Last night on the pregame with Joe and Jerry, Tito mentioned how DiNardo would be out in the pen in case he was needed to come in . ( Read if Clement got lit up early). The plan was if he had to call Lenny in, a roster move would be made for todays start.

Sounded good. I guess. Anyhoo. the next question from Trupe was about how managing a pitching staff is really the most taxing part of being a manager in the bigs, Tito agreed.

So cue that glorious game footage..

Tito lets Clement go... for a very average start then he brings in Timlin and Papplebon, with the Sox down. Now if Lenny getss lit up today or by a miracle of God the Sox score some runs to give them a slim lead whats the game plan for the pen, Tito?

This could be a vicious cycle, this pen may just be burnt toast by the end of May.

And then will we still get a roster move Tito?

Thoughts?

I harped on this in my run differential post. So far, Papelbon is on pace to throw over 80 innings as a closer. Timlin was relatively unused thus far, but Foulke is on pace for well over 100IP. If your starters cannot hold teams scoreless, then your pen will falter. Your O needs to give your pitchers some leeway...

I agree , I just dont see the point in Timlin , Papplebon when you are down . Schill wasnt available?

Why not "Foulkie"?

I guess thats what infuriates me the most about Tito; Sometimes he plays to win tommorow, sometimes he loses to win tommorow. Either way hes got an excuse.

Soon enough his excuse will be " My pen is tired".

You know you are gonna need the pen today with Squiggy going . And if the lightning strikes and you actually score runs and have a lead.. then what?

Foulke had pitched the day before, and had worked several times this week. Papelbon hadn't worked since Tuesday. He needed the work.

well its not like last night was a blowout, I was alright with him trotting out his best reliief pitchers to give the struggling offense a chance to come back. Also like A700 said, Papelbon hadnt worked since Tuesday, he needs to get his innings in.

Im well aware of their recent outings. Im just saying if they go 12 today and 10 on sunday what was the point of getting your best relievers work when you are behind?

this is just the beginning though, and I understand all points. BUT, if you want to see what using your bp aces in losing efforts gets you, go back and watch your faith rewarded videos and view the yankee pen from 04. They got burned out in similar fashion...

Its a sad state of affairs when your pen is useed to keep the game close, just in case they make a comeback ( See yesterday).

I have some serious concerns about this team. I have never been a big fan of Tek and Trot, I think they are both overated on both sides of the ball. So if this team is going to run on the fuel of Manny and Tiz at the plate we are doomed.

What if either one of them ever got hurt this year?

I think Tek is playing hurt right now. Hopefully, this injury he has will not linger too long. He is a streaky hitter, and he is yet to get hot when he does, he'll take some pressure off Manny and Ortiz.
