While the draft isn't going to be held until June isn't never to early to talk about it. The 2007 draft maybe its best in years going in into the Spring, specially in the High School class while the college one not as strong as the High School is also a strong one. i will be posting from time to time about it, with today posting the toppossible 10 players going in to the Spring.

The top 10 players for the 2007 draft are;

1- David Price LHP Vanderbilt University

2- Andrew Brackman RHP North Carolina State

3- Matt Wietters RHP/C Georgia Tech

4- Matt Harvey RHP Fitch H.S./Connecticut

think the Sox go for a batter or a pitcher in the first round ?

It's called take the best player available regardless of position. In the baseball draft you don't draft for need. You draft for talent.

Catching specially at the college level is again the weakest position for the 2007 draft. Tennessee's university JP Arencibia could be drafted in the middle of the first round, but mainly because of his plus power, defense wise he has a good arm, but his catching its average. There is a big drop off between Arrencibia and the second college ranked catcher as it could be Auburn's university Josh Donaldson or Oregon's state U Mitch Canhan. Donaldson has done very little catching being mainly a third baseman, neither is a first round candidate.

In the High School front Miamian school boys Danny Rams (Gulliver prep) and Yasmany Grandal (Miami Springs H.S.) or Texan Cameron Rupp (Prestonwood H.S./Plano) are the top catchers, but again at this time they aren't going to be drafted in the first round.

In pure talent those nine LHP should go in the first round, but there is 6 and half month away and the baseball season hasn't even begin, so a lot of things can happen, but for now that its how I see it.

For the last few last years top college middle infielders has been very hard, but so has been depth at the positions, for the 2007 draft while its has a better depth it lacks a top prospect. The top 10 college middle infielders in the order that they should be drafted is.

Josh Horton North Carolina university*

Zack Cozart Mississippi University#

Darwin Barney Oregon State @

Brian Friday Rice University

Andrew Romine Arizona State

Ryan Wehrle Nebraska University

Damon Sublett Wichita State @

Taylor Harbin Clemson University ^

Dominic De La Osa Vandervilt University

Erric Farris Loyola Marymount University @

* Is mainly a offensive short stop.

# Is perhaps the most pure SS in college

@ Projects as a second base man as a pro

^ Has played second base in college

In my opinon the sleeper as a college middle infielder is Brandon Douglas from Northern Iowa. Douglas is a draftable college sophomore.

The Sox recently hired a new scout for Puerto Rico, Edgar Perez and the top Puerto Rican prospect going into the Spring for the 07 June's draft is OF Angel Morales.
Posted
Scaff, is there any chance that Puerto Rico will again produce a large number of major league prospects? Are the best players moving to the U.S.? Why has the drop off in talent been so great?
Posted
AZBlue; Baseball in Puerto Rico isn't what it was perhaps in 20-30 years ago, the Puerto Rican youth isn't any more as baseball crazy as it was back them, but mainly because of the Puerto Rico baseball academy it has been producing and getting drafted a decent number of players the last few years, just not as many as before and many of them aren't ready for pro ball that why you would see a lot of them going to JC and universities in the States.

With the signing of Julio lugo signing the sox loose their first round pick ( Pick #20) but because of the signing of Alex Gonzalez and when Keith Foulke signs the Sox will getl a sandwitch pick for each, which means the Sox will have two pick between the 40-50 pick.
Posted
isnt there a deadline where if Foulke is not signed by a certain time' date=' that pick flie away?[/quote']

No, if the Red Sox didn't offer him arbitration then the team could sign him without losing a pick.

With the signing of Keith Foulke with the Guardians now officially it means that the Red Sox will have two sandwich picks for loosing Alex Gonzalez and now Foulke. The Sox's picks would be early fortys and late fiftys.

With the start of the college baseball season its time to get back in this thread and if my time will allow I will be posting updates.

One of the hottest names coming into this college season is Fresno state outfielder Ozzie lewis. lewis is a 6-5 210 21 yrs R/R who potentially has 5 tools, all of his tools are above average and it may not surprise to many that he be an early first round pick.

Posted
In terms of the Sox, I would like to see them go after some SS prospects if possible with their picks. I know that you don't draft looking for a certain position but there seems to be a real need for SS prospects within the org since Hanley was traded.
Posted
Like i posted before middle infielders except high schoolers aren't the strength of this draft and this its a very good draft going into the baseball season. At this point Price is the #1 pick of this draft.
Posted
Who was the pitcher who had eight walks' date=' but 30 HBP? He's supposedly a good prospect, due to his high strikeout rate, a bit of a temper though.[/quote']

CS-Fullerton pitcher Wes Roemer.

While the High school baseball season hasn't started, two prospects that has been the talk of the scouting community they are Texa's LHP Jack McGeary and Puerto Rican OF Angel Morales, neither where considered first round picks after last school year, but it may be another matter this coming June. Mc Geary has shown this past fall a fast ball in the 94 range and Morales a potential for five tools.
