I believe he has 28 errors.

This is not acceptable.

What do you guys think?

When does Hanley get a call-up? (obviously not this year but..................)

Renteria takes a seat

Shortstop trying to get untracked

By Chris Snow, Globe Staff | September 15, 2005

TORONTO -- Edgar Renteria loathes hitting in cold weather, which explains his .264 career average in April, his lowest in any month of the regular season. Renteria's next lowest month? That would be September, at .273.

A .288 career hitter, Renteria is down to .279 on the season, largely because of September. He's just 1 for his last 14 and is 10 for 53 (.189) this month.

He made two errors Tuesday night, his 26th and 27th, tying his career high (2000 with St. Louis) and moving him into the league lead. In fact, he's committed the most errors by a Sox shortstop in two decades; Jackie Gutierrez made 31 in 150 games in 1984.

All of this led manager Terry Francona to give Renteria a night off to gather himself, mentally, and physically.

''Let Alex [Cora] play," Francona said before yesterday's 5-3 win the Blue Jays. ''It will be good for him and good for Edgar."

Renteria claims that he's simply made physical mistakes in the field, that the burden of a new city and a pennant race are not affecting him. He also claims that nothing is wrong with his body. The fact that he dives so rarely gives the suggestion that he might be injured. But that, he said, is not the case.

Renteria was asked in particular about a ball hit by Vernon Wells in the first inning Monday, a ball that just evaded Renteria, who with a dive could have snared it.

''You have to be smart," he said. ''Who was the hitter?"

Wells.

''If that is a slower runner, like [John] Olerud, I'll dive, " he said. ''You have to be

look at his career #'s his past 3 years before this 1 as he came into his own. 19 errors in 2002, 16 in 2003 and 11 last season. he was becoming a great fielding SS. I for 1 feel its just a bad year. and i am positive he will not commit more than 20 next season.

his confidence is low because he feels bad when he makes mistakes. i'd rather him feel bad then laugh about it. he's not the only one who has those probs. foulke has confidence probs, schilling did, bellhorn did, millar did, etc. booing doesn't help, it only makes it worse. that is coming from the players mouth.

what happened to everyone loving him last month?? Hes not a bad SS he makes plays most SS wont even bother to try to make and he shows he tries also A-rod did horrible last season for the Yanks what makes you think next year all of you wont be making post like I love Edgah??

Sorry guys, I just can't get high on Renteria.......there's just something about his style of play that you never know if he will make the play or not........watch the difference between him and Cora when they field a ground ball........Cora is smooth while there's no sign of soft hands with Renteria. Hopefully this is just an off year for him and I'll hold final judgement until next year. He sometimes reminds me of Manny.....loses concentration about where and what he's doing. Oh well.....just hope the errors don't jump up and bite us in the next couple of weeks. Go BoSox.......

Rent obviuosly has the physcial tools to be a great player. He seems unprepared or not ready mentally. Over the last few weeks he has made terrible swings with two strikes on him. He looks to me like a guy who can't wait until the season is over.

for what its worth edgar is still hitting 20 points higher than OC..

I dont mind him and think he still will contribute in a big way before this is all over.

I can understand the concern but as someone said those double plays last night are an indication of what he is capable of on the plus side. I dont know if I agree that he is a guy who seems like he cant wait til the season is over, he strikes me as a guy wants to do well so badly that he is pressing.

either way he outta just calm down and play the game. He'll be okay--I hope.

Lithium? Zoloft?

I agree, he does seem to be pressing at times. On the other hand, some of his goofs seem almost Mannyesque, which can lead one to the conclusion of the head not being totally in the game.

I look at this as more of a transistion year for ERent, next year will be the real test for him. Now he's more getting used to AL fields maybe, and etc. Look at ARod, he had a considerable statistical drop last year offensively, now he's considered the MVP this year. If this does continue into next season then theres reson for concern.
