While you may think the Renteria signing takes away money from Varitek. I disagree. Gammons was on WEEI today and he thinks that we'll be able to sign Renteria, Pedro AND Varitek this week. So I really like the moves Theo is making, because we aren't really making any significant changes except we are getting Renteria who is a better hitter and an equal defensive shortstop to Cabrera.

Really? I didn't see that coming. The Sox may be over the $140 million mark this year.

take everything you hear from gammons with a grain of salt. the guy bugs me. yeah he's a sox fan but he's so god damn biased towards the sox on espn, it's redonKulous.

as for when i said that signing rent is stupid. it's stupid if we sign rent just so we could use hanley as trade bait. i'm going to cry when hanley is hitting 25+ hr's, 95 + rbi's and batting .325 with GG defence for leauge minimum.

I don't get it, we won't give 9 million per year to Caberra, but we'll give 10 million to Renteria.

thats what i don't get, we were like 'we don't have enough money go sign 'the o.c.' (i didn't make that up) but then we go out and get a more expensive guy... it makes no sense

personally I think he looks like a dead gerbal and I cant get by that, and I think he is a windbag and has never said anything original or new.

he tries to act like he is an insider but I dont know he just says the asame old s***.

Now I am runnning cfor cover becasue this is what t I said last time.

He was the 1st one who broke the Renteria story, which was somewhat of a surprise. As far as Cabrera, Renteria is a better SS than Cabrera. Once Theo realized he wasn't going to sign Pavano, I think he decided to spend Pavano's money on Renteria.

which is just stupid. his OPS last year was under .750. no way worth 11 mill a year. i'm hating this move more and more. paying big bucks for renteria is like playing for a name. cabrera is just as good as rent for 4 mill less.

plus, i see no reason to HAVE to spend the money that isn't being used on pavano. hell, save it. give free t-shirts to sox fans. damn. no need to block up hanley's spot.

this will the the first bad decision theo has made if he signs renteria. he will be almost untradable in 2 years unless the sox eats up part of his contract. i'm sure he'll be back heavy too.

Renteria, 29, played the last six seasons for the Cardinals after beginning his career with the Florida Marlins, for whom he was World Series MVP in 1997. A four-time All-Star, Renteria is a career .289 hitter, batting .366 against left-handers last season, when he hit .287 overall. He made just 11 errors in 149 games for the Cardinals, and was considered a leader in the Cardinals' clubhouse.

they are signing him for four years, and it's far from stupid, give me back that peace pipe.

How hard would it be for Hanley to switch to 2nd base? anyone? zenny?

It wouldn't be hard at all, but it would be a waste of his talents (like what the Mets did with the Reyes/Matsui situation). Hanley is already a better defender than Renteria is. Edgar should be the one playing 2B when the time comes.

ok, so he'll be ready at 2 years TOPS. lets also give him a year to get aquanted with mlb pitching.

so would you rather be paying leauge minimum for hanley who will hit (most likely) better and play better D or would you rather be paying 10 mill a season for rent?

no, you read it right. hanley will become a better hitter than renteria. i don't know what the fuss is about renteria. he's a solid ss. one of the top 5 in the game (due to the fact that there really are not that many awsome ss). but his numbers don't blow me away. last year was his career year. his career is plagued with ups and downs. granted he's still very young but there has still be lots of ups and downs.

i can easily see hanley being able to hit more than 16 hr's a year and batting in more than 80 rbi's per year (renteria's ave, give a few). that with better defence for league minimun. i'll take that any day and spend the money on extending contracts (when the time comes) of damon, nixon, mueller, ortiz, youk.

p.s.- i didn't say he'll be a better hitter next year. i said in 06.. if you read what i said you will see that i gave hanley 1 year to get used to mlb pitching.

hanely this , hanely that...he has played 30 games at AA...I think this debate has to wait a year or two one way or another. He's a top prospect to be sure, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. He's had some injuries and some maturity issues. Too much too soon. I suspect he'll be in pawtucket.

Comparing him to nomar and to edgar is nuts. He has a shot but he's just a kid.

John you say you dont know what all the fuss is about rent.--um, you answred your own quetsion one of the top 5 shortstops.

How can you see hanley hitting that many homers when he has nt hit them in the minors???

just asking?

The Edgar Renteria story took yet another twist Saturday. The Cardinals, who at one point thought they were out of the running, were then informed by Renteria's agent, Jeff Lane, that reports had been exaggerated of an impending deal with Boston. So Renteria is now talking with both teams, along with the Tigers.

I guess it wasn't done yet. In spite of everything written here yesterday I still think I'd love to see Edgar on the sox..even over Orlando...

I hope they sign him.
