The Phillies are one of the teams trying to get Baez, and the reason is they believe they can trade closer Billy Wagner for a starting pitcher. Both the Red Sox and White Sox have indicated to Philadelphia they might be interested in sending A.J. Burnett there in exchange for Wagner if they could get Burnett from the Marlins.

 

The Red Sox are telling people they have no plans to trade right-hander Bronson Arroyo, in spite of earlier talks that centered on him going to Florida as part of a Burnett deal.

They've asked about Florida's A.J. Burnett, but the Marlins won't deal him within the division. They've tried to run end arounds to get Burnett in a three-team deal. No dice.

 

The Phillies have tried to get Bronson Arroyo or Wade Miller from Boston, but the Red Sox are in the Burnett sweepstakes and would have to include Arroyo to make that deal happen. They've contacted Tampa Bay about reliever Danys Baez. He might be a good addition, but are the Phils willing to meet Tampa Bay's typical shoot-for-the-moon asking prices?

yeah right that trade sucks...wagner is a free agent at the end of the season and you're gonna give up one of your best young pitchers? Arroyo is 9-6 this year...give up wade miller instead he's 3-3 with an era over 5

arroyo is going to be in the bullpen anyway when schill goes back to the rotation. we need another good experienced relief pitcher (preferably a lefty). We need wagner or romero but i dont want to give up bill mueller

well the only way you are going to get romero is by giving up mueller, and now the twins want a prospect, most likely anibal sanchez. I don't think the twins are interested in youk. And they don't want to part with Lohse. I would rather have lohse than mays.

I wouldn't be opposed to getting wagner but now the phillies are back in the race so I think its a longshot...hope I'm wrong though
