81 RBIs. Like Pena, his greatest folly is his defense. Still if made Carter could be seen as the 2008 starting 1st baseman with Youkilis sliding over to 3rd. In fantasy world if Arod was acquired, both Youk and Lowell would be off with other teams

It doesn't make much sense for the Nationals, to be honest. Why would they trade a guy of some value for someone the Sox were getting rid of anyways after they signed Kielty. Considering that Bowdon is notorious for overpricing his players in making a deal, I'd be surprised.

That being said, I wish Wily Mo luck.

According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox might be getting Arizona's Chris Carter from the Nationals in return for Wily Mo Pena.

Leave it to the Red Sox to try to turn a seemingly minor deal into a three-way trade. Carter, who turns 25 next month, is batting .328/.385/.531 for Triple-A Tucson. The first baseman is expendable in Arizona, so the Nationals might have a deal in place to get him in return for a pitching prospect. It's unclear whether the trade has any chance of being completed now or if it will have to wait until October, when waivers with no longer be a factor.

Wily Mo Pena doubled, walked and scored two runs Saturday in his Nationals debut.

A decent first impression. Pena likely will sit Sunday against right-hander Orlando Hernandez. That'd be a poor matchup for him anyway.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but how can wily mo be traded after the trade deadline?

Again im not a whiz at this stuff, just a question.

It's not a trade deadline. July 31 is the non-waiver trade deadline. That means teams can trade players without having to pass them through waivers. From 8/1 to 8/31, a player must be passed through waivers prior to being traded.

So what about Bobby Kielty is he going to stay in the Big's to take the place of Pena.? or is he just a temporary guy.
