Mark Bellhorn, one of the heroes of the Red Sox's 2004 postseason run, will join the rival Yankees once he clears waivers at 1 p.m. Tuesday, FOXSports.com has learned.

Bellhorn, a switch-hitter, will give the Yankees infield depth and a left-handed bat off the bench. The Yankees currently are without backup infielder Rey Sanchez, who has been on the disabled list since June 10 with a bulging disk in his neck, and designated hitter Ruben Sierra, who has been on the D.L. since July 20 with a hamstring injury.

Bellhorn, 31, batted only .216 with seven homers and 28 RBIs before the Red Sox released him on Saturday, striking out 109 times in 283 at-bats. He had a career year for the Sox last season, posting a .817 on-base/slugging percentage with 17 homers and 82 RBIs

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Bellhorn strikes out way too many times to be a bench player, and he doesn't play good defense. At least Escolona can play at more than one place.

i agree but hes not our problem anymore , thank god, f*** the yanks are stupid

I don't understand why. He's not going to be starting every game like he did for you guys. It's really not that bad a move.

i agree its really for more depth on the bench than anything else

Not surprising, I figured he would be picked up by SOME contending team. But the Yanks weren't one of the teams I thought he would go to because of Cano. But I'm certaintly not surprised, especially after picking up Embree.

What's with yankees jumping on boston castoffs? For all the arrogance and posturing about the best talent money could buy you'd think they didn't have anything in the minors to bring up...o wait they don't, nvm.

like someone else on this board said when they picked up embree:

its kinda funny that yankee fans think they're team is better, yet they are picking up players who were not even good enough to be on the red sox.

i guess they think that if they get enough of boston's leftovers, they might end up being at least *half* as good...lol...

Alright so now let's release Millar so the Yanks can continue the trend of picking up all our s***. They're already 2-2 let's add a 3rd one there.

i think they wait out by the player "dumpster" to pick up all the trash...lol...trash pickin yanks!

But you gotta admit from the outside looking in, its still pretty funny all things considered. If Bellhorn and Embree were released from a 1st place team in the playoff hunt with other "contenders" breathing down their neck, what possible value as the rival Yankees hoping to fight and make the playoffs have in bringin them in?
