I'd rather face the Yankees in the ALCS and beat them. If the twins beat them, all my yankee fan relatives will be all over me about the only reason we got to the world series was because we didnt face the yankees. <_>

Anyway, here are my predictions

Redsox>Angels

Redsox>Yankees

Twins>Yankees

Redsox>Cardinals REDSOX

Dodgers>Cardinals

Astros>Cardinals

Astros>Braves

Mine:

ALDS:

Red Sox over Angels -- I honestly believe they'll do it. This is an unbiased opinion.

Yankees over Twins -- Minnesota has little after Santana. He may win 2 games, but I don't know if the Twins can take the other games.

NLDS:

Astros over Braves -- I read yesterday that no team from Texas has ever won a postseason series. It seems like in the past Houston always faced superior Braves teams, and the Rangers got the Yankees (in their prime). If Houston loses this series, it will be an upset.

St. Louis over Los Angeles -- St. Louis has got potentially the best offense in the game, and a decent pitching staff to boot. Both are strong teams... But I've got to go with STL.

ALCS:

Boston over New York -- I have to say this, because we have a superior team.... but I have a sinking feeling we're headed for another dissapointment.

NLCS:

Houston over St. Louis -- I'm going with the popular choice here, because Houston can ride Clemens/Oswalt to a victory here.

World Series:

Houston over Boston -- Houston's got two aces, and they're on a mission. Plus, who am I to PREDICT that the Red Sox FINALLY win after 86 years?

i know huh bruno. no matter what you just don't want to say that the sox will win. i mean it's been heartbreak after heartbreak. even during the years we missed the postseason. it still hurt.

Element,

I have a small request. I think it's a great thread to have dedicated to the entire playoff picture, but instead of making a new post every day with the updated "standings," could you simply edit the first one? That way it's easier to find the up-to-date results.

Thanks

You folks have your opinions, and I've got mine. Again, it's a hard choice to pick between Erstad and Millar, because litterally they have entirely different offensive abilities.

Different where? They hit for the same average, but Millar is a better slugger and walk-taker. The only difference is that Erstad is not as good as Millar offensively. Granted, defensively, the edge goes to Erstad big-time, but it's not enough of an edge to make up for the glaring deficiency he lacks offensively. Darin Erstad might be the worst offensive 1B in baseball. Find a worse everyday 1B and I'll money-order you a nickel.

Posted

Erstad's a 300 hitter who stole 16 bases this year. He's NOT a typical first baseman, because he's not a power hitter.

I have to say that the only first baseman I could find with worse numbers than Estrad were:

Todd Zeile.

Doug Mientkiewicz.

I'd actually take Erstad over Olerud right now, too.

Granted, Olerud is the only STARTING first baseman that has been worse than Erstad this season.

You can get power from any position now a days, so I'm not judging him purely on position. OK, Erstad hits .300, but batting average is the least telling stat of them all. Millar is on base about 5% more frequently. That's a huge difference. So, he can steal ~15 bases? Big deal, he's never on base to do any of that stealing. What Erstad adds in base stealing, Millar destroys him in ability to get on base and hit for power. I would take Millar over Erstad any day of the week, no matter how much Peter Gammons wants man-sex from Erstad.

Cards join Sox in teams that are up 2-0, i think Cards have a good shot at getting into the World Series on the NL side.

I agree. All the analysts were saying the Cards won't have the pitching to go far, but it's done well so far (granted, against a relatively weak LA lineup).

If the Cards and Yanks play against each other in the WS, it may be the highest scoring World Series of all time!

I can see the headline now: Game 7: St. Louis Cardinals are the new world champion! subheader: Beat New York 15-14 in 12.

Posted
I would go with the Cards against the Astros, because it looks like Houston is having trouble with Atlanta. Also, while the Cards pitching isn't that great, neither is the Astros when you throw the Cards lineup at them. This has to be one of the top 2 or 3 lineups in baseball.

The Cardinals are dangerous, and so are the Astros. I'd be surprised if these two teams don't face each other in the NLCS.

I think you've got to give Houston a fighting chance, because they do have 2 very good starters in Oswalt and Clemens. However, their bullpen is weak. Lidge has been a reliable reliever, but who's going to get him the ball with a lead? Also, this team has been desimated by the loss of both Wade Miller and Andy Pettite. This is a much less dangerous rotation without them. No offense to Brandon Backe, but he's not exactly the guy Houston dreamed of being their #3 starter in a VERY important game back in April.

I have a TON of respect for Craig Biggio, he's one of those guys who really plays the game the right way. But his struggles in the playoffs have been HISTORIC. He's going to need to kick it up a notch if Houston wants to go deep into October.

St. Louis' rotation isn't a whole lot better, when you look at guys like Jeff Suppan, Matt Morris, and Jason Marquis determining your fate... But this team has proven that it can slug its way to victory.

In a potential Astros-Cardinals 7 game series, Houston's got a shot to win whenever Oswalt or Clemens pitch. Considering that it's unlikely that they'll win EVERY time those two pitch, they'll need either Backe or Pete Munro to step up and be this team's #3.

The Astros can ride Clemens/Oswalt to the World Series (in fact, I predicted that earlier in this very thread I believe) but they'll need some help from guys like Biggio, Bagwell, Kent, etc.

I'm still predicting Houston over Atlanta, St. Louis over Los Angeles, Yankees over Twins, Red Sox over Angels... nothing's changed there.

I'm starting to have doubts about Houston over St. Louis though...

So, with the MFY pitching Vasquez tonight and the Twinkies pitching Santana we know its going to be a good game. But say the MFY loose tonight and are forced to a fifth game in NY who would Torre pitch in the final game? Should he give the ball back to Mussina or try his luck with El Dookie and hope his (exhausted) bullpen helps him out?

I think pitching El Dookie would be the most idiotic thing in the world. But who knows, if Dookie is healthyhe can put up very good numbers (8-0 to start the season). In his last start Aug. 19th against the Twinkies this was his line:

6.1 IP/7 H/5 R/5 ER/3 BB/6 K/107 P/ND(13-10) - MFY won this game

His last outing against TOR was a train wreck ontop of a plane crash:

3.0 IP/5 H/5 R/5 ER/1 HR/3 BB/2 K/64 P/L(8-2)

Overall Dookie has had a good season posting:

84.2 IP/73 H/31 R/31 ER/9 HR/36 BB/84 K/1432 P/8-2 record/3.30 ERA

If his is healthy i think this is a no-brainer. But if he cant pitch (or Torre doesnt want him too) Mussina will get the call. Mike has pitched against the Twinkies twice this year once on Aug. 18th and the last on Sep. 29th.

Aug. 18th - 4.0 IP/5 H/4 R/4 ER/1 HR/2 BB/2 K/68 P/L(9-7)

Sep. 29th - 6.0 IP/7 H/3 R/3 ER/ 1 HR/4 BB/3 K/101 P/ND(5-3) - MFY won.

Game 1 - 7.0 IP/7 H/2 R/2 ER/1 HR/1 BB/7 K/103 P/L(2-0)

Although Mussina managed a good outing in Game 1 his two regular season starts against the Twinkies weren't that great. Should he pitch Game 5 and win we can only hope Leiber starts off the ALCS against us. As for the Twinkies beating the MFY, all i have to say is that Santana and Radke aren't going to pitch in Game 1 or 2 of the ALCS if they do. Plus...bring the Empire ON!

If I was Torre id go with Mussina and put Leiber/Dookie (if healthy) on the hill in Game 1 of ALCS.

Either way a five game series is going screw up both rotations.
