According to the Post's George King, if Boston GM Theo Epstein is unable to negotiate a contract extension with the Red Sox, a move to San Diego - where Padres GM Kevin Towers may be on the outs - is a real possibility. And if this scenario plays out, don't be surprised to see Boston ownership take a run at Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

* * I'd me upset if Theo left, even more upset if Cashmen came here ....

This is good news.

Epstein's dealing

Negotiations on a new contract for GM Theo Epstein will continue this week. Multiple sources indicated that all sides expect a deal to be reached late in the week.

The sides are still working on financial terms, but the difference in what is being offered and what is being sought is not insurmountable. Reports of acrimony between Epstein and team president Larry Lucchino appear to be unfounded.

Cashman is probably on the go, I think he'll end up with the phillies. However, if theo did leave, which is a real possibility, not likely, but its possible, my second pick would be Cashman. He would build our farm system and make good moves. Hes a good GM. Its not his fault George has a hard on for offering to much money over to many years to guys who are to old. I'd rather him over just about anybody else available.

no cashman... just no.

Henry and Lucchino are smart enough owners to realize what Epstein has brought to the team in the past 3 years. He's probably one of the top 5 GM's in the league and deserves to be paid as such.

Cash is a good GM. He's staying with the Yankees, he's making moves for 2006 in the organization. If he were to leave, it would be to Philly, not Boston.
