Astros reach tentative agreement with Wilson

The Astros have reached a preliminary agreement with free agent outfielder Preston Wilson on a one-year deal, pending a physical.

Wilson was on a flight to Houston this afternoon to undergo his physical, and a news conference could be called to introduce the veteran slugger later today once Wilson undergoes and passes his physical.

"There's still some details to work out," Astros general manager Tim Purpura said.

Purpura withheld further comment until the deal was complete. Wilson's agent, Robert Bry of St. Louis, said he hoped to be able to make an official comment by 5 p.m. today.

Wilson, 31, would give the Astros a solid middle-of-the-order run producer who can help protect Lance Berkman and Morgan Ensberg in the lineup. He has played center field most of his career.

Last year with the Colorado Rockies and Washington Nationals, Wilson hit .260 with 25 home runs, 90 RBIs and 148 strikeouts.

first move of the offseason for the Astros. He'll play left and Berkman will move 1st.

rotoworld is saying the contract is for one-year, $4 million with a three-year club option.

Good signing for the Astros. Wilson has some power in his bat and can play some great D. He might make some noise for the Astros.

Wilson doesn't play great D anymore, but its a good signing none the less. Hes gotten old and is slower getting to balls and for some of this season looked lost in center. He will still produce runs more than anyone else will in their lineup and hopefully this year if they have a pitcher with a 1.8something ERA he will win some games.

If they play him in left, with that short fence and less field to cover than he had to cover in center at RFK and Coors he won't look as slow.

I agree as well, nice signing for ths 'Stros.
