Id imagine that they may spring some of the cash they would have spent one a 1st rounder for some high-demand guys that slip (ex. Lars Anderson).

One thing that has really bothered me over the past couple years is back in 05' when we drafted Pedro Alvarez in the 14th round. He was committed to going to school but would a massive signing bonus been able to sway him? (even bigger than we offered, it was around 1mil) But the reason I bring this up is because Alvarez is an extremely good player, he's a better prospect than David Price to give you an idea, having a hitting prospect like him would have been insane. Oh well ;)

I think Alvarez is from the Bronx. Me thinks who drafted him may have played a role in his decision to go to school.

Sox getting Lars Anderson in the 18th round is looking like a steal thus far

He wouldve gone in the 1st or 2nd round but teams balked at his salary bonus demands

the luxuries of being a big market team. We did it with Montero, Betances, and Melancon last yr. Might as well pump cash into the draft and then you may save a few bucks later on.

BTW, the Yankees are looking at Andrew Brackman. He's the UNC grad who many considered to be the co-top prospect with David Price. Brackman has battled personal problems (his ex-girlfriend died) and minor shoulder issues as he watched his draft stock has drop.

Baseball America sees him slipping from the 1st round altogether, and ranks this stud as the 30th projected draft pick (Yankees' pick)

30. James Simmons, rhp, UC Riverside (27)

Simmons led UC Riverside to the Big West title, even though he lost his last start against No. 9 UC Irvine. Simmons' fastball has stayed firm all season, regularly hitting 93 mph in his last start, and as usual, he didn't walk a batter in eight innings. He's the college pitcher to draft if you like numbers and command: 10-3, 2.32 with a 113-13 strikeout-walk ratio in 116 innings.

I'd still take Brackman. There was a reason why Brackman was considered the #2 player in the draft coming into this season. Kinda like Kennedy from a yr ago. Another kid who, if he can be put together again, would be a fast mover and absolutely would be worth something. By the way, perusing a few yankee sites, a lot of the prospect sites see the yankees taking Brackman.

does anyone know who Greg Peavey is? He seems to be a highly talked about name as the yankees second round pick. I guess he is committed to Oregon State, so he may have signability issues, but is he a top flight talent?

Pitching Stats

PRESENT FUTURE LOW HIGH COMMENT

Fastball 80 80 91 99 Consistently 94-96 mph.

FB Movement 60 70 N/A N/A Outstanding ride up; heavy bore.

Command 40 50 N/A N/A Average with FB, CB, CH. Needs work.

Control 45 50 N/A N/A

Curveball 60 70 N/A N/A Power CB. Tight. Out-pitch.

Slider 50 50 N/A N/A Knuckle CB, slider-like. Inconsistent.

Changeup 40 50 84 84 Usable. Most thrown too hard and lacked depth.

Splitter N/A N/A N/A N/A

Other Pitch N/A N/A N/A N/A

Feel for Pitching 40 50 N/A N/A Will improve with full attention to pitching.

Physical Description: Very tall, large frame. Average shoulders. Long limbs. Strength from leverage. Similar to Chris Young.

Arm Angle: 7/8

Mechanics: Some drift, gets over front leg but stays on line. Arm angle varies; slight outside path with arm.

Tempo: Quick. Stays in fair balance.

Release time: 1.24

Ultimate Role: No. 1 starter

Draft Estimate: 1st round (high)

Summary: Very tall athletic ex-basketball player with fairly clean arm action and basically sound delivery. Shows now and will have superior FB that can overpower ML hitters. Power CB will be out-pitch to RH and LHH. Needs to scrap second CB; change needs work, but usable off superior FB. Will hold runners and field position. Shouldn't be rushed. Everything will improve with instruction and innings now that he is concentrating full time on baseball. Special arm with ceiling of a No.1 starter; worst case No. 3 starter. Inconsistency will push him down a little.

I like this Brackman kid. More pitching, pitching pitching.

I;ve been reading a little on scout.com and there are rumors that Matt Harvey (out of Fitch HS in CT) may be available late in the first round. Apparently his senior yr didnt go as well as some had hoped. Hell, I'd take him.

Also, too bad Michael Main will be taken in the mid 1st. He's a HS kid who can throw 99mph. Freakish.

I'd love it if the Yanks took Brackman. He is demanding a multi-million dollar deal, and he's destined to be a reliever. He's struggled not only because of personal tragedy but because he's not used to having strain. He is a raw pitcher due to the lack of pitching experience due to his previous basketball commitment. He is injury prone and could not hold the #1 starter spot on NC State!!! Yes he has a good fastball, but so did Dan Bard and we've all seen what happened to him. Yes he's "flashed" a great curveball, but he's never really put it together. Greg Peavey is a pitcher who is represented by Scott Boras and has a solid commitment to Oregon State, so he will fall. His other main detractor is his lack of upside. Scouts think he hasn't improved much since freshman year so it's possible he's done improving. He is also probably destined for the pen. Matt Harvey could fall also for the fact he's represented by Scott Boras, but I believe he wants a major league contract and last I checked the Yankees do not give amateurs major league contracts. Also he's a lifelong Red Sox fan.

MiLB.com has scouting reports on most players and some have videos:

One other site actually said that a guy like Porcello could fall a long way in this draft. Porcello is likely the best HS pitcher, but he is represented by Boras and is asking for 10 mil to sign.

Now, your info is partially right philly. I dont think the yankees will offer a MLB contract to a kid, that would be stupid. But they certainly could offer a huge signing bonus. And if a guy of Porcello's or Harvey's caliber slipped to them at #30, they'd be stupid to pass. I have a feeling you wont get a shot at either of them from where you are standing.

A big surprise is brewing in the draft. It appears the DRays are going to take Catcher Matt Wieters with the 1st overall pick tomorrow. This is from one of the writers at pinstripesplus.com. He says he has 2 extremely reliable sources.

Yea how could the Yankees be that stupid to sign a kid to a MLB contract? Its not like its been done before

well, you saw what happened the last time they did it. You are still rueing the day.

I wonder where the Yankees are gonna go in this draft. If you remember in 2005 they could have had Craig Hansen and they didnt want to give him a ML contract so they picked CJ Henry. Last year they spent way over the slotting price to get guys like Chamberlain and Dellin Bentencs.

It's a deep draft, so the tough signs might slip farther that usual. The Sox and Yanks will make their hay after the 6th round, IMO.

Harvey and Smoker are the only other 2 I'd want out of the 1st round pitchers.

I thought you were hoping to get that Andrew Brackmann kid?

edit, roto hits it right on

Tigers selected high school RHP Rick Porcello with the 27th pick in the 2007 draft.

And Yankees fans are left disappointed again. Porcello would have been the No. 2 pick in the draft behind Price had cost been irrelevant, but he wants a major league deal and perhaps the largest bonus in the draft. Considered by some to be the top high school pitcher since Josh Beckett, he throws in the mid-90s and has an excellent curveball. If the Tigers can't sign him, he'll go to North Carolina in the fall.
