  1. I have no doubt that Breslow is focused in on Yamamoto. He wants to make a splash . And that is the biggest fish out there. It's just about how much John Henry is willing to spring for.
  2. Yes. It absolutely does. I do not like it one bit , even if it benefits the Red Sox. But it does bring in more money , so it is not going away anytime soon.
  3. Bloom is a smart guy. He has to learn from his mistakes when he gets another opportunity. As it was, he just was not ready for prime time in Boston.
  4. As I've been saying for a while now, big college sports is an incredibly corrupt enterprise. What isn't?
  5. Blue Jays sign German: Talk Sox: " Toronto is desperate , signing a drunken domestic abuser". Red Sox sign German: Talk Sox: " Everyone deserves a second chance. He could be a good # 4 starter " .
  6. Let's be honest. Some esteemed posters just love to be disagreeable. They can go off on tangents all day , but it doesn't change the fact that there is a certain stigma that goes with being the cellar dweller. Maybe not to everybody on here, but certainly true in general. How can that be disputed ? And finishing in last place has nothing to do with " winning rings". To even have a chance at a championship, you have to make the playoffs. A scenario where you finish last ten times and then win it all is improbable at best and borderline nonsensical.
  7. Snell and Montgomery are known commodities. You pretty much know what you are getting. Yamamoto is more of a gamble. He might be better than either of those guys or he could be a colossal bust. Is Breslow a gambler ?
  8. Like it or not, there is a certain embarrassment in finishing dead last.
  9. Making the playoffs, where six out of fifteen teams get in, is not exactly the impossible dream. Especially for a big market team with huge financial resources. Winning the division should always be the goal.
  10. A six team playoff would be better . The top two seeds get a first round bye. Instead, they will expand it to twelve teams, which is way too many. But no matter what happens, there will always be controversy over who was left out. That's life.
  11. I would have to think that Bama is in the playoff. The SEC is definitely the best conference. The SEC champion has to be in the playoffs. You just have to tip your hat to the Crimson Tide and Nick Saban for sustained excellence for a long time. It was impressive how they were able to run out the clock today. Almost invariably, teams in that situation play it safe and wind up punting and depending on their defense to get a stop. Quite often, that does not end well.
  12. Yes. The game has changed.
  13. Maybe it would be better to build your pitching staff with young fireballers , instead of spending so much of your payroll on so called number 1's or 2's , who could just as easily blow out their arms . Spend the big bucks on the great every day stars. Just an idle thought.
  14. JBJ seemed to lose confidence after leaving Boston and went downhill quickly. But I think he was the best defensive centerfielder the Sox have had. So many great catches and a great arm. And he was not all that horrible of a hitter during his run in Boston. Most importantly, he was a winner. An important part of Red Sox division winners and championships. And that really is what it is all about.
  15. Even that Kia Soul costs a lot more these days.
  16. Obviously, Yamamoto is the big fish, even if he is a bit of a mystery. Snell is probably next. The rest can probably be classified as " better than what we have now ". At least we are done with the " In Bloom we ( misplaced) trust". I do think Breslow is trying hard to land the big fish.
  17. Death, taxes and fans getting nervous about a slow start to free agent signings.
  18. Acquiring Cease would be fun for the game thread. Cease and desist. Cease fire. Cease to exist. etc.etc.
  19. They have to beat Georgia. Difficult, but certainly not impossible. That would get them in the playoffs.
  20. I know. But it seems to me that just about everybody but the batboy has gotten some praise on here lately. Why ?
  21. The Sox finished in the cellar, 23 games out. Let's not fall in love with some of these jabronis and want them all back.
  22. Agree. Ranking your starters 1-5 makes little sense. They all have to pitch in turn. Every win counts the same in the standings.
  23. I think it is time to let this go. I am getting repetitive, and I don't like to do that. I do think I am taking a reasonable position that a guy's win and loss total is not the only thing that matters, but it is definitely not meaningless either. That is all I am saying. I am sure that if the Sox sign Yamamoto, it is with the hope that he wins a lot of games.
  24. There are hundreds of different stats out there , with new ones being invented all the time. In the end , the stat that matters is wins and losses. Some of your pitchers better have good records or you are in trouble. I think it is reasonable to expect your top starters to win games. Look back at who are considered the great pitchers in history. They usually have good win/loss records. You can argue this, that and the other , but I don't see how you can say it is meaningless. As I said before , if the ERA is out of whack with the win/loss record , you should take another look because the win/loss could be a fluke. But to just discount the record makes no sense. Why do teams want their best pitchers in the big games ? Because they want to win.
  25. I think if I posted ; Today is Wednesday , you would come back with something like; " Not in Australia " , it's Thursday there. You are the ultimate contrarian.
