ESPN has reported from the NY Daily News that the Yankees are set to fire Joe Torre and replace him with Lou Piniella. This has not been on ESPN.com or NYDailynews.com but was reported on sportscenter.

If I were them' date=' I'd fire Cashman instead.[/quote']

What did Cashman do?

Torre is the one to be blamed for this series, without a doubt. I've never seen a manager let a team lose momentum so quickly. Don Mattingly might even become a target for the pathetic offense we saw these last couple days.

Not sure why they'd wanna fire him, seeing as how they've won a bazillion division titles and World Series' with him. 881 wins and 64 playoff wins is pretty damn good since he became coach in '96. He's won them 4 World Series' since '96 with only 3 losses in those 4 series'. IMO it is a mistake to fire Torre. They won the division, they made the playoffs, Steinbrenner needs to understand that they won't win every year, and until him and Cashman decide to bring in some actually good pitching they probably won't win under any manager, and probably will do worse than they would with Torre. He's getting the raw end of the stick.

I do not see the logic at all that Lou Pinella is suddenly going to make this team win a World Series. He never even won a fricking division in New York!! I think we all know George Steinbrenner overreacts to everything, but if he does this, I think it will send New York into a down period. I mean like a someone else will win the East for at least 5 years down period. Joe Torre is as good as you are going to get to manage the New York Yankees. Nobody has experience with that type of clubhouse except him. I actually think that George's infatuation with bringing in every star player he can is the problem in New York. There are no Paul O'Neills no Tinos, no David Cones, no Scott Brosius and so on.

Joe Torre is not the problem, Steinbrenner and the FO have disrespected his method for winning and given him players that he cannot make win together. They are not the Yankees I can respect, because Torre was the reason for the respect, and now he cannot make his players into that classy unit that won numerous World Series. Torre is not the person who needs to change.

I hope george stays alive for a long time so he can make more mistakes like firing torre .The more hes involved the better it is for the redsox .

Yeah, it did wonders for you guys this year.

I don't understand how anyone could classify firing a manager who has failed, consistently, over the last half a decade in October as a mistake. If we're going to credit Torre for '96, '98, '99, and '00...then he needs to be held accountable for '02, '03, '04, '05, and '06.

most teams do not consider what Torre did failure. Actually, I think only the Yankees do. There is nobody in the world with an ego big enough to control that team's motivations

As I recall, Cashman was given autonomy this year and George had little to do with the personnel decisions made.

If you are going to be a nasty beeyotch, at least be right.

Torre's management of the 2003 world series and the 2004 ALCS led directly to them losing those series. The 2004 ALCS might have been the worst managed playoff series I have ever seen. In 2005 it took miracle proformences from Small and Chacon to make the playoffs in 2005 so you can make the case they should not have made the playoffs last year and if they didnt make the playoffs last year he would have definitely been fired. Now 2006 speaks for itself. Yesterday was a disgraceful proformence. They were not ready to play yesterday and the Tigers flat out kicked their ass. I didnt even talk about how Torre murders the pen. Ughhhhh Goodbye Torre.

Torre is to blame here. It was a huge mistake to bat AROD sixth in the first game. It completly took his head out of the game, its not good to take away what ever confidence A-rod had left. It will be wierd to not see Torre in the yankees dugout next season.

100% agreed. A-Rod had a great Sept why is he moved down the lineup for Sheffield who is still coming back form the injury?

because he sucks in the playoffs!!! Have you been under a rock?

Check out Sheffields #'s in the playoffs. Atleast Prior to 04 A-Rod did hit somewhat in the playoffs. Sheffield has never hit in the playoffs and he was still coming back from an injury. You might need to get out from under the rock.

This team has soo much ego maybe they should hire Phil Jackson. Lou Pinelelala? He will go bat s*** crazy with theese guys before June.. I say bring it on... *crawls back under rock*

Torre had a great run run in NY. It was time to change the face in the dugout. This Yankee team didn't need a calming influence in the dugout like the self-motivated teams that won championships. This team needed a kick in the ass, a jump start. Torre can't do that. Frankly, it was time for him to go last year. He didn't want to work for George anymore and George wanted him gone, but there was too much money left on his contract for either one to make a move.

agreed in full. Good post.

Looking at this as a Sox fan, firing Torre, would take away one clear advantage NY has over the Sox. From what I read, this also may divide the NY clubhouse more since Jeter is a Torre supporter. Seems like a return to the Bronx Zoo days.

I just don't see that. Yes Torre brings stability to the clubhouse, but he is no better a game manager than Tito. In fact Tito managed the pants off Joe in the 2004 ALCS.

agreed, and when you use the terms "Tito managed the pants off of him", you know the manager is terrible. Joe is good in the clubhouse but horrible on the field.

While I am extremely disappointed with Torre, I am pretty upset with his likely departure. It'll be tough.

I'm looking forward to seeing some reaction. I want to see Torre get picked up by another team and see if anyYankees request a trade to that team.

With Lou more than likely taking over, don't expect Randy or A-Rod to be moved this winter. Maybe Lou can get the best out of them, who knows. We'll see.

I wonder what changes are gonna be made to the coaching staff. Mattingly has been one of the games best hitting coaches the past few years and I would expect him to stay. But he, along with maybe Bowa (who was the 3rd base coach under Lou in Seattle at one point) are the only people who more than likely remain.

..while I agree that Torre hasn't been a very good playoff manager in recent years (2003 throwing Jeff Weaver in the 11th inning of game 4, not bunting on Schill in Game 6 in '04, etc.), he did a great job this season, and we all know his capabilities. It's gonna be interesting to see how this unfolds. I, personally, would prefer Mattingly or Girardi to take over, but appearantly it's gonna be Lou.

I wouldn't say he's "horrible on the field." Horrible managers dont win 4 championships in 5 years. They dont win 10 Division titles in 11 years, and they don't win 6 penants in 11 years. Granted, he isn't Tommy LaSorda orJoe McCarthy, but he'll still most likely be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a manager.

for 20 years torre was a sub 500 manager

they bring him to ny,surround him with good pitching and some talented ball players and guess what

he won

they didnt lose this series cause of torre

they lost because they didnt score runs in 20 straight innings and theyre pitching is old

blame cashman for going to battle with 2 40sumthins in moose and rj

then needing jarrett wright in to save the season

blame cashman for not getting any pitchign this offseason outside farnsworth who has been on as many teams as carl everett

blame steinbrenner for givin up soriano for arod so we didnt get him

blame the stud lineup that had a .342 hitter batting 9th who couldnt hit kenny rogers

lots of blame

Why would u fire Joe Torre when he's given your team 9 straight Division titles and taken the team to a World Series championship multiple times. I think if the Yankees fire Torre it will be the biggest mistake the Yankees can make and I don't see how Lou Pinella will do any better than Torre then again we have heard this how many times that Torre was gone and he's still around.
