  1. Nothing beyond the basics of being able to throw a baseball and swing a bat is a repeatable skill in baseball.
  2. It's like the PED thing. The owners know they shouldn't be signing those guys for the good of the game but they know they can't trust the other owners not to. They can't pass up that toy!
  3. NEVER. And unfortunately it's bleeding down to college ball too, but I do see it frequently called in high school ball, at least in my neck of the woods. And that's my issue. If they're not going to enforce it then they should admit it and take it out of the rules.
  4. Speaking of being realistic, and completely off the current topic(s)... What ever happened to enforcing the rule that a hitter has to make an effort to get out of the way of a pitch? I understand that it's difficult to have time to make an effort to get out of the way of a 100 mph FB - but players always do. However, when I see a player standing there and allowing himself to get hit with a 70 mph curve I find myself wondering why that rule doesn't get enforced.
  5. I'm certainly not in favor of offering Kimbrel a 5 year contract unless we could get him 'dirt cheap'. However, we shouldn't forget what someone else posted here some months ago when we were talking about this same thing. "Having a lights-out closer isn't important... until you don't have one." I don't usually like these opt-out contracts that are becoming popular now because when the player opts out the FO has to try to find someone else who'll be as effective as the guy they just lost, but at less money. It's counter-intuitive to think that's going to happen. But... given our 'window' - which IMO we have probably one more year in - I see Kimbrel as a prime candidate for one. If we're going to be going into mediocre rebuilding mode after 2019 or 2020 there's no point to our paying our closer$18-$20MM year while we're doing it.
  6. My son went to a school that started their baseball program during his Junior year. Shortly afterward he made the observation that when the baseball players showed up the average IQ in the school dropped 20 points.
  7. I was a fan of Bard for the same reason I am/was a Fan of Kelley. Both of those guys were blessed with great arms and both of them showed flashes of brilliance. When I see arms like that I keep hoping that there's some minor flaw in their motion that will make every performance like the brilliant ones. I hate to see arms like that go to waste. But it is what it is, unfortunately.
  8. No friggin' kidding! I posted elsewhere about good teams finding a way to win and bad teams finding a way to lose. Last year we were finding ways to lose. This year we're finding ways to win. That's one (but certainly not the only) reason why this team is so much better than last year's.
  9. Once they got rid of those lead-lined uniforms everything fell into place!
  10. I'm afraid you're right. As I said in the "disappointments" thread, I had high hopes for Kelley this year. I saw him as being our 'closer' in the 8th, shortening the game to seven innings. Right again, in the playoffs we need pitchers who can throw strikes. Very few things are more frustrating than seeing a reliever come in and walk people. I'd rather see them give up a hit than walk someone. At least if they're swinging the bat our defense might have a chance to turn that into an out. Right now Workman>Kelley.
  11. Hunker down and ride it out, Oldtimer. Like we did with Moon in Houston earlier, we're all going to be anxious to hear from you again. Good luck.
  12. I feel like I shouldn't be commenting on things like this any more. Every time I do I piss people off.
  13. It seems like for some reason some teams find a way to win while other teams find a way to lose. I've seen the Sox capitalize on a break to win this year just like I've seen teams commit an error to lose. It can be a strange game. Random, almost.
  14. These guys know more about baseball than we ever imagined existed.
  15. There were a dozen or so of us who couldn't handle the game threads so we made our own game threads on Chatzy and had a great time there. There was some negativity and frustration vented and a lot of positives but no 'over the top' stuff like there is on the GT's now. We did eventually have to give Pumpsie the boot though. I was surprised at the time that you (and slash) didn't get involved.
  16. I don't know how the radio & tv match up on other sports but there's sometimes a significant lag between the radio and tv for the Sox. Strangely it seems to vary between 5 and 10+seconds with radio first. No idea why, but it lets me pay half-attention to the tv until something happens on the radio, then I ... wait for it.
  17. I did. I will. Not only because I'm tired of the Yankee bag-sucking that goes on there, but because their coverage sucks. I don't turn on a baseball game to hear what color cotton candy is being consumed in the third row of section 13, and taking a full half inning to talk about it, and ignoring the game while they do it.
  18. So you've been converted?
  19. My biggest disappointment this year is Joe Kelley. I've always liked his velo and his stuff and he's been lights-out at times. I thought he'd turned the corner and had even considered that he might be the closer in 2019 Guess not.
  20. PLEASE don't tell me that ESPN is going to step in and change the game time for that matchup. I've had all the ARod I can stand for one season. In fact, last Sunday it was only a couple of innings before I switched over to 'Stiggy & Neveritt. The delay between radio and tv wasn't pleasant but it was better than the ESPN bunch.
  21. Frustrating. Just frustrating to see s*** like that happen.
  22. I got to the game late tonight. I see that the quality of the ESPN broadcast hasn't improved since the last Sunday night game. Ughhhhh
  23. Not at all. You asked what revolving door. There it is.
  24. Players with more than 25 innings @ 3B 2014 Bogaerts (44) Middlebrooks (62) [7 others] 2015 Holt (33) Sandoval (123) [6 others] 2016 Aaron Hill (42) T. Shaw (105) [7 others] 2017 Devers (56) Marrero (52) Sandoval (29) [7 others] 2018 Devers (102) Nunes (41) [4 others] In only two years since 2014 have the Sox had the same player get the majority of the innings at 3b. That was Devers in 2017 & 2018 and he's since been sent down. I'm not the one not giving Devers a chance. Blame that on the RS FO. Since Iggy came back from his "lost season" due to an injury he's averaged 128 games per season. That'll go up a little this month.
  25. Not according to Baseball Reference. I'm assuming those numbers came from Fangraphs. Mine came from Baseball Reference. Mine are as valuable as yours and yours are as valuable as mine. As I said earlier, it would be nice if one of those sources would (at least) change the name of their calculation so we could always be comparing apples to apples. It's very nice that you haven't missed Iggy. You must enjoy that revolving door we've had at 3B.
