Craig Breslow gets called up

Announced on WEEI that Craig Breslow has been called up to take Johnson’s spot on the 25 man roster. Included with the announcement that this will be only until Monday when Snyder will more than likely get the call.

If the lack of a nameplate on his locker is any indication, reliever Craig Breslow shouldn't get too comfortable in the Sox clubhouse. Although no official move has been announced, the Sox called up the lefthanded reliever from Pawtucket today. In a corresponding roster move Lenny DiNardo was placed on the 60-day disabled list to make room for Breslow on the 40-man roster.

 

Don't read too much into either move. DiNardo, who has been sidelined with a neck strain, is going to make a rehabilitation start for Triple A Pawtucket tomorrow against the Charlotte Knights. He will throw 40 to 45 pitches, according to manager Terry Francona.

 

Breslow is likely just a place holder until the Sox need a fifth starter, which won't be until Monday against Kansas City. Kyle Snyder is likely to get the call against his former team.

 

When asked how Breslow, who was 5-1 with a 3.40 ERA in 26 appearances for Pawtucket, would be used, Francona said: "I don't know if he will be used. He won't be a lefty-lefty [matchup guy] before [Javier] Lopez. We'll see. The games will dictate how he is used."

-- Don't count out David Wells just yet. Wells, who hasn't pitched since May 26, could throw a side session as soon as this week, according to Francona. "I think we're close enough where we can start thinking about a side day, depending on how his knee reacts, maybe within the week," said Francona.

 

-- Other injury updates: Matt Clement was scheduled to go out and throw at 60 feet today. Keith Foulke is still feeling some pain in his elbow. Wily Mo Pena will probably play through the weekend with Triple A Pawtucket before returning to Boston.

 

"At bats are kind of at a premium. ...I know he's starting to get antsy down there," said Francona of Pena. "But 10, 12, 15 more at-bats will do him good, better than sitting here."

 

At that point the Sox will have to make a decision because they will have a glut of outfielders -- there are five on the roster now -- and Francona said the team was not planning on using Pena at first base. That could mean that Willie Harris's days in a Boston uniform could be numbered. Harris has had just 10 at-bats since the start of June.

 

-- Pitching coach Dave Wallace, who had hip replacement surgery in February, is scheduled to make his first appearance in uniform tonight. "It's a big step for him," said Francona.

 

Wally is back
