Im a little surprised about bradford being cut by the Sox, wasnt a reason behind Mike Myers not being resigned as "we already have a specialist in bradford"?

Sox tender contracts to three pitchers

Arroyo, Beckett, Mota offered deals; Bradford, Miller denied

By Mike Petraglia / Special to MLB.com

BOSTON -- The Red Sox gave another strong indication Tuesday about how they will go about structuring their 2006 pitching staff. All five arbitration-eligible players are pitchers and the Red Sox tendered contracts to three of them. Starters Bronson Arroyo and Josh Beckett along with reliever Guillermo Mota were all tendered. As a result, if the three hurlers choose to do so, they can take their case to an arbitrator early next year or settle with the team, including the possibility of a long-term contract. The Red Sox could be exploring long-term deals since all three could enter free agency after the 2006 season.

Arroyo was 14-10 with a 4.51 ERA in 32 starts and three relief appearances for Boston last season. Beckett, the 2003 World Series MVP, was 15-8 last season with a 3.38 ERA in 29 starts for the Marlins. The hard-throwing Mota posted a 2-2 mark with two saves and a 4.70 ERA in 56 games for Florida last season. With the acquisition of Beckett and the potential development of Jonathan Papelbon as a starter, Wade Miller was deemed expendable and was non-tendered. Miller had right labrum surgery in September. Also non-tendered was reliever Chad Bradford, who was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 31 appearances for the Red Sox in 2005. Both Miller and Bradford effectively become free agents.

Wasn't the deadline midnight yesterday fortender and acceptance ?

I believe that was for accepting or declining arbitration with players who are free agents. This is different but I'm not sure what the qualifications for this is. I think it may be players who are not eligible for free agency but are arbitration-eligible.

I'm pretty sure last night was the deadline, but I definately vould br wrong. I've been reading nothing but tax code the last few weeks.

No there was definitely some sort of deadline last night. But I think tendering contracts is something completely different because these players aren't automatcally free agents when they're contract expires.

Letting Bradford go isn't too shocking to me. Foulke (when healthy), Timlin, Mota, and Saenz are all better. DiNardo is the only lefty option. And, once Wells is traded, either Arroyo or Papelbon will have to be in the BP. That's 6 arms in the 'pen, plus 5 starters, making an 11 man pitching staff. They already have a few young options that they will want to bring up if anyone is either injured or not performing (Hansen, MDC, Meredith?, Alvarez?). There just isn't enough roster space to justify carrying an OOGY with the arms already there.

once they got mota and the seanez deal became official you knew bradford was expendable considering the sox also want to give young guys like delcarmen and hansen a chance.

delcarmen and hansen were already set to have a chance in the bullpen in 06, even if Sox kept Bradford on board. I agree with recent reports saying they will start the season off in Triple A.

Even if Wells were to stay, arroyo or papelbon would still be shifted to the bullpen anyway. So thats not much of a shocker right there.

from what i have heard seanez gets a base salary that guarantees him $2.1 million and could be worth up to $5.3 million over two years if he pitches regularly as a setup man.

Seanez has a $1.9 million base salary next year, and the Red Sox have a 2007 option at $2.1 million plus whatever performance bonuses he earns in 2006. If the option is declined, Seanez would get a $200,000 buyout.

In 2006 only, Seanez would get $25,000 each for 10 and 15 games, $50,000 each for 25, 30 and 35 games and $100,000 for 40 games and each additional five games through 60.

If he becomes Boston's closer and has 30 games finished next year, the option becomes a player option. He also can earn $500,000 annually based on games finished.

Yeah, I did pull a Captain Obvious there. My point was less about how a Wells trade will affect the staff, and more about how Bradford isn't good enough to take one of the 11 spots away from the people currently filling them. I should have just omitted the Wells reference.
