  1. My takeaway from the all star game didn't involve our players, but involved the various starting pitchers from both leagues. Despite the incredible lineups they faced, these guys were able to handle the hitters. They were better than any of our starters and if we faced them, they could shut us down. Our two that currently can do a decent are E-Rod and Price. If we do something creative with pitching this year, it won't come cheaply and we had better get resources that remain with us through 2020.
  2. Stroman and Giles to us and we give up Darwizon Hernandez, Mike Shawaryn, Michael Chavis or Andrew Bennintendi and we throw in Rusney Castillo and eat his remaqining salary. They would eat some of Stroman and Giles salaries to keep us under the second tier of the competitive balance tax. They get a very good young major leaguer, a decent fill in ooutfielder, two good pitching prospects and we get what we need at a price we could live with.
  3. My thinking has been as a minimalist for some time now. It doesn't appear our starters are good enough to deliver us with a chance of going far, even if we get a wild card. We shall soon see, with games against good teams and rivals coming up. Going after a rental and giving away what remains of our best prospects or even a ML player under those circumstances makes no sense. If we could get a starter that would help us in 2020, then I would be interested. In the case of the pen, I am all for spending up to the limit to get some help. We may soon be looking at reforming the team for 2020 and beyond. I can see letting go of weak players and trying to improve at all postions.
  4. His health has been the main question mark. We have the time now to evaluate him through the rest of 2019.
  5. If we are lucky, Chavis will be improved an fill 1st base in 2020 and perhaps we will be very lucky and see Marco step up at 2nd. Our main issue is pitching and Porcello is durable but perhaps not the guy we need in the era of the juiced ball. It is hard to see any of our current minor league pitchers filling the starting pitching void and Eovaldi is far from showing he can regain his mojo. With Sale not stepping up, we are going to need at least two starters, so the question will be, can we get a guy as good as Porcello for the money? The size and length of the contract will matter. I am leaning toward replacing him.
  6. Yes, I remember your support for him and it is good to have a 2nd base prospect that may cover the real need we have at that position. He has made a good start, yet it is wise to see how he does over a longer period. Not having to go out to fill that position for 2020 would allow us more resources for our main need, which is pitching.
  7. We got a win, but my heart was in my mouth watching Workman go about it.
  8. Why does it have to be this scary. Closer who comes in and walks the leadoff batter and puts the winning run at the plate, then walks him too. Lucky to get out of it tonight.
  9. What the heck does he think he is doing? Now all it takes is a hit to tie.
  10. Boy, was I wrong about not scoring enough. God bless America and Chavis. We put 9 players up that inning. Technically to bat around you have to get the first hitter back at the plate but it was impressive. Walks and singles are good but Chavis put the icing on the cake. We are all jaded by the performance of our BP. Cross your fingers.
  11. Any moves made should be concentrated on 2020. Short term rental players should not be in the cards this year. Big changes needed in the pitching staff including probably 3 starters replacing at least 2 of ours. Also significant changes to the BP. Replacement of half would be in order. Changes needed in field players. Second base, backup catcher, questionable outfield now may need some changes. Players like Moreland, Pearce and Nunez should be gone with a more experienced Chavis kept as a low cost alternative. Bogey, Devers should be locks. Probably Holt. Might as well get hold of the budget. All the money spent is not getting results.
  12. I don't see where our runs will come from. The Blue Jays may score another 3 or 4 while we will be lucky to get to 3.
  13. Do you expect the sox to score more than 6 runs?
  14. Hope they aren't drinking beer in the dugout again!
  15. I also think we should keep e-rod, but wouldn't it be best if they could cure his tendency to nibble. I think he went to 111 pitches last time out and we still had to have relief pitches for 3 innings. Thats his MO, 3 and 2 on most batters. Why does he do that?
  16. Half the lineup doesn't hit well and we put up a lousy starting effort vitually every other game. Add to that the BP will blow every other save opportunity. Death by a thousand cuts is a good description.
  17. I understand Hembree will be back. Don't know if he will be in Toronto tonight though..
  18. Yesw, and against a right hand pitcher. Something is going on, either an injury or the club senses he is getting deeper into a slump.
  19. I know it is a long time ago, but Dick Radatz has a few great years for Boston in the early 60's. He was virtually unhittable until his arm started giving him issues. His signature pitch was a fastball that appeared to rise and move into right handed hitters. Great reliever and then gone although the Sox may have got him back for a year after he became ordinary.
  20. I wonder if the team would perk up when certain players get traded. It's not just poor performance but also the attitude a player has. If he is negative, the attitude can spread to other players. Right now Beni appears to be down due to his difficulties getting hits for instance.
  21. I know your a Yankee fan and it is your year. You also make sense on this. We stood pat this year, even though there were some weak spots. We knew second base was unlikely to be covered, we also knew that our relief pitching was worse this year. Our backup catcher was a poor hitter and our center fielder was erratic. It was difficult to correct this problems without exceeding the second tier of the competitive balance tax, so for whatever reason, we did nothing to correct those issues. So this season we suffered some injuries to valued players (all teams do) and others have been off of last years strong showings. We have also had a few guys step it up. Bottom line is we are playing uninspired ball, with aging starters who in general are not pitching well and not eating innings and our BP has been overused and shows it. We do need to make major moves this year and hope to improve the team enough for the 2020 season. Most of the fans have a good idea of the changes necessary and I hhope DD has the savy the support necessary to make moves to strengthen us for 2020.
  22. I postulated having a plan B available. Hold on to the best assets, and we know who they are. Try to trade the marginal guys. Some may be in contracts and are marginal, but we probably can't trade so we hang onto as baggage. DFA players that just don't help the club at all and can't be traded. Bring up the best prospects and let them show if they are ready. Don't trade away the best low cost prospects. Are we at that point yet? It's looking more and more like it for these reasons. 1. Weak starting pitching 2. Awful relief pitching 3. Too many field players who don't or can't hit consistently 4. The general idea of resting key players so that we seldom put the total best on the field together. (I'm old school, where players weren't as coddled)
  23. So, you would rather have Leon catching? Of course you give up one of our best hitters when you do that. Perhaps Sale is just not performing as well this year.
  24. I'll have to look at Carmago, but it sounds like he is the kind of player we should be looking at. It admittedly results in a hole in the outfield so not a slam dunk.
  25. I had earliier suggested that Eovaldi should have gotten his arm surgery done in the off season but others said I was off base so I went back and read the available material. It appears I was incorrect, as his Dr. Ahmad cleared him in November with an examination and an MRI. No problems at that point. It wasn't until throwing 6 innings against the Yankees that he came away unable to straighten his arm and with pain. At that time, he throught 2 weeks after the surgery he could resume activities and be back in a short time. Its now been 10 weeks, presumably because he also strained an arm muscle. He is throwing again, but his game is the high velocity fastball with movement. You have to wonder whether he can remain sound for long when he returns. I hope so but fireballers often go on the IL.
