  1. OK, so the postseason rotation would look something like this 1. Eovaldi 2. Sale 3. ??? 4. ??? With Houck, E-Rod, Pivetta, and Perez competing for spots 3 & 4. The two pitchers with the best second half earn the two remaining rotation spots for the postseason. In the scenario in which the Red Sox don't trade for an SP, I would like to see them acquire a reliever and upgrade the pen.
  2. You offer Downs and Jimenez (a starting offer) to the Twins for Berrios and see where it goes from there. The Twins will probably want an SP prospect too. It is hard to judge deals like this--we don't know what the Twins are looking for and how much value they might place on Downs and his "down" year. I wonder if a guy like Marcus Wilson together with a lower level lottery ticket would fetch Schoop. Let's say Berrios goes to another team. Who should the Red Sox's second choice be for the starting rotation? Kyle Gibson?
  3. How about trading for Jonathan Schoop and making him the starting 1b? In this scenario, Dalbec either gets traded in a separate deal (if the Tigers don't want him) or sent to AAA. Schoop is a rental. I'm assuming the Tigers are not expecting a top prospect for him. How much confidence would we have in a 1b platoon combination of Cordero and Dalbec? If the Red Sox went ahead with that plan, there is no guarantee that it will be productive and it will take up two spots on the active roster. Trade deadline plan: (1) Trade for Schoop (2) Trade for Berrios
  4. Middlebrooks might turn out to be the perfect comp for Dalbec. Good one.
  5. My guess if the Red Sox face a righty tomorrow: Kike 2b or 1b Verdugo LF Martinez DH Bogaerts SS Devers 3b Renfroe RF Vazquez C Duran CF Arroyo 2b or Dalbec 1b
  6. Maybe your right, maybe the Red Sox plan to do something like this. Perhaps the Red Sox won't trade for a 1b, but instead will move Hernandez to first with Duran's promotion. It's official, folks, if you haven't heard the news, the Red Sox are promoting Duran! With Duran's promotion, it should be interesting to see what they do with Kike, how much does he play CF, 2b, and 1b?
  7. especially if they can find a starting 1b who will produce better than an OPS+ of 79. And that shouldn't be hard to do, either.
  8. he might be right about that, but if JD opts out, that would open up a lot of possibilities for the Red Sox. After all, we would be replacing a DH, and that shouldn't be hard to do. In contrast, replacing Bogaerts would be a huge problem (if he decides to opt out at the end of 2022)......
  9. Kike is not a fixture on this team. He was a free agent, meant to contribute and help the Red Sox but he turns 30 this year, will be 31 at the end of next season. Thus, his defensive metrics should begin to decline somewhat (not uncommon for players in their early 30s). He is a nice player, but Duran is hopefully a future all-star, a fixture on the Red Sox for the next 6-7 seasons. The idea of letting Duran rot away in AAA next year so that stud E.Hernandez can play CF is totally absurd. Hernandez isn't going to be here long, whereas Duran will probably be a core player. I like Arroyo, and I think Arroyo can help be the bridge for Yorke. Arroyo is younger than E.Hernandez.
  10. I would be surprised to see him opt out. He can lock in 20 mil, not a small thing especially for a DH who is putting on some age and will have limited suitors.
  11. LF Verdugo CF Duran RF Renfroe 2b: Hernandez and Arroyo But Hernandez will also play some CF with Duran moving around in order to give some rest to Verdugo and Renfroe. Sure Hernandez will probably be a better defensive CF than Duran next year, but in 2-3 years Duran will be the better defensive player. Hernandez turns 30 in Aug and is signed for only one more year. He isn't a long term player for the Red Sox; in contrast, Duran will be around for a much longer stretch and isn't going to need more developmental time in AAA next season. For me, it seems pretty obvious that Duran is the Red Sox starting CF next year.
  12. It won't be impossible to acquire Berrios. The Twins aren't going to resign him and need to trade him at some point. Building a trade around Downs and Jimenez seems like a reasonable starting point to me, with a SP prospect thrown in. Of course, the Twins may get a better offer, but building an offer around Downs and Jimenez isn't outrageous. Berrios isn't exactly the second coming of Pedro Martinez. As far as Duran goes, the Twins can't expect the Red Sox to trade Duran while acquiring Berrios. The whole point of trading for Berrios is to be better over the next 1.2 of two baseball seasons, but Duran is also in the Red Sox's immediate plans (he will be starting next year). A player like Jimenez makes much more sense, since he isn't in the Red Sox's immediate plans. If the Twins demand Duran, Bloom turns them down. It doesn't make sense for the Red Sox to fill one area of weakness (starting pitching) while creating another (next year's starting CF).
  13. Thinking outside the box: the Red Sox don't trade for a starting pitcher. Instead, the Red Sox would stretch out G.Whitlock and he would enter the rotation. The playoff rotation would look like this: Sale Eovaldi Whitlock Pivetta The trade deadline plan could be: don't trade for a starter, stretch out Whitlock, trade for a relief arm and a starting 1b. With the exception of Jose Berrios, the other trade market starting pitchers are far from ideal. I even have my doubts about Kyle Gibson. Do the Red Sox want to count on Danny Duffy in a must-win playoff game? Clearly, trading for Jose Berrios would be the best move, but he will also cost a ton in prospects and other teams will attempt to acquire him as well. If the Red Sox can't work out a Berrios deal, would moving Whitlock to the rotation be the next best alternative?
  14. I wouldn't extend JD Martinez. If he opts out, the Red Sox will have plenty of options to replace him with a younger player: Semien (not a DH, but you could rotate infielders to give everyone rest), Bryant, Schwarber. If those players don't interest you, the Red Sox could always bring back Pablo Sandoval.
  15. I love the fact that Mayer hits lefthanded and has arguably the best hit tool of anyone in the draft. The Red Sox can groom him early on to hit the ball the other way and when Mayer eventually gets to Boston, he will pepper the Green Monster with doubles, kind of like how my man Wade Boggs used to. Lefthanded batters and the Green Monster--it doesn't get any better than that.
  16. I thought the Pirates did a nice job in this draft, not only did they fill their biggest farm system need by taking Davis, but they drafted some stud prospects beyond the first round. https://triblive.com/sports/pirates-take-left-handed-prep-pitcher-anthony-solometo-with-first-pick-of-2nd-round/ It'll be interesting to see if the Pirates do something similar in next year's draft or not. At this point, the Pirates are slated to have the third pick in next year's draft.
  17. Fabien was a great pick--it can be so difficult to find quality centerfielders and it sounds like his defense is really good. He will need to improve the hit tool somewhat, but if he accomplishes that he could have a long and successful major league career. Hypothetical: let's say the Tigers take Mayer, who do the Red Sox take at 4? I wonder what the answer is. We can only speculate, but there are people in the Red Sox front office who know. I wish they would tell us, but organizations rarely speak on such things. Was the Jack Leiter story total ********? The story that said Jack, Al, and the agent were trying to get Leiter to fall to the Red Sox? I'm starting to think the entire story was made-up media ********. Leiter looked pretty happy after being selected by the Rangers and he celebrated at home with friends and family if you check out his twitter page.
  18. There is a chance that the Red Sox roll the dice with Dalbec and Cordero at 1b this year and use their trade chips to upgrade the rotation with a Kyle Gibson or a Jose Berrios. I would be pretty happy with that kind of rotation upgrade even if we wake up on Aug 1 without a new first baseman.
  19. That's what it feels like--he wants to stay here, stay in the area. Maybe he has kids or something and doesn't want to uproot them. He could also get hurt over the next few months, get nothing in free agency, and made a calculated decision in that regard.
  20. You shouldn't feel grumpy this morning--we just drafted Marcelo Mayer. I feel more alive this morning than ever before!
  21. When you're trying to win a championship you can't have a starting 1b hit like this, his OPS+ is 79. The amazing thing about Dalbec is his HR total, he has 10 HR so far and is on pace to hit 20 HR. And this is a guy who is supposed to be a HR hitter. Obviously, Dalbec's hit tool is so poor that it is affecting his lousy HR output.
  22. No. I like his Duran's speed & power combination too much, and he is too close to the majors.
  23. I try not to get caught up in rankings, it is geeky and frivolous, the kind of thing that a dumb ass like Chris Hatfield spends his life thinking about, but there is no way that Casas should be ranked in front of Mayer IMO. "I know Marcelo Mayer, I've talked to Marcelo Mayer, I've seen Marcelo Mayer play, and Casas is no Marcelo Mayer."
  24. Amazing. The night started off kind of depressing, with the Pirates taking Davis and the Rangers taking Leiter. At that point, I was certain the Tigers would take Mayer and that the worst case scenario would play out for the Red Sox with Davis, Leiter, and Mayer off the board. But then the Tigers took Jobe! YES! I think everyone knew that the Red Sox would follow up by taking Mayer. It is pretty incredible to think that the Red Sox ended up with the top prep SS and perhaps the best talent in the draft. I'm trying to figure out how this happened. It actually make sense: (1) the Pirates wanted a catcher and Davis will sign for under slot; (2) the Rangers have middle infielders throughout their system but no pitching and Leiter is great; (3) the Tigers fell for the seductive charm of a high school pitcher that blinded them to the reality of a high risk gamble.
