It has truly impacted my life," he says. "People are often remembered for one thing in their career, whether it's good or bad. Fortunately for me, that stolen base is embedded in people's minds."

On the basis of a three-second dash to second base, Roberts made himself into a Red Sox folk hero. For "that stolen base" is the most celebrated pilfered sack in Red Sox history, perhaps even in the annals of baseball.

great article, Dave Roberts will have his career defined by that single play the same way Bill Buckner had his career defined by a single play

Well yes. One extremely good and the infamous. Dave on top of it, is really a nice guy. I really wish he was still with us.

as much as I wish Roberts was still here, he deserved his chance to be an everyday player for a team but it's definitely tough to see a guy go when you know he played an integral part in the Red Sox winning the World Series last year

I was kind of hoping we would trade fr him at the deadline, but the Padres are in first (as bad as they are) and had no reaso to trade him.

This article brought a smile to my face this Sunday morning. As the Sox made their playoff run last fall, I was constantly telling people about the significance of "The Stolen Base", along with everyone else. I now have a home jersey with #31 because of Dave Roberts.

ill take Kapler over Payton any day anyway

If you think that you're an idiot. Kapler hit like .190 in JAPAN, Payton was actually doing very well with us and is tearing it up in Oakland.

I disagree...did you ever think that the reason Kapler did so poorly in Japan was purely psychological? The guy was half way across the world in a foreign country...he's even admitted how homesick he was.

Since he was activated on July 30th, the guy has a .381 batting average and has played very well. I remember him doing quite well last year too, have you forgotten that?!

I have often said (and have heard other Sox players say it as well) that Kapler is one of the most underestimated players on the team.

Not only does the guy play well, but he has a heart of gold. Trot said of his teammate "If there was ever a guy that epitomized team play, it's Gabe."

I LOVE that he is back and hope that you come to that realization as well!

how about factoring what each guy does for morale? Kapler is a guy the entire team likes, is great for morale, was along for the ride last year and is actually a pretty solid player

Jay Payton did nothing but bitch about his playing time since a few weeks into the season and even went as far as confronting Francona in front of the entire team and the public in the dugout

If you're general manager for Team X, then yea, maybe Payton is better talent wise but as far as the Boston Red Sox go, I'd rather have Kapler

and quite frankly, I'm not sure why you had to bring name-calling into this, I clearly have a valid point and factoring in what a guy was batting in a country on the other side of the planet in a situation he was very unhappy in is a pretty lame argument in itself

Yeah he did bitch about his playing time... while hitting .300. Gabe Kapler, outside of a 40 game season in 2002 in Colorado, has never hit .300 in his career. Paytons a better hitter, which is exactly what we need to take Trot's place. Put it this way, if we still had Payton right now Millar would not be playing Right Field against the Texas Rangers tonight.

Kapler is so bad with the bat Tito would rather have Millar in Right Field than have Kapler out there. That in itself proves Kaplers little worth.

Sox fans tend to give Kapler far more credit than he deseres, because he was a big part of the 2004 team, but as far as comparing him to Jay Payton, there is no comparison Payton is jsut a better player.

I never said he wasn't a better player which is why I said the following:

"If you're general manager for Team X, then yea, maybe Payton is better talent wise but as far as the Boston Red Sox go, I'd rather have Kapler"

But you're talking as if team morale and mood in the clubhouse means absolutely nothing.

It doesn't. When it all comes down to it, when a player digs in the box, "team morale" is the last thing on his mind. The team would be better off with Jay Payton patroling Right, and digging in four times a game than Gabe Kapler.

do the red sox win the world series last year if team morale wasn't so good? I seriously have my doubts. champions have one thing in common, they don't just play for themselves, they play for their teammates

The Red Sox won the World Series last year because they were the best team in baseball, it has nothing to do with "morale".

Team's can have worse "chemistry", than men with thier mother-in-laws, if they are the best team in baseball, they will win.

For example the the A's of the 1970's. Those guys got along worse than teenage girls, they beat the s*** out of each other every day in thier clubhouse. Players actually got injuries, by getting in fights with each other. They didn't take it with them out on the field and won the World Series in '72, '73, and '74. As terribly as those guys got along, they still won.

Those players didn't "Play for each other". Reggie Jackson left as soon as he could, they had the best team and they won.

Chemistry is over rated. Especially here in Boston.

This is my favorite part

''When I was with the Dodgers," Roberts reflects, ''Maury Wills once told me that there will come a point in my career when everyone in the ballpark will know that I have to steal a base, and I will steal that base. When I got out there, I knew that was what Maury Wills was talking about."
