Maybe we need a fan revolt. Tell them all to go to hell. Just stay away from the ballpark when they finally do settle on an agreement.

If you have that kind of money , you can make a big profit by investing it. Buying a baseball team might not be the best option . Especially a team that has trouble drawing flies on strawberry festival night. On the other hand , Joe Lunchbox can " invest " his money in a bank savings account and get next to nothing in interest. Money talks.

This whole debacle will result in MLB losing more fans. Maybe not the diehards who post on TalkSox and such , but definitely some of the marginal fans.

Exactly . The fact that NFL teams have only 8 or 9 home games ( mostly on Sundays ) makes it easier to sell out the park. With TV revenue shared and a salary cap in place ,there is a lot of income and spending equality. The NBA has almost no player development . The colleges take care of that for them. It is pretty clear who the top prospects are. With the smaller number of players on a team , it only takes one or two stars to make a team a contender. Of course , the league likes to see powerhouse teams in certain places. A team like the Lakers can have low draft picks , yet still wind up with the superstars , as they have done for years. But it is easier for a bottom feeder to improve than it is in MLB.

Of course. That is why MLB is a different business than Amazon or Wal-Mart. MLB needs competition to thrive. They don't want to put each other out of business. That is what I am saying. And the NBA and NFL have numerous differences from MLB , which makes it easier for them to have a better shot at competitive balance. It is tougher succeed in a small market in MLB.

It's a little too easy to criticize the small market owners. MLB is a very unique business. The teams are competing with each other , but having a competitive balance is important to maintaining fan interest. Without fan support , it all falls apart. There is a vast difference between the lucrative big market franchises and the struggling small market ones. MLB needs to do things to help level the playing field. It is not like that elsewhere in the business world. Walmart was not about to bail out K-Mart. You really can't even fairly compare MLB to the NFL or NBA. There are some important differences between those leagues. It is a tough situation , no matter how you look at it. You can't put all the blame on the small market owners. There is plenty of it to go around.

The luxury tax is just a gimmick in lieu of an actual salary cap. No doubt the owners would prefer a cap. At least most of them would.

It's a tough situation. There can be an enormous difference in revenue between the most lucrative big market areas and some of the more depressed smaller markets. It's not even close to being a level playing field. Maybe the best way to achieve more competitive balance ( if they really want that ) would be a total overhaul of the draft system , both foreign and domestic.

I have probably passed on a few. But it is mostly just good natured tweaking. I do notice that when a poster goes against the grain a bit , there are some on here who will respond with some pretty sarcastic put downs. And , quite frankly , you are sometimes guilty of it yourself.

Dave O'Brien is not very good at baseball play by play. ( He definitely is better when doing football.) You need somebody with a little personality on commentary to offset O'Brien. Eck does not want to work full time. The guys they tried last year left something to be desired. It will be interesting to see what Millar can do with it.

The man does not speak the same language as the average fan. He is doing harm to the game at a time when it is having trouble attracting young fans , while facing ever increasing competition for the entertainment dollar. He is actually hurting the sport that he is supposed to be leading.

Rob Manfred is not a strong commissioner . And he is no baseball man. He is a pencil neck geek. He is just a puppet for the owners. He is not even a good puppet. Knucklehead Smiff was a smarter puppet. This whole thing is disgusting.

I think it is fitting , right and understandable that folks are siding with the players on this lockout. The players are mostly good guys. The owners are a greedy and unlikable bunch. And that includes John Henry. Unfortunately , when this is over , many of these same fans will be urging the owners to save on salaries. " Don't exceed the luxury tax , get somebody cheaper , this guy is overpaid , that guy is not worth it , be like the Rays , save money , keep the budget down , we can't afford this guy or that guy , and certainly not both of them, try to win with a low payroll ," and so forth and so on.

Folks always say that a change of scenery could help a player. But the reverse is also true. For whatever reason, the change in scenery hurt JBJ. I would bet the farm ( if I actually had a farm ) that JBJ will show a significant improvement now that he is back " home." That is not to say that he will become a Tony Gwynn , but expect much improved offense from him this year.

I read that Devers has been working out with Luke Voit. Another indication that the " rivalry" is more with the fans than with the players.

Even the fringe players are making a lot more than the average working stiff.
