I just heard WEEI report that Bellhorn has been designated for assignment. I'm not surprised with this news, yet I feel kind of bad for him.

Thanks for 2004 and good luck.

feel bad for him and grateful for what he did. That home run in Game 1 of the World Series was clutch.

World Series game winning homerun:

You drove me nuts Bellhorn. You and your strikeouts, but I cant take away from you your postseason heroics. Thank you for 2004, and If you ever come back to fenway on an opposing team, I will cheer you loudly. A local boy from Boston who shined with Sox. Thank you.

yup they are reporting this on redsox.com now.....

Bellhorn out at second base

Red Sox let go one of their postseason heroes

ANAHEIM -- One day before his Minor League rehab assignment was set to expire, second baseman Mark Bellhorn was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Friday.

Bellhorn, who produced two hits last October that will forever remain a part of Red Sox history, had a rough go of it this season, hitting .216 with seven homers and 28 RBIs in 85 games.

That 85th game came on July 17 against the Yankees, when Bellhorn sprained his left thumb while making a terrific play to rob Jason Giambi of a hit.

Three days later, the Red Sox acquired Tony Graffanino from the Royals. Both Graffanino and Alex Cora have greatly solidified second base for the Red Sox, making it hard for the club to fit Bellhorn back into the mix.

By designating Bellhorn for assignment, the Red Sox have 10 days to either trade him or outright him to the Minor Leagues.

Out of respect for Bellhorn, general manager Theo Epstein is working with the second baseman's agent to try to find a Major League team that might have more playing time for the switch-hitter.

"He's a Major League player," said Epstein. "If there's an opportunity with another Major League team, that might be what's best for him. We'll see."

If Epstein can't work out a trade, Bellhorn could possibly wind up back with the Red Sox once the roster is expanded on Sept. 1.

In 2004, Bellhorn emerged into one of the biggest surprises on the Red Sox. He scored 93 runs, drew 88 walks, hit 17 homers and drove in 82 runs.

But Bellhorn saved his most important hits for the postseason. In Game 6 against the Yankees in the American League Championship Series, he hit a three-run homer to left field, helping the Red Sox to a 4-2 win and forcing Game 7. Then, in Game 1 of the World Series, Bellhorn snapped a 9-9 tie with a two-run homer off the foul pole in right field. Helped by Bellhorn's game-winner, the Red Sox went on to sweep the Cardinals for their first World Series championship in 86 years.

wow, based on most of the responses here you'd think he was in Boston for 10 years rather than 3.

But hey, we can use another versatile bench player here in NY so thanks for gettin grid of him guys

3 years? Try 1 1/2. That's all. Well, at least he didn't have to strike out more times this year than last year. Like Sizzlin said, thanks for those games in the postseason where you helped us. Other than that, we'll take Graffy, thanks.

He could get time giving Cano a rest every once in a while. I honestly wouldn't put it past the Yanks to try to get him.

Never forget the headline Mark Of A Winner in the Herald after he banged the Pesky Pole in Game 1. That whole roster has a special place, but the game moves on.

Somebody asked why all the love for Mark Bellhorn. Well, because he was one of the 25, thats why. The guy should never have to buy a beer while in Boston again. I think people forget we waited 86 years for a World Championship. Every one of those 25 guys should be loved and remembered. Whether its Dave Roberts, Mark Bellhorn, Leskanic, Schilling, McCarty (even tho he was left off the playoff roster)......any of them. He was one of the players who broke the curse, but even further than that, he was the starting second baseman who was very clutch at times.

People are so short-sighted. Its unbelievable that people forget it took 86 years to win the WS, and that Mark Bellhorn had a lot to do with changing that.

Again....thank you Bellhorn

short sighted?no, but practical yes.

sure he was part of the team and no one will forget that....but in truth it is extremely short sighted to think that should mean anything this year. anything.

No one will ever stop being grateful for last year, but this season that wont get you very far..no will it..

millar has been riding the wave from last year for this whole seaons, and he didnt even do as much as bellhorn.I asy good bye, thank you and good luck--elsewhere.

Belhorn Frusterated me more than any other hitter this team has ever had, but he was clutch last year and there is no denying that, good luck in the future Mark!

It's too bad Bellhorn has had the year he's been having but he should be remembered for the great things he did last year and the key role he played last year. Unfortunately, it's Theo's job to put the best team out there and right now, Graffanino over Bellhorn at second base is the best choice for the team.

It isn't being short sighted, it's common sense, you have a guy who is on pace to set the record for strike outs in one season, and then you have a guy who is hitting .300, a no brainer.

I'm not saying I hate the guy and what he did in the post season of 2004 doesn't matter, or isn't important, but when it's time to go, it's time to go.

Not once in any of my posts did I say that I would choose Bellhorn over anyone. Not once did I say we should keep him, in fact I've said quite the opposite in other threads. So don't make it seem like I was choosing Bellhorn over anybody else, thats just putting words in my mouth. In fact I have wanted Bellhorn and Millar off the team since June 1st.

I am thankfull however of what those guys did. I guess I just appreciate what those guys did more than some people. People say, "its a new year, move on" like we have had the privlege of seeing the sox win 5 championships in the last decade. Well, we haven't, and anybody with baseball knowledge knows that.

It was obvious early that Bellhorn was not going to help much, however I will not hold this season against him because without Mark Bellhorn's nail in the coffin in game 7 of the ALCS who knows what happens.
