The real problem is that the yankees have been surging since the all-star break. The lead in the east has gone from 12 games to 6.5 in a very small amount of time. Splitting series or losing games such as last night's due to mental mistakes just can't happen if the sox hope to make the playoffs much less make a run at the series. The yankees may have a weak pitching staff and whatnot, but then again the season is far from over and if the sox go into cruise control they'll find themselves sitting at home come October.

The Yankees have gone 6-0 this week and they've gained 1 game. That means that if this rate continues (with the Sox schedule getting even easier), the Yankees could win every game for the next 6weeks and they'd still be .5 out.

The sky's not falling guys. The lead was bound to shrink down around 5-6 games at some point.
