Who will win the AL east?

This topic was also one of the ones deleted. It was one of the better topics here, so it's sad that its gone. Anyway, we can continue the discussion here.

I still voted yankees in this poll. We're still 2.5 back, and they're playing much better than they were. Sure the sox are playing well, but 2.5 games is a lot to make up, even with 6 games against the yankees.

Those games will define the AL east for sure, but we can't treat it like a sure thing. I still check Anaheim's box score every night (they're 6 behind right now). Plus, it might be a better thing to win via the wild card, seeing as how badly we've owned Anaheim and Oakland recently, and those are the two teams we could face. I don't want to face the twins, even with home field advantage if we were to win the division.

The Sox in my eyes are just way to strong and the Yankees don't have enough pitching. The Yankees are definitly making the playoffs no matter what but this is the first year I can look at thier team and say there is no way they can win in the post season.

I actually changed my vote from last time when I voted "Yankees," and went with the Sox this time.

As I said in the old thread, the schedule won't be an excuse for either team since the average winning percentage is the same. It's very discouraging that we split the Mariners series, and that we're 3.5 back. I realize how difficult it will be for the Red Sox to actually take it, but we are the stronger team, and I think we can take 4 of 6 of the remaining games. If we can stay close (2.5 - 3.5 games out), we can make up some ground head to head, and hope from some help from Minnesota late in September.

A split of the 6 games with the MFY not only keeps the Sox out of first but may also cut the wild card lead over the Angels. The doubleheader in Baltimore on Oct. 2 can also be a problem to winning the division.

This team certainly has its work cut out for them. Considering that New York is playing KC this week (the worst team in the American League) if the Red Sox don't sweep Tampa Bay the Yankees could lock up the division before they even play.

If the rotations stay the way they are now, here are the potential matchups for this weekend:

game 1: Arroyo vs El Duque (the Yankees best pitcher)

game 2: Lowe vs Leiber

game 3: Martinez vs Mussina

Game 1: Advantage Yankees. Duque's been lights out lately.

Game 2: Draw. Lieber's 0-0 with a 4.91 ERA in 2 starts against the Red Sox this year. Lowe is 2-2 with a 7.08 ERA against the Yankees.

Game 3: Advantage Red Sox. Pedro is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA against the Yankees. Mussina is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA against Boston.

So, it's quite possible we lose 2 of 3 to New York in that first series....

yankee stadium. Lieber has picked it of late too, so the edge goes to the yanks.

I wouldnt put anything in the hands of Lieber he has performed lately but he is not someone I would hand the ball to.

Both the MFY and the Sox have shown a knack for stumbling down the stretch here. 22-0 was no fluke, and neither is losing September games to rookie pitchers.

The way Hurricane Ivan is tracking, it's very possible two of the three games in the bronx this weekend could be rained out.

Thursday was "Coin Toss Day." The one game playoff (if necessary) to decide the AL East would be in the Bronx. If the Sox and Angels tie for the wild card, the game is at Fenway.

Deep to left, manny will get it, it's a HR. Bubba Crosby with a 3 run homerun to put the yankees in front 3-2.
