David Wells on his weekly talk with the afternnon crew on; AM/FM the Score in RI stated: " I never thought I could like Manny when I played for the Yankees. However, I have gotten to know him as a teammate and, he is a very good guy". However, later in the boadcast he states: " Manny kind of does what he wants, you know, he will decide when he wants to run out a grounder, or loaf after a fly ball". " But what do you do, get rid of the guy altogether, I don't know. It is a flip of a coin really". Later, he went on to say: " Look, Jason is our Captain, but this is a TEAM game. I will pitch on three days rest if needed". " You know, guys get hurt, one of your guys is whacked with a line drive, I mean, you step up and do things for the better of the team, that is what this about". " I may take some heat for my comments, but I am Veteran and I speak from my heart".

Some VERY interesting comments from Wells. Certainly suggests this has been an issue in the Clubhouse and even further suggests that the veteran guys are getting tired of his act.

I think Wells realizes that they need to put up with him like it or not.

He's ambivalant about Manny, but he's a professional and will do what's needed to win. I think that's what he was saying.

Baseball isn't football. It's a team game TO EXTENT, but what it really boils down to is one on one matchups. Pitcher versus batter, and thats it. There's no 10 guys running downfield trying to get open, blocking for each other and diving for errant throws.

For me, this whole situation boils down to the fact that Manny overcomes his "attitude" with something called his "bat." Manny hasn't been running out ground balls since we got him 4 years ago. He's always stopped to watch homeruns (which, let me remind you, he hits a lot of). This is only an issue now because it's become a huge deal that he's asked to be traded, another thing that he does frequently.

Bottom line, Manny wins us many more games than he costs us with his stupidity. He is protection for other players in the lineup (Manny-Ortiz mean anything to you?), and we need him on the team. Wells may be upset at Manny not stepping up after teammates went down, I think we all are, but I can tell you that he sure is happy to have him on the team when Many hits a go-ahead 3 run shot to put the sox on top when Wells is pitching.

When is the last time the Red Sox had a player of Manny's caliber? 1961?

Manny haters shut the f#ck up! Go to Lids and buy yourself a Rockies cap.

When they got Oritz. He may not have done it as long but he's pretty much matched manny the last 2 years, and will do it again this year. Not a dig at Manny.

Mo Vaughn, 1994-1998. Nomar pre-2001. Both of their departures seemed to cripple the Red Sox, or not.

No one's saying Manny isn't good, but the fact he's whining about being mistreated in Boston is ridiculous. He deserved to be booed the other night and I hope it continues. Manny is exactly what has been wrong with the Sox the last five years. Every player has their own ego. Him and Pedro are the same. Yeah they'll put up the numbers when called upon, but the antics are not worth the salary sometimes. The days off, or last year's hamstring issue, all this just puts himself above the team. Meanwhile guys like Damon and seems like Clement play hurt to try to help the team win. The Sox easily have the ability to replace Manny's bat with another very good one. WE DON'T NEED HIM. We got all the way to the World Series virtually without him and then four good games saved him, but the Sox would've won those games anyway. I would much rather the Sox play a guy like Kapler or Stern everyday and lose a little offense than play a disgruntled $20 Million whinebag who doesn't give a damn. I hope today is Manny's last day as a Sock, and if not I hope it's his last season. And I hope his next stop begins the end of his career.

johnny damon was ripping at Manny as well stating privacy issue is baloney and that no matter what gteam he goes to, he wont have a private lief, so he needs to grow up and deal with being the sports star he is

great post noonan...I think we do need him, however, I would root for george bush (ugh)..if he put 28+ homers and 90+ rbi's through the end of july.

but everything else you said is true and well put!

and same with riverside..damon is a true class act. If you notice every artitcle written about the sox,

includes a quote from damon. he tsalks to the media, he is accessible, and he is a gentlemen, and guess what the press rarely if ever says anything bad about him..

it goes both ways even in boston. You treat people like s*** and they will rip you...manny and pedro shat on the press corps and when they had problems the pres was salivating to tip them up.

a no brainer.
