Nixon moves up to Triple-A

By Ian Browne / MLB.com

BOSTON -- As the Red Sox welcomed Nomar Garciaparra's big bat back to the lineup Wednesday night, there was hope that another one wasn't far behind. Right fielder Trot Nixon, who checked back into Fenway Park and worked out with the team, will begin playing for Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday night.

Nixon hasn't played a game this season after being shelved early in Spring Training with a herniated disc, and then in early May, straining his left quad.

He played five innings in right field for Single-A Sarasota on Tuesday night, and now feels ready to take the next step. He is hoping that things progress to the point where being activated for next week's road trip through Colorado and San Francisco becomes a viable option.

"Five, six days or something like that, I would hope so," said Nixon. "I think it's going to depend on how it responds in games."

The gritty left-handed hitter will play five innings in his Triple-A debut. Pawtucket is playing at home against Louisville, and will host Durham in a four-game series that begins on Friday night.

"I think I just have to keep telling myself that I have to be smart when I am out there," Nixon said. "Not so much playing in the outfield, but on the basepaths. Don't do anything that's going to irritate my quad to the point that I can't run anymore."

The Sox have missed Nixon's clutch bat, dependable glove and classy personality.

After spending much of the last couple of months in isolation down in Florida, he is looking forward to re-joining his teammates.

"With the chemistry they have right now, I feel confident that I could fit right in with these guys and keep on going," said Nixon.

Sounds like more hope than fact. I look forward to Nixon's return, and Millar's subsequent relegation to being a bench/platoon player.

Honestly, I would love to see Trot back in 5-6 days, but I don't think we need to rush things with the Interleague schedule in progress. Get him a few pinch hit attempts possibly for now when he is ready to ease him back into it.

I don't know, I'd be thinking that we should try to get him back in time for Colorado, if it's at all possible. That would be a nice place to get back into the swing of things for Trot.
