I know you disagree' date=' but I think he bring stability to the pitching staff, and I also think he is a good game caller, even though his game calling abilites are overated by the media.[/quote']

his defense is average and he is terrible as a throwing catcher. He doesnt earn that paycheck, but none of these guys really do.

Forget what the media says. The pitchers say how important he is.

Dice-K asked his agent for a Varitek jersey b4 he was signed.

Why the hell would Dice-K want a Varitek Jersey?

So are they going to let him rot at triple A' date=' I think a reasonable deal could be made, maybe involving Pedroia. I don't know I just don't think Dustin is going to make it here. From about the 3 months I have seen of him he doesn't look very good.[/quote']

In past workings with the D-rays, they have asked for the moon. All of a suden they'll just kneel before theo and offer a straight up reasonable deal to help out a division rival.

The D-rays already have a surplus of infielders & outfielders, they desire what their weakness has always been... pitching

About Dustin i still see him taking some really good swings that are lined right at the opposing players on the field. Its funny last year up until the middle of May, members on this board were pondering a trade for a 2nd baseman because Loretta was struggling, Sox stuck to their guns through that long drought. Pedroia has always had slow starts to seasons/promotions, patience is a virtue.

The D-Rays will drive Cantu to Boston if the Red Sox offer them Pedroia straight up. Cantu is an absolute butcher with the glove, and his power is average for a corner IF.

Pedroia will not hit under .200, he makes good contact, and maintains a very good OBP. His BABIP is very low, and should rise as the season progresses, which will raise his batting average.

BTW, Jorge Cantu is OBPing a woeful .276, and has fanned 13 times in 52 AB's.

Maybe you are right, at least Lorreta had a track record. Pedroia has a power hitters swing and he is not a power hitter, thats the problem I see with him.

That's pretty much where I was going with it' date=' but I don't see him everyday like you guys do. I take it you're not a Varitek supporter Crespo.[/quote']

No, but replacing Varitek with Mirabelli is insane.

Look, Varitek brings no stability to the pitching staff. The talent of the pitcher has 99.9% of how good a catcher looks calling the game.

You could put any catcher behind the plate for the Red Sox, and the ERA would barely move.

Cantu had a great year in 05 and put up ok numbers in limited action due to an injury that he sustained early last season. Maybe he is struggling at AAA because he doesnt want to be their and is unhappy. It happens to players when they are demotted.

You are wrong on this one Crespo, Varitek is so important to the pitching staff, just looked what happened when he went down last August, everyone sucked. You are right, that pitchers have to pitch but it helps when your catcher knows the hitters so well.

Cantu had a great year in 05

A great year? I'm going to call fluke. He walked 19 times in 2005. Why would anyone throw this guy a strike?

If you look further at his stats, his OPS+, OBP, EQA, etc. it shows that he was above average.

2005

OPS+ - 112 (which is inflated, because OBP is probably 4X as valuable then SLG%)

OBP - .311 (!)

EQA - .286

FRAA - -10

and put up ok numbers in limited action due to an injury that he sustained early last season.

What were you watching? He was f***ing atrocious in 2006. He OBP'd .295, had an OPS+ of 76, and EQA'd .248.

Maybe he is struggling at AAA because he doesnt want to be their and is unhappy. It happens to players when they are demotted.

I really hope that isn't the case. He better play his ass off, because he has NO future in Tampa Bay. Unless he learns what a strike is, of course.

 Next year he is going to be the most hated guy in New York. You can bet your bottom dollar he's opting out, getting a monster deal, and saying f*** you to all the Yankee fans like he's wanted to. If I were him, I wouldn't have even give them half of the curtain calls that he did.

I disagree.

Really? And why is that?

I don't trust what ballplayers say. They often say what will either, please the media, or make their teammates look good.

Another example of why catchers don't mean s*** to ERA. A.J. Pierzynski was massacred by the media for his lack of game calling skills when he was with the Giants. (see below)

Free-agent acquisition A.J. Pierzynski struggled throwing out runners last season and was criticized by Giants pitchers for how he handled the staff.

If that is true, that can someone please tell me, how the f*** the White Sox had a 3.61 pitching staff ERA in 2005?

You think that maybe Kevin Jarvis, Kyle Snyder, Jason Johnson, and all those mixed bags of s*** throwing pitches for the Red Sox helped with that?

If Tim Wakefield, Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling, and whoever the hell was pitching in 2005 saw their ERA's skyrocket by 1 or 2 runs when Varitek was out then your argument would have some merit, but it didn't, so your argument has none.

Oh, and I will tell you when I am wrong. You do not have the luxury of asserting that.
