The Patriots continued their offseason spending spree, adding wide receiver Donte' Stallworth to their 2007 haul, a league source told ESPN.com's Michael Smith.

Stallworth will sign a six-year contract. The deal is believed to be worth a little more that $30 million with close to $12 million guaranteed, the source told Smith.

Stallworth, who played last season in Philadelphia after being acquired from the New Orleans Saints, also was being courted by the Eagles, Dolphins and Titans.

Stallworth, 28, had 38 catches for 725 yards and five touchdowns for the Eagles in 2006. A first-round choice of the Saints in the 2002 draft, he has 233 career receptions for 3,516 yards and 28 touchdowns in 68 games, including 44 starts.

League and union officials are investigating a Philadelphia Inquirer report that Stallworth is in the NFL's substance-abuse program, sources from both parties told ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli.

Citing unnamed sources, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday that Stallworth is a participant in the league program, and that he could be subject to suspension if he suffered a repeat violation of its conditions. The newspaper also reported that a breach of the program's confidentiality agreement can warrant a league fine, and NFL and NFL Players Association officials began to seek out possible sources for the leak on Monday.

The Patriots have been busy this offseason, adding coveted linebacker Adalius Thomas, ranked No. 2 on ESPN.com's list of free agents, as well as Dolphins kick returner/receiver Wes Welker, tight end Kyle Brady and backup running back Sammy Morris.

i dont know about this

he has alot of talent, but hasnt put it all together yet. Signing a guy who to a 6 year deal worth $30 million, who in his 5 year career has averaged 45 catches a year??

Pats are really going all out this offseason. I dont think there was really a need for this, i mean we were so close to winning another super bowl with Jabar Gaffney and Reche Caldwell. And the reason we lost wasnt cause of them.

And most receivers who come into New England see them improve their career numbers with Brady at the helm. The Pats now have a receiving corps of Stallworth, Welker, Caldwell, Gaffney, Jackson, and the bench guys (Kight, Childress). At tight end they have the young solid duo of Watson & Thomas. They have only improved themselves and continue to bulk up the possibility of being a force to reckon with in the playoffs

And Beckett the 6 years of course like other NFL contracts arent guaranteed.

i do like that we now have 4 capable NFL receivers, just not sure if the contract is appropriate for him. I think if we can find a legit back-up RB now we could have one of the best offenses in the NFL.

Im hoping to that we draft a offense of tackle in the first round of the draft. theres noone on the other side of Light. Kaczur/O'Callaghan werent realy cutting it last year. Draft a guy like Arron Sears (or maybe Joe Staley, who had a great combine) with one of those first rounders, then go get a DB or LB with the other one.

then i think this team will be looking very good heading into next year

This signing will sincerely hurt the rest of the league. What is the one thing the pats have lost with Deion Branch leaving? They had no deep threat. Stallworth is a big guy with blazing speed. You have him to stretch the field and Welker as the possession guy. They arent spectacular or anything, but now Brady has the weapons he needs to be amazing. Look for Welker to have 9-10TD's next yr and Stallworth to be around 1000-1100 yards.

Great signing since he was the best guy available but the Patriots still don't have a number one caliber receiver. Hope you guys have good doctors in the area -- has the guy ever played a complete season?

But the Patriots have the cap room and they don't need to immediately improve anywhere else to be a contender so I do think it was a great signing.

The same was said last year and Caldwell (lesser talent than Stallworth) did enough for the Pats as they came very close to winning their 4th superbowl in the last 6 years. Tom should have himself a much better receiving corps than the one that started the 2006 season.

It appears he might just be in New England for 2007. This season he will be making $3.6 million. If they wish to retain his services for 2008 they must tack on a $6 million bonus, making his salary at $11 million for that season.

By the way hope you have a good doctor too for Daniel Graham who signed the same type of deal but more money guaranteed, i kid ;)

It's basically a one yr deal tho, he will be a FA or be asked to restructure the deal after this season. Hes owed like 11M for the 2nd season of the contract, so I doubt he will see it, but for next season its a great sign, Stallworth as the deep threat with Welker being the posession guy and sprinkle in Caldwell, Gaffney and Jackson and its a decent WR crew especially with Brady dishing the ball around.

All in all the offseason has beenpretty good for the Pats, hopefully the lock up Samuel long term, and it will be interesting to see who they pick up in the Draft.

yeah

too bad they didnt offer branch a 6 year deal last spring

this is a gamble

theyres not a lot of guaranteed money here

even money he ends up on the suspended list before the year starts

75/25 he gets the s*** beaten out of him by richard seymour for being a punk
