  1. Most things seem trivial compared to COVID-19. With a large family and the numbers being posted, it is only a matter of time until this virus strikes within the family. Probably the same for most of us. In our case, my neices son-in-law is now in ICU on a ventilator and a new med fighting for his life. He is young and strong but still felled by this cursed disease. They have two fairly young children. We are praying for his recovery. Everyone -Stay safe.
  2. It has sounded like a few players may have been going in and looking at replay technology to try to understand the signs being used. That information was then made available to runners who reached second. Those players could then relay the information to the batter. If this is what happened, it is only slightly different than having a really smart sign stealer at 2nd base without the technology. I'd hazard a guess that all teams were doing some of that. Manfred's findings should ask the question of whether similar situations occurred throughout baseball before deciding on penalties. What Houston did went way beyond what I described above.
  3. Clearly the athletes (wealthy) get preference over those who are not wealthy. Hard to judge whether it impacts life and death care scenarios but it certainly is grounds for bad press.
  4. Manfred indicates the investigation is completed and only waiting on him to complete the written report. He is saying the many COVID-19 related issues have delayed him in that regard, but did say the report will be out before the season begins, whenever that is. With reported cases in the US rising at an accelerating rate, it is hard to believe the season could start until the end of May, and even that is optimistic.
  5. I leave Florida in a month and even if here, one spring training game is enough. $50 a seat tickets to see a couple of starters for 3 or 4 innings seems like a bad deal.
  6. I don't think many want to put a robot behind the plate. I recommend techology assistance for the umpire, who still is behind the plate. From a fan's POV, it still looks the same.
  7. What a noxious thing to do. People are dying for lack of space and equiment in NY hospitals. A month or two delay until we get over the hump makes more sense.
  8. Are you older than me? I'm 79 and have seen a lot of the Sox and am a fan in both good and bad times, as I hope everyone here is. Hang in there, we need to add perspective.
  9. By better or worse, your saying in comparison to the K-zone, which most of us believe is accurate. Why not then use to k-zone to inform the umpire so he/she can get the call correct every time. That eliminates batters arguing the calls (often rightly so). I do believe it will come in the near future.
  10. I prefer technology to incompetence
  11. I agree with this point of view. I would hate to tell a patient, "sorry the ventilator is not available, you have to wait while we do Tommy John surgery on someone". Elective surgery needs to wait, even though it may inconvenience a sports team.
  12. I think of it as technology assisted umpires. Still have the ump but the techology relays the ball/strike call except for the swing and foul tip. We get consistent calls instead of watching 3rd strikes called balls and pitches 2 inches outside called strikes. The techology is available. Tiime to use it.
  13. Elective surgery is frowned on at this time. Stay out of the hospital until COVID-19 is under control. May be a month or even more but its a wait that should be taken.
  14. Having Sale for 61 innings/year while getting Ace Starter pay is not a good deal, just better than not getting anything. I hope for the best but don't expect him to be the same guy who was great for us.
  15. A number of us, including Kimmi, have questioned the sense of giving long term contracts to players over 30. That especially applies to pitchers who have a lot of mileage on them and the moreso when they have exhibited soreness in their arms and shoulders. Under DD, we went ahead with contracts of that type and it is probably what got him fired. I doubt if Bloom will make similar moves, but in the meantime, we will have to work through what is on the books. Sale may be able to come back from this in a year but he will be 32 and his arm will be a question mark. We will have the $48 mil from Price, whats left of Eovaldi and the remainder of the $145 mil from Sale when he gets back. Not an enviable situation.
  16. I noticed a mention of 2017 in the article. Wasn't that already dealt with over the issue of Apple Watches? I thought the cheating issues would focus on 2018 and what was done at that time, if anything.
  17. Warm weather can allow us to be out of doors and away from crowds, so in a way it could help.
  18. Just another case of the Sox providing a long term contract that hasn't turned out good for the team. Kimmi often cautions against it and she is correct, especially with pitchers and even more so ones who have accumulated a lot of innings, however successful. Lets hope that Bloom doesn't fall into that trap. We are paying the Price for those moves and now we are in a fire Sale situation.
  19. My mother was a girl when the Spanish influenza hit. She cared for her mother and aunt which pulled them through. So many who didn't have care givers passed away. It was much worse than COVID-19. Millions died worldwide. What I am hearing from so many people is panic. I think we are doing the right thing by limiting crowds and that should continue until at least testing catches up. We will thhen begin to see if the impact of separating people and get some idea of when we can start to return to more normalcy and perhaps a baseball season. My softball season was cancelled but we still get together once in a while to hit and shag balls. We can keep our distance there and it would be worse to sit at home and look at the walls.
  20. I am from the silent generation, born between the two world wars. Alll that makes me is old. But I still am an avid Sox fan. Funny that all coverage of the Sox seems to have stopped.
  21. You seem to be lined up on the gloomy side of things. Many of the things you complain of us not doing are now being done with more steps considered. This is a process within our large country and it is a daunting challenge. From what I have heard and read, cases of the virus will be expressed throughtout the population and those people will be treated and hopefully efforts to reduce the spread will start to bear fruit. I expect to see this process take place over at least a month with the ability to project the life cycle to occur by the end of May. Thats a pretty scary proposition but not nearly as bad as the worst case scenarios being fostered on us by the fear mongers. Its a old story, never let a good crisis go to waste.
  22. We have not as yet implemented large scale testing of individuals so do not as yet know how many cases are out there nor how it is spreading. The steps taken to quarantine those known to have tested posiitive and those in direct contact with people who have tested positive should help but the unknown cases remain and represent a possibility of further increasing spread. I would think it will be highly unlikely that a good handle will be developed on the situation for at least a month and then authorities will be reticent to allow large gatherings to resume until cases are demonstrably dropping sdignificantly. I would guess a resumption in early June would be realistic.
  23. More interesting is how will the abbreviated season impact calculation of the competitve tax threshold. Will teams be expected to pay full salaries if the revenues are significantly reduced? In the period of revenue sharing is there risk sharing as well with the owners and players?
  24. My over 70's softball league continues to play regular games but doesn't shake hands afterward now. I was at Cool-T park for the Sox game Monday to a nearly full stadium and went to a play last night with a decent crowd. Things are pretty normal where we are in Florida except for my stock holdings. They, along with those of others have taken a serious hit.
  25. All kidding aside, if they don't have anything on the Sox, they should just say so and get it over with. The commissioner is doing another disservice to the league by dragging it out. The League will be criticized if they go ahead with the season under the circumstances. Its difficult, because no one can say when the COVID-19 virus will pass by. It could go until mid summer or later so maybe the Sox will ride out the expected down season and get back in 2021 with the league starting back up.
