A trade of Price and Betts to the Dodgers appears to be probable and would indeed allow for a reset in 2020. Will everyone on the board agree with that move? No! Is it likely to enhance our chances of moving forward in 2021? Yes, so I am for it. Maybe we can get Betts back in 2021.

That is very likely one of the scenarios being discussed in the Sox front office. Reset, hold onto the best young core players and make a major effort starting in 2021. One very lean year might also get us a very good draft position.

The talk is rachetting up of a Betts/Price move involving the Dodgers. That would define 2020 as a reset year but make 2021 a year to move forward. Something is likely to happen soon as both clubs have incentives to make it happen soon.

Travis was DFA'd but it was a matter of letting go of someone and his number came up. We have other options at his position (assuming 1st base with some outfield). He as been a marginal player and hasn't shown a great deal of improvement so the choice made s ome sense.

Maybe we will see a deal (not just the one you mention) before the end of the year so we can shift into thinking about filling CF, BU Catcher and the like. I do think JBJ is traded, but not necessarily tied into the Price move.

I recently read a blog which was Not as optimistic about value (https://blogs.fangraphs.com/david-prices-trade-value/). Twenty mil x 3 looks like much more than we can expect and to get him traded, we might well have to add a ML player who is being paid less than his current worth. Beni was mentioned. I think Bloom is looking for his best offer. I hope your concept is correct but it doesn't line up with what I am reading.

You're just pointing out that Bloom has been given a difficult job to do. To reset, he will have to trade quality assets, probably for lower quality replacements. Making these moves will obviously have consequences. Some people are clamoring for him to move quickly and then will probably complain when he does what is necessary. Whether it is Price, Eovaldi, Betts, JDM and/or JBJ, clearly some assets will go. It's up to Bloom to get the best value available for those assets while resetting. 2021 will then likely allow for more expenditures and reforming the team.

The Dodgers might well devise a trade in which we would gain a usefull player while also gaining some salary benefit as well. Depends on how serious they are. prospects and us paying down part of Price's salary is another trade avenue. Bloom has to look for good opportunites to lose salary commitments without totally giving away a cmmitment to competitiveness.

Many other Sox fans have been advocating the 2020 reset for many months now. My own approach has been to reset while maintaining as much of a competitive balance as possible while ridding the team of its major encumberences but building upon players who can help them in 2021 and beyond. The fans and remaining good players deserve a management who at least tries to remain somewhat competitive while making moves that will bear fruit in future years. That includes getting good looks at current farm players who some here prefer to belittle.

I don't disagree with you when you make a good point, just to be disagreeable to a Yankee fan, but the signing of Cole for $36 mil for the next 9 years seems like an incredible risk to me. How many pitchers hang around to pitch that many seasons? If he is damaged goods in 3 years, the Yankees will have to carry a competitive balance tax hit for years to come. Its hard to believe Yankee fandom is unconcerned about such a high risk. If the Sox had enough to sign him, I would have been against the length of contract and there are others here to express similar concerns.

The Yankees made a 9 year $324 Mil contract for one player. I would say that was a huge risk for them. Will he stay healthy and for how long. I can imagine 7 years of an unproductive $36 mil weight on their team. Position players are less of a risk, but even then the long term contracts foor those players have significant risk and should be entered upon with the realization they could backfire.

I would add Chatham to the 2nd base/utility side as he can play short as well. I wonder about catcher and whether we might do better. -
I for one will be satisfied if I perc3eive Bloom is making moves that will improve the team continuously and on a long term basis. Undoing the poor Dombrowski decisions will take time and there will be some pain felt to do it.

I think resetting this year makes better sense since the pitching rotation is coming off injuries and will probably not be solid enough to make us a coontender. Resetting this year then allows us to compete for Mookie and/or other quality players in 2021.

The moves you want to make should keep in mind the current reality of the situation. My thinking is that we might be somewhat competitive with the current team but the starting pitching is not and will not be good enough to give us a chance of winning it all. Because of this I believe Bloom should structure any trades and or acquisitions such that we get more competitive in 2021 and beyond. If we can unload big contracts and put us under the Tax threshold then it would enhance of drafting capabilities. We should definitely look at acquiring prospects when we trade some of our big contracts. If the likelihood of keeping Betts is slim, then he might be a candidate to move at the trade deadline. A club perceiving themselves as one step away from WS quality might be willing to invest prospects for him at that time. I have faith that Bloom is smart enough and experience enough to follow a plan and return the club to the top competitive bracket, but it might take 2 or 3 years.

Probably many long term fans look at the roster in different ways than your slant, but if we wait until the winter meetings are over, some of the question marks may well be answered. My take on the list is that Pedroia is likely a no show for another year. I would think Travis, Lin, Hembree, Velazquez, Brewer and one of Eovaldi or Price will be moved in a larger trade. I would keep Chatham as our next utility player. Can't see how we keep Bradley unless Betts and a starter go.

I read JBJ has been tendered a contract. The trade possibilities are likely. Leon has been traded to Cleveland.

The trade simulator says he is worth +$50M, so pay him $35M for 9 to 10 Years? So you want to pay 1/6th of the 40 man roster payroll to one player and accept that commitment to a 10 year period? Not for me and that doesn't mean I don't value Mookie as a player.

A $240MM team may well have to beat a $230 MM team to win the championship. Alas, its a lot to ask for a team to win the division. Bad luck, injuries, etc. all can make for tough sledding. I would like to team to reset this year, move in the right direction and at least be somewhat competitive. Its a lot to ask but with Bloom I believe we have a chance of doing just that. I am nt worried as some on the site are that Bloom hasn't made big moves as yet. He has been given a complex job and I would rather see him make one or two good deals than a flurry of poor deals. We have seen too much of them in the past.

Like many of the posters and fans here, I think I know the playbook for 2020 and feel certain that Bloom knows it, only better than we. Clearly he can trade away or otherwise get rid of some of our lower price contracts, but in reality he does have to shoot for a higher cost player. That list is fairly small and hopefully he finds a way to rid us of at least one of our higher risk and high cost starting pitchers. Possibly he has to add someone we would rather keep to make that happen. My approach is to let Bloom do his job and comment when his moves are announced.

Its not a parable its one of Aesop's fables. Lets not ask for rash moves from Mr. Bloom but well considered moves that advance the cause.
