Say It Ain't So! Red Sox Top Yankees on the Web, Too

By TANIA RALLI, NY Post

Published: August 15, 2005

The Boston Red Sox's recent edge over the New York Yankees appears to extend to the digital domain. And George Steinbrenner probably can't do anything about it. Last week, the sports publisher Street & Smith's released its ranking of professional sports Web sites, and in the baseball category the Red Sox led the major leagues while the Yankees were near the cellar - in 27th place among 30 teams.

The Boston Red Sox were first in a survey of Major League Baseball Web sites.

The ratings, published by Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, were drawn from a study by the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, which evaluated the sites according to content, design, fan engagement and merchandise for sale.

The Yankees' management was not happy to see its vaunted brand rated so low.

The ranking is illogical because the Yankees organization has no influence over the Web site, said Lonn Trost, the Yankees' chief operating officer. "We don't control it," he said, "and we don't provide content."

No major league team has controlled its own Web site since 2000, when Major League Baseball centralized Internet operations for the teams. Each team agreed to pay $4 million over four years to set up a company, Major League Baseball Advanced Media, to design and operate team Web sites. The teams each received a 3 percent stake in the Web company.

"We put a lot of emphasis on creating original and multimedia content," said Dinn Mann, the senior vice president and editor in chief of Major League Baseball Advanced Media. While there is a uniform look and feel to all 30 Web sites, each team's content is the responsibility of a webmaster employed by Mr. Mann's organization.

Oh no, I think it's quite amusing and funny. :) In a way it shows how much the Yankees get under your skin. Yeah, I can definitely take a joke or two.

More competition in the AL East will be a good thing. Looking forward to seeing that.

You are going to dig up EVERYTHING where the Sox trump the Yanks, right?

Mwahaha, now Steinbrenner has to get on his PR peeps or something. ;)

Have a little fun. Besides, it's your daunting task to try a find a few glimmers of hope for the Yanks. Hint, we're a little bias being a Red Sox site and all.

It all comes down to how die-hard the fan base is. I probably check redsox.com about 5 times a day just checking up on things or looking at a box score from the previous game. We've always said the Yankees have some of the worst fans in the game, this just proves it in another way if you will.

Sox Fan on Cape: LOL, I remember getting us into this another time. I meant to say it's interesting thing to see; I'm not offended.

Maybe I should go over to the YES boards and find some blind optimism. But my IQ would drop a couple points. ;)

YankeeDoodle, just have a little fun. Yanks obviously have a proud past, this just doesn't seem to be their year. I got no problem with you, get a kick out of a lot of you posts . Carry on..........

Yeah, I know. Yankee fans suffer wrist injuries from banging their hands on the counter from watching this team ineptness at times, but we still come back. Frickin' pitching sure is delicate, though. ;)

Winning titles, heck, even being in contention, isn't something to be taken for granted. I guess many people forget that the Yankees weren't always the success story.

Actually, not that I have anything against the Cubs, I'm taking the Cardinals in that rivalry. Cubs fans must be miffed that the one-two pitching punch is Buehrle-Garland, not Prior-Wood.

Yeah, one day when all three teams get rid of their curses, what's next, apocalypse? :dunno:

It is somewhat ridiculous the amount of Sox-related sites that are out there. And they're all updated frequently. We really are a sickly passionate bunch.
