Packers' Sherman loses job after first losing season

By Len Pasquarelli

ESPN.com

Just one day after completing the franchise's worst season since 1991, the Green Bay Packers on Monday dismissed head coach Mike Sherman, ESPN.com has confirmed. The move, which will be announced at a morning news conference, came despite the fact the Packers awarded Sherman a two-year contract extension worth about $6.4 million last summer. It also fuels speculation about the future of quarterback Brett Favre, who said several times during the season that he would not return in 2006 if Sherman was not retained by Packers officials.

Green Bay concluded the '05 season with a victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in a game that might have been Favre's swan song. There was also speculation it might have been the finale for Sherman as well, and general manager Ted Thompson apprised the head coach Monday morning that he would not return. The Packers were decimated by injuries in 2005 and left the club, especially on offense, performing with players that former Green Bay general manager Ron Wolf compared to NFL Europe League players. Green Bay's 4-12 record matches the mark that the club had in 1991, and the tumble is made all the more dramatic by the fact the Packers had won the division crown in each of the past three seasons.

Sherman, 51, succeeded Ray Rhodes as head coach in 2000. In his six seasons with the club, he compiled a 59-43 mark. Green Bay went to the playoffs four times under Sherman, once as a wild-card entry and three times as division champions, but never advanced beyond the divisional round.

List is compiling

Sherman- Packers

Martz- Rams

Mariucci- Lions

Capers- Texans

Tice- Vikings

EDIT: Retiring, Dick Vermeil- Cheifs

Soon to be Norv Turner of the Raiders? Could Herm Edwards leave New York to take over the Chiefs?

Doesn't count as being fired, but it's a head coaching vacancy none-the-less...

Dick Vermel announced he would retire.

Gonna have quite the coaching carousel this offseason.

Another one to add, Jim Haslett has resigned as coach of the Saints.

Ugh... this only means one thing, to me.. Gary Kubiak probably won't be the Broncos Offensive Coordinator. Some team will be very luck to have him!

Coaching is like the Mafia. It's one big familia. The only way "in" is to know someone. The only way "out" is to get the bullet (be fired). And God help you if you betray anyone in the familia.

Herman Edwards out as Jets Coach

ROTOWORLD---WFAN in New York is reporting that Herm Edwards is out as Jets coach. It could become official as early as tonight. The Chiefs and Jets are currently negotiating draft picks as compensation.

According to WFAN's Mike Francesa, Jets owner Woody Johnson is tired of Edwards asking for a contract extension. The team also reportedly isn't happy about some recent leaks to the media. Rumors say that Johnson will let his coach go for a third and fifth round draft pick. That said, it's not good news for a Jets franchise that is already having roster and morale problems. Defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson and offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger are both likely candidates to replace Herm. Jan. 4 - 5:23 pm et

Herm Edwards' ascension to head coach of the Chiefs is positive news for the value of Larry Johnson moving forward.

Losing Dick Vermeil isn't positive news for any offensive player. But Edwards is a fine replacement, at least for Kansas City's running game. He comes from the Marty Schottenheimer/Bill Cowher tree of offensive line play and pounding the football. Trent Green and Eddie Kennison might not be so lucky. Jan. 4 - 5:33 pm et

I think hes the best available coach available now. Good fit for KC after losing Vermeil. I think Mike Sherman and Haslett are the next best options for coaching replacements. I think Tice should go to a college to coach. Capers, Martz and Norv Turner should only be assistant coaches in the NFL. I could see Martz or Turner going to San Diego or somewhere else to become am O coordinator.

WHAT IF THEY GOT SUPERSTAR HALL OF FAMER REGGIE BUSH!?!??!?!!?!?!?

(being sarcastic at the fact that everyone is getting hard over him when he has yet to play a pro game)

Please, even if they kept him the Jets are lightyears away from scaring me.

If the Jets didn't have a single player injured this season, they'd give your Patriots a run the their money, most definatley. Not only did we lose out 1st, and 2nd QBs within minuets of each other, we also lost our RB, who played injured for 12weeks, but our backup runningback in week two. We lost our Center, and our DB. We lost our TE, who was one of the only plus' on the team. We lost our #3 Wide reciever, who has like a 99% receptions percentage on 3rd down. Not 1 single player who started at O-Line week 1 started week 17. We then went out and got a s***** old QB. And he got injured, so we brought in the 3rd year #3 guy....who, got injured. Kliff Kingsburry....ever herd of him??I thought so. Thank got Brooks wasn't hurt to bad, or we'd have gone 2-14, but have the risk of more injurys....Now where was I. Oh, thats right, then our LB Erik Barton had to sit out a few games because of a hurt leg, But that was after David Barret had to miss a few games because he scratched his eye. One of our most highlighted rookie picks broke his leg in the offseason. Ty Law...injured.....Dwayne Robertson...injured...Shawn Ellis...injured...BJ Askew...injured......plus all the other I cannot remember. So theres like 18 players that missed games or time due to injuries. So ther Jets are lightyears away from contesting the Patriots?? The Patriots, who had their worst season in the 3 in 4 years since 2002...when the Jets..Jets won the division? I know you hate the Jets, I understand that, I hate the Patriots, but thats no reason to start putting the Jets at the bottem of a hole, when, come next season, all those players I mentioned will be better and back...and, my god, they might not make the playoffs, but they will be a team to fear...mark my words on it.

Just like all the Jets fans were talkin s*** after their 5-0 start last year right? When, oh yeah, they were dealt their first loss of the season from who else? The Pats.

It's not like the Pats were completely healthy this season either. Rodney Harrison going down wasn't cool and was basically the last thing that we needed as the rest of our secondary went down too...Randall Gay, Tyrone Poole, Asante Samuel, EVEN DUANE STARKS GOT INJURED. Matt Light, quite possibly our best lineman, went down as well. Kevin Faulk...battling injury, Corey Dillon...battling injury. Patrick Pass? Injured. David Givens? Injured. How about arguably our BEST TE as well? Daniel Graham? Injured. Tedy Bruschi? Coming back from a stroke. Seymour? Out for awhile. Gorin? Injured. Willie McGinest? Was injured. You wanna play the injury game? I'll play it. Face it, the Pats are a deeper team, and a better team than the Jets are.

Sure, the Jets had their share of injuries, but when using that as an excuse to say that you will come back and scare the Pats is ludicrous. Especially when the Pats, who battled JUST AS MANY, if not MORE, injuries. The Pats don't let injuries stand in their way of winning the division, nor use it as an excuse to go 4-12.

Yeah, the Dolphins are better than the Jets, and our second and third string players nearly beat them. Please, no offense to you, but dont put the Pats and Jets in the same sentence as one another until the Jets get on our level.

Also, don't even compare the 2002 Jets and the 2002 Pats to the 2006 versions of each team. The Pats brought in Corey Dillon, Rodney Harrison, drafted Ben Watson, brought in Daniel Graham, and drafted Logan Mankins all in that time frame.

First of all...I didn't

Second of all, Why would I...the 2006 Jets sucked, the 2002 were good, the 2006 Pats were good, the 2002 Pats were good too. I'm not saying that The Jets will win the superbowl next year, and I also never said anything once the Jets started 5-0, so if a stupid Jets fan who lives down the street says something, not all the fans think it(not saying thats what happened...). But the next time the Jets contest the Patriots is gunna be like 2015??

In 2003, Chad Pennington got injured, and the Jets went 6-10, the Jets came right back the next year, and made the playoffs at 10-6. So, this year, when the Jets lose Chad Pennington, his backup, plus over 10 other guys, they have no shot at all of pulling anything off once all those guys come back?? If we had Jay Feidler this year, we woulda had 6 wins easy. Bills, Chargers, Falcons, Panthers, Broncos.....those are all games we coulda won, but Vinny and Brooks lost due to extreamly poor play, you throw a former NFL starter in there, and you got a W in half of those. SO you throw all our starters back...plus whoever the number 4 overall pick will get us, and we got a shot to make some noise.

And, if I can't compair the 2002 Pats and Jets or whatever it was, you cannot compair our teams injuries, becuase you take out Brady and Flutie..and we will have seen the dolphins win the East this year..Becuase, unlinke other non-Pats ans, I can admit that Brady is one of the best QBs, and best stories in the NFLs history, and hes got the coach to go with it, so you take those two/three out, and you'll be seeing football from my perspective. So untill then, don't think becuase your RB was 'probable' in weel 13 or whatever it was, that becuase you still won the division, the Pats aren't fased by it. The Jets lost that what a team NEEDS to win, and when the get that back, wins what they'll do.........

This isn;t supposed to be a fight either, becuase I don't want to get into one on this topic, becuase I'm kinda pissed right now about the Jets, but don't think its fair to count them out for years to come like it is for the Texans, Saints, 9ers...teams like that who were almost at full health most of the year, and still couldn;t do anything.

No, I said 2006 as in next year's teams because that's who you said would make a run at it. I wasn't talking about this year...the season that was just completed (with exception to the postseason) was 2005. Just clarifying.

And yes, I can compare the injuries. And yes, you can't compare the two teams. They are two totally different teams now than they were back in 2002. Like I said, they added so many more players who have made an impact in today than the Jets have.

I can compare the injuries because that's what happened this year. No if's and's or but's about it. Are you saying that if you had Chad Pennington the Pats would be scared of you? Of course, if we lost Tom Brady, we're f***ed. BUT, if you had Pennington, that does not make you better than the Pats. Brady > Pennington. That's a disgrace to Brady actually, you can't even put Pennington and Brady in the same sentence, nor comparison. Honestly, I haven't seen much out of Pennington. He's always been hurt after that display of skill he showed a few years back.

But by saying that our runningback was "probable" means s***. Even if he doesn't play, you're still proving my point that the Pats are a deeper and more talented team than the Jets.

Ever hear the phrase "Defense wins championships?" It's very true. Our secondary has been eaten up ALL YEAR. And what do you mean we weren't phased by it? Give us a healthy team all around and we're just as good as the Colts.

Oh yeah, definitely not, just an exchange of opinions in a debate. It's normal to think like this, lol.

Thats exactly what I was saying.....Brady is better than Pennington,...every1 knows it, but I'm saying..if you take out Brady, Flutie, whoever ur 1st 2 RBs and best TE are(and C) and the Jets were in full heath at those...would the Jets be better. The Pats are stronger at most of those positions anyway in full health, but the strength equality would be disrupted if those who weren't in weren't healthy enough to play strong.

Wow....that last sentence made no seance......:D

Ohh, gotcha. I guess I thought you were arguing something differently. So basically, we were arguing over the same thing...so what were we arguing about? Lol.
