Here we go again with a new second basemen. This is obviously a great deal for the Sox. Time now to find a catcher for Wake.

I think with a spring to pracitce with Wake, Tek will be just fine.

This trade is a pretty good deal to me, almost a jip in our favor, though Mirrabelli is the best backup catcher in the Majors. I wish him well, he was one of those Nixon dirt dog type players that I love. One thing that should help him is that he'll be facing significantly weaker pitching in the NL West compared to the AL East, but good luck Belli, we'll miss ya.

ERA: AL east

yankees: 4.52

blue jays: 4.06

balty: 4.56

rays: 5.39

ERA: NL west

arizona: 4.84

dodgers: 4.38

rockies: 5.13

giants: 4.33

considering the rocky pitchers play half their games at coors a 5.13 era isn't all THAT bad. even with that it seems like mirabelli will be going up against the same kind of competition.. don't just assume that he's going to weaker pitching because it's the NL. both the NL west and the AL east were below league average last year.

I love this trade for a couple of reasons. First, the points made about trading a back-up C for an above average starting 2B are spot on, this is a bit of a steal. Second, I think this means that Shoppach most likely won't be traded. This is good because I think he was seriously being undervalued in other trade rumors. He's got good defensive skills and serious pop in his bat. Because of Tek, it may not seem like a big deal to keep him now, but it will in 3 years when the Capn's contract is up. Lastly, this puts another middle IF on the roster, letting Tony G go. I like Tony G, but in the long run, by replacing him with equivalent level talent via trade, letting him walk will grant us 2 more early round draft picks.

Rumors are Shoppach will still be used in a deal.

Another rumor is that Tony G may be brought back to play/platoon at SS if Rents is traded.

Shopp could still be dealt, but I'll be surprised if isn't for more impactful player than previous rumors had him going for.

I'll be completely shocked if Tony G is back. With Loretta, Cora, Lowell, Youk, and Marte they already have 5 players for the two positions that he plays most regularly (2B and 3B ). I'd look for Rent's replacement to come via FA or trade. Most likely the former now that the arbitration deadline has passed and either Alex Gonzalez or Royce Clayton can be picked up without forking over draft picks.

Id take Tony G/Cora platoon any day than take on Julio Lugo. He shouldnt even be in their plans.

Id like the Tampa Bay trade if it has the Sox asking for just Huff and Baez

cora has a career obp of .310 and a .970 f% at short

graff has a career obp of .336 and a .962 f% at short

lugo has a career obp of .340 (.362 last year!!) and a .971 f% at short.

lugo created 89 runs last year in 690 PA ave of .129 per PA

graff created 58 runs last year in 414 PA ave of .140

cora created 23 runs last year in 203 PA ave of .113

as a sox lugo will be less likely to be given the go signal, he should be able to create less outs and generate more runs just based on the factor that he gets on base more often than the other two. i'm not saying i'm a huge lugo fan, i just think he's a better option than graff/cora (i'm not a big fan of platooning). as of how to attain lugo, i have yet to contemplate that.

he's better than both graff and cora, just entered his prime not long ago and has really cut down his K's and learned to take many more walks. with his baserunning speed/skills he'll be about to go 1st and 3rd, something the sox would benefit greatly from, especially with guys like manny/ortiz/lowell behind him.

I think I know why Sox backed up on acquiring Lugo in any trade. How about he sucks defensively? This past season he had committed 24 errors, 3rd to Edgar.

Lugo past 3 seasons- 70 errors

Cora/Graff combined- 54 errors

I highly doubt Sox will pursue him that much. Besides, odds are that they will do what they had mentioned before, look into free agency market.

-------------------------

Boston Herald: The Red Sox had further contact with the representative for free agent shortstop Alex Gonzalez and outfielder Juan Encarnacion, who both played for the Florida Marlins last season. The Sox may pry shortstop Miguel Tejada from Baltimore, but if it doesn’t happen, Gonzalez is the early leading candidate to replace Edgar Renteria. Gonzalez has a .245 lifetime batting average. He batted .264 last year with five home runs and 45 RBI. More importantly, he committed 16 errors, while Renteria led the league with 30.

Bob Ryan seemed crazy about Lugo when asked about him, something about being very productive offensively.

Lugo is offensively about even with Rent, not much at of an upgrade. The main thing that has me and probably the Sox FO straying from Lugo, he averages 20+ errors a season, at least Tejada could back that up with monster offense.

if he has really improved offensively (obp of .362, last season) he is allready far superior to renteria .33X obp last year.

trading for lugo, would also cost us a whole lot less than trading for tejada...

i'm honestly not even worried about the SS hole right now. why stress it, the management will do something and i'll have something to talk about afterwards :-)

i'm so mad that doug is gone! i cried for such a long time when i found out. it had to have been like 10 minuets. he was so good. it seemed like whenever he stepped up to the plate he did something productive. He was also a great catcher. i'll miss my Dougie or as i call him Big Belli Mirabelli.

i have a question- who will catch Wakefield now? Tek obviously isn't very good at it.

we just aquired huckaby from the blue jays to battle with shoppach for the "honor" to catch wake

Trading for Lugo would cost less than trading for Tejada, but how much less? There were reports the Rays wouldn't trade Lugo for Marte. Other reports have said thats not true, but if it is theres no way we're trading for Lugo. Wait one year till hes a free agent and sign him then.

ahhchon finally you say something that makes sense and logical

ahhchon has been a poster here for much longer than you have. He's more respected than you. He shows more use of stats in a day than you will in your lifetime. He always makes logical sense. You, my friend, are stupid.
