Red Sox look to gain edge vs. A's

Oakland (81-66) at Boston (86-61), 7:05 p.m. ET

The Red Sox, in a rare spell in which they are scratching for runs, will try to recharge the offense on Saturday night when they take on Oakland's Dan Haren.

On Friday night, the Red Sox clawed their way to a 3-2 victory, ending it when Manny Ramirez was hit on the left elbow by a pitch in the bottom of the 10th.

Bronson Arroyo, who has been inconsistent of late, takes the ball for Boston.

The Red Sox are clinging to a 1 1/2-game lead over the Yankees in the American League East.

Pitching matchup

OAK: RHP Dan Haren

• 13-10, 3.90 ERA in 2005

• 0-1, 2.45 ERA vs. BOS in 2005

BOS: RHP Bronson Arroyo

• 12-9, 4.42 ERA in 2005

• 0-0, 3.29 ERA vs. OAK in 2005

Player to watch

The Red Sox hope catcher Jason Varitek can get back on track. He has just four hits in his last 36 at-bats.

Quotable

"We need [the Yankees] to lose. But if not, we need to just keep on winning. When we just worry about ourselves, we're so much better." -- Johnny Damon

Quick hits

The Red Sox have eight walk-off wins and have won 19 games in their last at-bat. ... David Ortiz is 9-for-22 in his last seven games. ... Kevin Millar is in the midst of a 13-game hitting streak.

that might look good for Oakland, but Danny Haren's ERA vs Boston this season in one game hides the fact of the putrid defense at the time behind him he gave up 6 Runs (1 Earned)---I was at that game, great for a Sox fan to be at, 13-5 score in favor of the Sox with homers by Trot and Millar (1st of the season)

I hope we don't need to bank on 5 unearned runs to win today.

I never said you were. I meant what I said, I hope we don't need 5 unearned runs today to win. What I mean by that is that I want the bats to wake up. Lighten up riverside, I'm not attacking you.

I have a good feeling about this one. There is no basis for it. I just expect the Sox to break out with alot of hits tonight.

Crisp 2-run job in the bottom of the 1st in Cleveland. 2-0 Tribe. Peralta double, Hafner up, no outs. ChiSox lost today, so a Cleveland win puts them 3.5 out. They were 15 down on August 1.

When Arroyo decides it's time to display some suckitude, he doesn't hold anything back. Perfect for 4-innings, then back-to-back walks to start off the 5th.
