  1. The counter argument we have been hearing from some of the guru posters is that with such a strong lineup up front, we can afford to have a good fielding JBJ and an excellent defensive catcher hitting in the range of 150 with low OPS's. That puts a lot of pressure on our better hitters and presumes they too won't be in slumps for periods as Beni seems to be in now. We also find us carrying two other underperformers. Tough to be the better teams with a comprised offensive team.
  2. The Sox are not deep offensively, having to put 4 guys out there hitting below 200. While it looked to some they were heating up against the Blue Jay pitching, the Astros may disabuse us of that conclusion. What small amount of their play in Houston I had watched tonight leads me to believe they are tired and uninspired tonight.
  3. At least Chavis made hard contact.
  4. Sales slider is not biting as much as in his last game, but the defense looks lackluster or as others have typified it, pathetic. I also wonder about our lineup stacking up against the Astros. We have 4 bottom of the order hitters with BAs below 200. These 4 looked better against Toronto but Astros pitching may reveal that they haven't turned any corner just yet.
  5. I wouldn't characterize the budget sensitivity as self imposed. MLB have serious penalties associated with going over and staying over the competitive balance tax limit. We just need to make good choices and live within those reasonable constraints as the other teams are successfully doing. Best way to do that is to continually develop young players such as Beni, Devers and Chavis. It's also time that we see some of our young pitchers move forward. We are carrying Sandoval and Pedey this year without any value. Thats close to 15% of the budget. Lets hope we have learned, but I doubt it.
  6. Lots of people hit today. Lets see what happens against teams with better pitching. Be great if Bradley and Pearce round into form though.
  7. Somehow he got out of it while looking like Kimbrel, who often left us with a nervous attack. He managed to give one back and now we will have to fight to hang onto this one.
  8. It looks like its time to make a change. Maybe one of the younsters can come up and do bettter. Hard to do worse.
  9. I agree that the Sox have a plan for its young players and the cream will rise by its own performance. Getting into AA should be the goal and then a reassessment from there.
  10. Interesting kid and potential low cost CF replacement in the fold. Still has a long way to rise, but this is what was said this past week. Boston Red Sox prospect Jarren Duran has been named the Carolina League Player of the Week. The 22-year-old left-handed hitter went 12-for-27 with a homer, five doubles, eight RBIs and seven runs this past week. Duran is batting .406 with a .462 on-base percentage, .555 slugging percentage, 1.017 OPS, two homers, 11 doubles, three triples and 16 RBIs in 38 games (173 plate appearances). He’s 13-for-18 in stolen base attempts.
  11. Whe I saw the lineup today with Pearce, JBJ and Leon as our 7th, 8th and 9th hitters, I thought it would be our top 6 to provide any offense and that is a lot to ask. It turned out that our bottom third contributed today so overall se scored 12 runs. Toronto's pitching isn't much, but a win is a win. Chavis cntinues to impress.
  12. Here is a surprising stat. Of the regullar players with a significant number of plate appearances (I rule Nunez out of that list), who has struck out the most and who the least. The surprise is our leadoff hitter Beni has gone down 45 times. Equally surprising is that our catcher, Vazquez has only struck out 20 times. I wouldn't have guessed that at the beginning of the season.
  13. Most of us still believe the Sox have a solid chance for a wild card slot this year so want us to continue to put our strongest team forward and not start thinking of rebuillding. The move of Leon back and Hernandez down is a no brainer. Price should be back for Toronto and at that time sending Josh Smith down makes sense. I'm guessing Eovaldi comes back some time in early June and at that time possibly we lose Brewer. I'm wondering if briging Pedey back at all makes any sense. He appears to be fragile and is not likely to shake the rust off quickly. We have Chavis who while not a good fielding 2nd baseman is at least an acceptable hitter if not more and he is young and durable. Holt is another one of those fragile sorts that would take time to get up to speed and may not add more value than a Lin would. Bringing Johnson back is as a 6th pitcher to be used in spots. He should be given plenty of time to get his act together. He certainly is no answer for our pitching limitations.
  14. Our pitching performance tonight shows us how well Porcello pitched last night. No comparison. Their pitching has cooled off our hitting. Only Betts, Bogey and Vasquez hit well last night and we are off to a weak start. Some of our guys look overmatched. Maybe they will come to life but the hole is a big one.
  15. We do seem to get our daily surfeit of stats on this board. Be nice to see some conclusions from all of this.
  16. I have been an advocate of looking for a suitable replacement for a couple of years. Surely JBJ has value defensively, but his OPS is awful. For the money, maybe we could do better or if this kid Jarren Duran is for real, maybe we have a kid for less money who will become a better player than JBJ for next season. We need to find $ savings in order to keep our stars, so he may well be an alternative.
  17. If you read the in game thread its the flavor of the night. Last night Beni wasn't ever going to pan up being too fat. Betts was going through the motions. Tonight they were on base 6 times between them and it was Bogey and Devers not getting it done until the 10th. It's not wise to make judgments based on a single game or even several. It was 40 degs last night and perhaps some players reacted negatively. Just one possibility of many. Our lineup is solid with one or two exceptions. Our pitching has shown up fairly well considering where we started from. Eovaldi is going to be back in June and Price sooner. Chavis is hitting well enough to be our 2nd baseman and there is no need to rush Pedey back. I'm looking forward to playing the Astros.
  18. Let Pedey have more time to recover. Chavis is getting the job done. Not optimum, but better than other alternatives.
  19. I know it was cold for both teams last night but both Beni and Betts seemed to be impacted by it. Non one mentioned a play that I thought was another key. Bogie didn't react well on a ball hit to third and was forced out at 2nd by a whisker. If he ran hard from the get go, we have two on and Moreland's hit might have resulted inn two runs instead of one. On such plays, games are won and lost.
  20. Especially at 40 degrees
  21. I expect Pearce, Pedroia, Nunez and Holt to be gone in 2020. Moreland may still have a role as he is the best fielder at 1st still and is a professional hitter. His durabilitiy is more the question. As you say, I expect major changes in the infield and utility positions next season. Throw in Center field being up in the air and we certainly can expect lots of changes.
  22. That contract we gave him looks worse and worse. Like others have been saying, he may not play at all agaqin this year and be totally washed up. Too bad as he was a great player for us. We need to really move toward a young and capable everyday 2nd baseman. oubt we can afford one this year unless somebody emerges from the minors. Chavis doesn't appear to have the defensive finesse that we would like. Chatham? possibly.
  23. Just watching him isn't that encouraging. He appears lost up at the plate, swinging out of the zone and missing on many swings. He hasn't shown much yet, but we can hope more is coming. I doubt we try and replace him this year. Maybe give him more rest.
  24. They only expect 5 from him.
