Despite his freedom to negotiate with any team in the majors, Jason Varitek gave every indication last night that he is focused on trying to work out a deal to remain with the Sox. He said he participated in a discussion by phone with Sox officials several days ago and will do so again this week. "I can say that things are working," Varitek said before he received a Champions Award from Children's Hospital at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. "We're communicating pretty well and things are positive. We need our people and their people to continue communicating." Though he declined to discusss specifics of the talks -- he has asked for $55 milllion over five years with a no-trade clause -- he made it clear he considers a long-term contract crucial.

According to agent Bob Garber, who represents free agent catcher Damian Miller, the Sox yesterday made a two-year offer to the 35-year-old backstop. Miller, who spent this year with the Oakland A's, is seeking a three-year commitment and is expected to meet with other teams this week before a possible meeting in Boston next week. Garber would not disclose specific terms of the Red Sox' offer, but the catcher earned a base salary of $3 million with Oakland in 2004, the second of a two-year contract. That suggests the Sox' total offer likely is in the range of $6.5 million to $7 million for the two years.

Lowe back would be an interesting idea. There would be 2 situations, the first being that it will end up like a Kevin Brown scenario, where he doesnt live up what he is gonna get paid. Or, there could be the situation where he regains his 2001 for and pitches his ass off for it. If I were the Sox, I would sign him to a 1 year deal, and see what happens from there, and see which pitcher shows up, either the 2001 Lowe or the 2004 Lowe.

On Lowe:

I understand that a lot of people crap on Lowe. Hell, I've done it!

Yes, he's inconsistent. Yes, he's got problems keeping his cool. But as we've seen, Derek Lowe CAN be a dominant pitcher.

I would not be opposed to seeing Derek back in a Boston uniform, I just hope the Sox don't overpay for him.

On Tek:

5 years $50 million is too much. 4 years, $40 million is too much. I would go as high as 4 years $36 million for Tek. He'll still be making $9 mil at 36 which is pretty high.

i would not give tek more than 3 years with a 4th year club option, PERIOD.

as for lowe, yeah he pitched well, but also recall that it was against the yankees who were absolutely dead in the water, they couldn't hit the broad side of a beach ball. then he shut down the cards, who did NOTHING offensively after game 1.

don't let his post season success fool you, lowe is not worth the 3 years 27 mill that he rejected. he's not worth more than 6 or 7 mill a year.
