Manny's Agent: Manny wants to stay.....for good.

Per WEEI today, Manny Ramirez's agent said that Manny will not ask for a trade this season, and instead is looking for an extension instead.

I think there is more to this than meets the eye.

First of all, Pedro is in town, and Pedro is buddies with Manny. Im thinking Pedro had a talk with Manny and told him to stay in Boston, because Pedro himself misses Boston very much. Pedro still says it today that he never wanted to leave. Im thinking that Pedro told Manny that the grass is not always greener on the other side and that the fans in Boston are like no other.

Players love to play here.

Millar wanted to stay, Pedro wanted to stay, Embree was sour when he left, Mo Vaughn was upset to leave, Eckersley has said its the best, Nomar was stunned to leave, Damon has hinted that he misses it, Wakefield signed his life over to Boston for a marginal deal, Ocab wanted to stay and nobody can forget Clemens, who was furious for years....but in the end he still has Boston in his heart.

Maybe Pedro talked some sense into Manny to wake him up and realize that he is loved here in Boston, and he will never be received the way he is in Fenway, and that two nights ago was the hardest moment in the career of Pedro Martinez, taking a standing ovation with a video montage playing.....while wearing a visiting uniform.

I don’t see the Sox extending his contract right now. He’s signed through 2008 with 2009-10 club options for about $20M per year. Not to mention that his contract is back-ended with about $30M due by the end of 2026. Given the way the Sox FO likes to have players play out their contract, I’d be really surprised to see any action until November 2008.

Any extension manny signed would be:

a) reasonable, because the Sox brass won't offer anything but something reasonable; and B) a guarantee that Manny would FINALLY be traded.

Hope fully if Manny does sign an extension, it would be for a slight discount on his current contract... I would love to see Manny retire a sox, and go into the hall as a Red Sox.

Manny could veto any trade due to his 10/5 status. “Something reasonable” at this point would be accepting a hometown discount which seems unlikely unless Manny REALLY wants to stay in Boston.

Last year he wanted to be traded. This year he wants to stay. (Kind of reminds me of the Clash song “Should I Stay Or Should I Go”.) I hope this isn’t just lip service and he truly wants to stay, because I’d really like to see him finish his career in Boston.

I agree with the fact that signing Manny to an extension anytime before his current contract expires won't happen.

If he and the Sox want each other at that point, maybe they could restructure some of the deferred dollars into a current contract, thereby meaning more annual dollars in the next contract in exchange for fewer defferred dollars.
