Mariners sign 1B Petagine to minor league contract

February 21, 2006

SEATTLE (Ticker) - The Seattle Mariners on Tuesday signed veteran first baseman Roberto Petagine to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Petagine appeared in 18 games with the Boston Red Sox in 2005, batting .281 with a home run and nine RBI in 32 at-bats. He spent most of the season at Class AAA Pawtucket, batting .327 with 18 doubles, 20 homers and 69 RBI.

The 34-year-old Petagine spent the previous six seasons in Japan's Central League, winning three Gold Gloves, two home run titles and an MVP award. He hit .322 with 41 homers and 127 RBI during his MVP season in 2001. Petagine is a .230 career hitter with 11 homers and 52 RBI in 211 major league games with Houston, San Diego, the New York Mets, Cincinnati and the Red Sox.

the red sox won't carry a backup DH on the bench. they want versatility on the bench. since durazo can't play the field that good he is pretty much useless to a team like the red sox who will not waste a bench spot on a backup DH.

They could keep him in AAA and god forbid Ortiz or somebody goes down there he is.

he will be on a big league roster this year if he is healthy regardless if he signed a minor league contract. good hitters like him don't rot away in the minors.

Finally updated.

This morning, a rare event has taken place.

Rotoworld and my computer got along well. After months of getting along well they suddenly started to hate each other for a long while (which is the reason its taken so long for my updates), and this morning they worked. Not perfectly, but well enough to get the job done. :D

White Sox acquire Cintron from Diamondbacks

By Associated Press

Wednesday, March 8, 2006 - Updated: 01:06 PM EST

TUCSON, Ariz. - Infielder Alex Cintron was acquired by the Chicago White Sox from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday for pitcher Jeff Bajenaru. A switch hitter, Cintron batted .273 with 19 doubles, eight home runs and 48 RBIs in 122 games for the Diamondbacks last season, when he played second, third and shortstop. His three pinch-hit home runs tied for the NL lead. A .279 hitter in five seasons, the 27-year-old Cintron is playing for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.

Bajenaru, who turns 28 on March 21, spent most of last season at Triple-A Charlotte, going 4-6 with a 1.41 ERA and 19 saves in 61 relief appearances. The right-hander also allowed three earned runs in 4 1-3 innings in four games with the White Sox.

Thats a huge trade if you ask me. Cintron is a very good player, and very underrated IMO. I think he works out good there. Obviously wont get the playing time he would have in Arizona, but the White Sox have gotten themselves a real good player for their bench.

I remember in January when Sox were expected to go into 2006 with Cora as the shortstop and before Coco Crisp talks. There was a short lived hot stove rumor, David Wells going to Arizona for outfielder Shawn Green and Alex Cintron who wouldve taken backup duties behind Cora.

Kenny Williams did have a smart offseason in helping his team still be the best team in baseball entering the season, I expect them to win the central again. Overall good move for Chicago, and Bajenaru could be a decent middle relief man for Arizona.

Anybody know where I can get a COMPLETE transaction list? As I watch some Spring Training games I see guys playing for certain teams that I wasnt aware they were playing for, and have not recorded on my list. Brian Boehringer for example is in Cubs camp. I hadnt heard this at all until watching the game today. Last I knew he has retired from AAA Columbus last season.

Whenever I hear Boehringers name I have to laugh ... what a miserable failure. Like I said about Arroyo ... when you're not good enough to be on the Pirates you should retire.

I'm currently looking for a list, but haven't found one yet with the complete acquisitions.

In my opinion, you are completely wrong in that. Arroyo got a lot of wins here and i would say he was a success in Boston.

Yeah a whole 24. Considering we made the playoffs both years, that's pathetic.

He had an over .500 record and a decent record. I remember Arroyo had a great game last year and people already talked about him being the ace of the club (bs) but I think he had a good career in Boston.

Mind giving another example of a "good pitcher" who only won 24 games in 2 years for a team that made the playoffs both years? Injuries don't count.

He certainly wasn't a failure in Boston.

But moving his s***** K rates and awful G/F ratio into the GAB is going to make him a collossal failure in Cincinatti. It's going to be hilarious.

The Diamondbacks & Athletics have swapped reliever for reliever

Rotoworld: Diamondbacks acquired RHP Juan Cruz from the Athletics for LHP Brad Halsey.

We like it. Halsey has his uses, but there's not much in the way of upside there. Cruz has always been all about upside. He was quite effective for the Braves in 2004, and he's had an excellent spring, striking out 10 while allowing just an unearned run in 8 1/3 innings. This probably clinches a rotation spot for Claudio Vargas. Cruz should start out working in middle relief and maybe get a chance to start later on. He's worth taking a chance on at $1 in NL-only leagues.

Halsey's a starter. He pitched some good games for us before we traded him, and was decent for Arizona last year. I hope to see him pitch at the stadium this year.

Yeah Halsey was good against the Sox the few # of times he pitched against us

-----------------------------

The Rangers have made a couple of last minute trades

Rangers acquired LHP John Rheinecker and infielder Freddie Bynum from the Athletics for RHP Juan Dominguez.

Rheinecker was used as a reliever this spring, giving up six runs in 8 1/3 innings, so we doubt that he'll be a candidate to fill in for Adam Eaton. He's a reasonable prospect, one who could experience some success in middle relief before season's end. The Rangers would have been better off taking their chances with Dominguez.

Rangers acquired LHP John Koronka and a player to be named from the Cubs for infielder-outfielder Freddie Bynum.

It'll be Koronka's second stint in the organization. The Rangers picked him in the Dec. 2002 Rule 5 draft, only to return him to the Reds the following March. Koronka is basically Terry Mulholland, and we're referring to the 2006 Mulholland, not the quality starter of the early-90s. If he were right-handed, he wouldn't have any shot at all. Since he's a left-hander, he might stick as a middle reliever and spot starter. That's his upside.

The Mariners claimed off of waivers Blue Jays catcher, Guillermo Quiroz who never really could find a way to become their everyday starter

Mariners claimed catcher Guillermo Quiroz off waivers from the Blue Jays.

Even though Gregg Zaun's going on the DL, the Jays chose not to keep the 24-year-old Quiroz, suggesting that they had lost all faith in his ability to play in the majors. We like the pickup for Seattle. Quiroz has more offensive potential than Rene Rivera, and he's hardly a liability defensively. He's not going to be a long-term regular for the Mariners, who have Kenji Johjima for three years and Jeff Clement on the way, but he could spend the year as a backup and then become trade bait.

s***, I missed that picture.

I did hear that BBDOC has a picture of Jetesy in trap-door bullwinkle pajamas, sans undies, taking a dildo that would make Ginger Lynn proud up his not-so-tight-anymore-arse.

that may be the gayest thing on the face of the earth other than Richard Simmons blowing the Yankees team trainer for a look at ARods tiny balls.
