Red Sox look to make a stand at Fenway

Detroit (61-64) at Boston (72-53), 8:05 p.m. ET

Veteran right-hander Tim Wakefield will try to get the Red Sox off and running as they open a 14-game homestand against the Tigers on Friday night at Fenway Park.

The start of the game, which had been slated for 7:05 p.m. ET, has been pushed back one hour to give the grounds crew an additional hour to prepare the playing field following this week's Rolling Stones concerts at Fenway Park.

Wakefield leads the Red Sox with his 12 wins and opponents are hitting just .253 against him.

Boston could be a groggy bunch after a late-night flight from Kansas City, but will be anxious to see Fenway Park again. The Red Sox are a dominating 38-18 on their home field this year.

The Tigers will be looking to rebound after Oakland blasted them 11-1 on Thursday. Detroit is a respectable 18-17 against the rugged American League East this year.

Pitching matchup

BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield

• 12-10, 4.29 ERA in 2005

• 1-0, 3.86 ERA vs. DET in 2005

DET: RHP Jason Johnson

• 7-9, 4.09 ERA in 2005

• 0-0, 1.29 ERA vs. BOS in 2005

Player to watch

Third baseman Bill Mueller is hitting .377 over his last 18 games, going 26-for-69 during that stretch.

Quotable

"Home is awesome for us. There's just something about Fenway." -- Red Sox center fielder Johnny Damon

Quick hits

The Red Sox have not come out on top in their last four road series. They have three series losses and one series split over that span. ... Jonathan Papelbon made his first career appearance out of the bullpen on Thursday. He allowed two hits and one run over two innings. ... The six earned runs allowed by Curt Schilling on Thursday were more than he had allowed in nine previous outings against Kansas City. Coming into the game, Schilling had allowed five runs to Kansas City over 25 innings.

On deck

• Saturday: vs. Tigers, 7:05 p.m. ET

• Sunday: vs. Tigers, 2:05 p.m. ET

• Monday: vs. Devil Rays, 7:05 p.m. ET

Please Tito, no more resting guys. Let's have a slugging lineup. A long homestand. Time to finish this thing.

I'm pissed at Millar for hitting that HR two nights ago, because it probably bought him a week's worth of starts were he can boot a grounder (giving up an unearned run) and strike out on 3-pitches. I've tried, but I just can't get this Francona-logic.

EDIT: I know I'm just pissed in-the-moment. I know playing him tonight was the best move because he looked like he was about to get hot at the plate. And, honestly, I'm pulling for him to get out of this funk. But his constant suckitude is starting to chaffe me in some uncomfortable places.

I'm frustrated with this team right now. Of course, I'm fickle, but still. Why can't the sox players just play their games? I mean, I understand needing a day off every now and then but it is just absurd to have two games in a row without significant pieces of the lineup in there. The sox need to step up and play good ball for this entire home stand to hold off the surging Yanks, especially since the Yanks play a relatively weak schedule just like the sox.

Millar needs to go. I'm sorry. I love the guy. He's a great clubhouse guy, but seriously, let Olerud get used to starting. Francona says that Olerud is going to get more time, then he starts Olerud once and moves Millar to left field. If the point is to take millar's disappointing bat out of the lineup, then don't put millar in left. ARGHHHH!!!

Anyway, 1-1, looks like a good inning is underway.

s***. This team is VERY frustrating sometimes. They aren't playing as mediocrely as they did through most of last summer, but sometimes they just look bad. Their pitching is literally incapable of keeping other teams from scoring. Its just not something they are capable of doing. If we're going to win in the post season its going to have to be from the bats, which is never a good place to start.

OUR PITCHING STAFF BLOWS!!!!! Wake is throwing puff balls, our relievers suck balls, Schilling is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much worse than Pedro was last year that its not even funny, we don't have a closer and we're getting beat up by the tigers and the royals. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH meanwhile, the yanks are gaining ground.

Why doesn't NESN get a single damn camera that can actually judge foul balls. They are so deceptive in that right field corner.
