  1. The Sox risk assessment on Price, a pitcher who has been remarkably durable but has had years of high pitch count, was we should go in big and provide a 7 year huge financial contract. Frankly. whoever is doing the risk assessment for the Sox must lack the one most needed trait and that is common sense. I hope for the best here but see it as only a matter of time before this contract is added to those recent mind bogglers the Sox have entered into.
  2. Ominous ans a reminder why it is risky to sign pitchers who have a lot of mileage to long term deals.
  3. Especially true for the table setters. Guys who can get on base with walks and singles and have the speed to put pressure on the pitcher are really valuable. Bunting can force the defense out of an extreme shift so raises the batters chances for that reason as well. The American league has gotten away from small ball but that doesn't mean it couldn't stage a comeback. It certainly adds to the games excitement. JF doesn't impress me as a guy who favors small ball though.
  4. What is going on with Hanley's sore shoulder. Hope that isn't a harbinger of something serious.
  5. I too think it is Leon and Vazquez to start the season but think that Leon might wear down as he did last year. At that point or maybe earlier, Swihart needs to be ready to step in.
  6. Pamdamonium bedlam, choas, mayhem, uproar. That is what will happen if Panda doesn't make the 25 man roster. Many of us believed he had to make the team and was not a lock.
  7. The conventional 25 man roster includes: 5 SP 7 RP 2 Catchers 6 IF 5 OF Our DH is an IF so he would count against those 6 so who do we have expected? Starting IF would be Moreland, Pedroia, Bogaerts and Sandoval with Rameriz counting against the IF. Who is the 6th? Hernandez, Rutledge or Marrero? Starting OF would we Betts, JBJ amd Beni leaving room for 2 (Holt and Swihart? or Seisky) Catchers Leone, Vazquez Starting 5 P Porcello, Price, Sale, ( 2 of Pomeranz, Wright, Rodreguez) with presumably one to the BP BP Consisting of 6 plus one from above. Kelly, Thornburg, Ross, Henbree, Kimbrel, (Barnes or Abad) assuming Smith starts season on IR. That leaves Workman and Scott in limbo. Anyone clarify where we are at this point? Still possible that injuries will determine a position or two.
  8. With his swing he will square up a mistake and hit it out from time to time. If he gets a lot of at bats this year, and we are hoping for that, I wouldn't be surprised if he exceeds 15 Hrs.
  9. From what I have read, Beni has a chance of batting in the #2 slot based on the fact that he is the only lefty currently thought of for the top 5 spots. He has the speed and the swing to be effective. It is a push though to put a rookie into such a pressure spot.
  10. Why is it that I can't feel any confidence in statements like yours/
  11. Overdue change. It will have a minor impact on the length of games but it indicates a willingness to change.
  12. 185 is not particularly bulky. I see it as a part of maturing and getting stronger. By contrast, the latest picture of Pablo shows he is still carrying considerable weight. Hope he can handle it as he has always played with a stocky build.
  13. Yes, Sandoval is coming off an injury and will turn 31 in August. With essentially 2 years out of the majors, I wouldn't expect him to come in and make an impact immediately. He is 5'11" (same height as Leon)and to have any reasonable range at 3rd, I would think he would have needed to get into the 210 pound range. I expect he had ballooned up to 265 pounds or more at his heaviest so even losing 40 pounds might not be enough. We shall see in spring training.
  14. The fact that he has gained 10 pounds by working on his body bodes well for additional power. He has a beautiful swing and could wind up with 15 home runs or more this season. The kid is doing all the right things so far.
  15. Very interesting take Moon. Having him available is like an insurance policy. Hope you don't need to use him but nice to have if the need arises.
  16. I'd be interested to hear what Jackie Bradley will do in spring training. His in field play was fine last year but his hitting deteriorated as the season wore on. I speculated at the time that his swing had lengthened and gotten more uppercut in nature. That might be good for power, but not so good for contact. I wonder if those watching him in spring training or hearing from his own personal stories whether he is taking steps to improve his contact. Clearly the hitting coaches would be trying to help in that regard. He is one of our more important players and to have him close to his early season 2016 form would be a huge benefit for the 2017 Sox.
  17. I'm 6'1' and 235# Whereas Leon is the same weight but 2 inches shorter. I think he is at least 20 # over his reasonable playing weight. It has to impact his speed and it is hard to say about durability. I know Molina has been quite heavy as well and managed it but I would like to see Leon take the Panda challenge and get into better playing shape.
  18. Last year Abad looked like he had good stuff but then couldn't help us. They kept him despite his poor results because they could see the potential he has. Hard to get a lefty reliever that can get it done so the FO will give him another try. He may turn out to be a real positive for us in the BP. Think positive, it is Springtime in Florida.
  19. Depends when in the year the replacements are needed. Travis is likely to be ready fairly early in the year (assuming HR is DH). If so, he is probably the one when available. I am a fan of Hernandez and think he could handle second and possibly short. Why have Rutledge on the team if he is not the short term replacement for 3rd? Holt has shown he could handle 3rd.
  20. I still wonder if a guy as stocky and slow as Leon is can last a full season of regular catching duties. His hitting is only one of the questions but if he can hit, he has the best chance of being the starting catcher.
  21. The report today indicates both Pomeranz and Wright reported to camp with physical problems. Ugh1
  22. Nice attempt to divert the conversation away from Statists vs anti-Statists, however there seems to be a need to continue with that as seen in some of the follow-on entries. I will be happy when spring training finally gives us more beneficial things to discuss.
  23. I keep thinking of Leon with his 5'11", 235 # frame and how unlikely he can last a season with his weight leading to a breakdown or at least exhaustion. Perhaps the Sox believe Sandy can play regularly at that weight, but I doubt it.
  24. Sounds like you got that from Ecclesiastes 3. A time for every purpose under heaven. To me the move represented taking a major risk in Sale. He is very talented but may prove fragile. Is the risk worth the amount of resources it took. That remains to be seen but the FO decided to go that way and that is what we will see over the next season. Talent is great to have, but also needed is cohesiveness and that is developed by having a manager who can get the best out of his club. I hope we have that going forward. Francona was that, is Farrell?
  25. It brought back a flood of memories for me personally and a new understanding of why things were happening the way they were. Now I see Lucchino leaving as a good thing, while before I had no opinion on him.
