  1. That's why they should be done in the off season.
  2. What more can he do to make the team? The righty lefty argument only goes so far. . I would love to see us keep him and was on his side last year as well. He has a great swing and would be a super utility infielder, probably superior to Holt. Think of trading away pieces and keeping him. We have Selsky and Swihart for 2nd backup outfielders or could keep Travis, but that leaves us thin in the outfield.
  3. So why not make the effort to get away from the high maintenance swing mechanics. The time to do that was the off season. When he talked of trying harder, there was no mention of altering the swing.
  4. Having hitters who can also run the bases well up early in the order may also put pressure on the pitcher. We have two ot those in Betts and Beni. I'd like to see both of them up in the 1 through 4 slotss and expect that to be the case.
  5. Other than him saying he was going to try harder to be more consistent, he added nothing about what trying harder meant. My view is that he needs to realize what works and what doesn't. He is surrounded to coaches and advanced technology to zero in on what works best for him. My hope is that he alters his approach if needs be to be the hitter the hot stretches show that he could be. The rest of his game is excellent.
  6. There are two older tradable guys on the Sox roster in Holt and Rutledge and 4 guys underneath that could fill those spots and offer a low cost and perhaps better capability. Hernandez looks like an up and comer with a good left handed bat and the ability to play 3rd, short and second. Travis looks like a right handed power bat with good contact who right now can play 1st but might expand his capability soon. Then there are Swihart a switch hitter with flexible positioning and Selsky, possibly a good quality right handed bat with reasonable ability in the outfield. To me, this situation screams of looking at possible trades to: 1) Improve our bench 2) Lower the salary of our roster 3) Get some trade value out of our aging players
  7. I agree with your opening day lineup. If Sandoval is hitting well he has a chance of moving up in the lineup which Leon will have something to prove to stay in the lineup. Interesting story on Bradley saying he plans to strike out less and hit the ball hard (he doesn't care about to which field) which is all well and good, but it the story on him doesn't say how he intends to do that (shorten his swing, etc.) I hope he can find consistency.
  8. Yes, you, Moon and myself have argued that Hernandez looks like a good alternative in the infield and has a nice stroke at the plate. Hope they give the kid serious consideration on the 25 man roster. He and Travis look like they could help the club now.
  9. So, could he possibly make the 25 man roster?
  10. An attitude that suggests there wasn't an option to going 7 years for Price. We let Lester go and could have had him for half the money at 5 years. Perhaps we could have gotten two good pitchers both on shorter contracts and that would have reduced the risk and perhaps increased the upside over the period of the contract. As it is, we got a very good pitcher who is at high risk of not fulfilling the full term of the contract. To me the risk assessment should take those things into account.
  11. So far the news is good on the Price front but it does show that the whole signing is just a sore arm away from turning into a disaster. I am not a fan of long term high Priced contracts for pitchers. Too much can go wrong.
  12. Lets hope he can stay away from the pasta and return to his salad days.
  13. Unless he bats 3rd.
  14. The Sox risk assessment on Price, a pitcher who has been remarkably durable but has had years of high pitch count, was we should go in big and provide a 7 year huge financial contract. Frankly. whoever is doing the risk assessment for the Sox must lack the one most needed trait and that is common sense. I hope for the best here but see it as only a matter of time before this contract is added to those recent mind bogglers the Sox have entered into.
  15. Ominous ans a reminder why it is risky to sign pitchers who have a lot of mileage to long term deals.
  16. Especially true for the table setters. Guys who can get on base with walks and singles and have the speed to put pressure on the pitcher are really valuable. Bunting can force the defense out of an extreme shift so raises the batters chances for that reason as well. The American league has gotten away from small ball but that doesn't mean it couldn't stage a comeback. It certainly adds to the games excitement. JF doesn't impress me as a guy who favors small ball though.
  17. What is going on with Hanley's sore shoulder. Hope that isn't a harbinger of something serious.
  18. I too think it is Leon and Vazquez to start the season but think that Leon might wear down as he did last year. At that point or maybe earlier, Swihart needs to be ready to step in.
  19. Pamdamonium bedlam, choas, mayhem, uproar. That is what will happen if Panda doesn't make the 25 man roster. Many of us believed he had to make the team and was not a lock.
  20. The conventional 25 man roster includes: 5 SP 7 RP 2 Catchers 6 IF 5 OF Our DH is an IF so he would count against those 6 so who do we have expected? Starting IF would be Moreland, Pedroia, Bogaerts and Sandoval with Rameriz counting against the IF. Who is the 6th? Hernandez, Rutledge or Marrero? Starting OF would we Betts, JBJ amd Beni leaving room for 2 (Holt and Swihart? or Seisky) Catchers Leone, Vazquez Starting 5 P Porcello, Price, Sale, ( 2 of Pomeranz, Wright, Rodreguez) with presumably one to the BP BP Consisting of 6 plus one from above. Kelly, Thornburg, Ross, Henbree, Kimbrel, (Barnes or Abad) assuming Smith starts season on IR. That leaves Workman and Scott in limbo. Anyone clarify where we are at this point? Still possible that injuries will determine a position or two.
  21. With his swing he will square up a mistake and hit it out from time to time. If he gets a lot of at bats this year, and we are hoping for that, I wouldn't be surprised if he exceeds 15 Hrs.
  22. From what I have read, Beni has a chance of batting in the #2 slot based on the fact that he is the only lefty currently thought of for the top 5 spots. He has the speed and the swing to be effective. It is a push though to put a rookie into such a pressure spot.
  23. Why is it that I can't feel any confidence in statements like yours/
  24. Overdue change. It will have a minor impact on the length of games but it indicates a willingness to change.
  25. 185 is not particularly bulky. I see it as a part of maturing and getting stronger. By contrast, the latest picture of Pablo shows he is still carrying considerable weight. Hope he can handle it as he has always played with a stocky build.
