  1. I agree. These players aren't as motivated as they might be were the games meaningful.
  2. We're talking about the playoffs now, the time of the season when pitching and defense are the premier commodities. If we don't win the WS I want it to be because we didn't score enough runs, not because we threw the game away with errors. As I have said before, a team simply cannot give a good team 'extra outs' in an inning and expect to win. I keep thinking back to 2013 when Iggy's error may very well have been responsible for the Tiger's bowing out of the playoffs.
  3. Because I have no faith in his defense in the early innings.
  4. I'm not sure I want him off the roster but I sure don't want him in the field. We could carry him as a PH, I guess.
  5. And of course that was the point of my somewhat tongue-in-cheek proposal to give the MVP award to the player with the highest WAR. All of these sabermetrics have done nothing more than cloud the issue of value even more. Entrusting the MVP award to the same people who refuse to vote for certain players into the HOF on the first ballot is wrong. These people are not only subjective, they're closed-minded and mean spirited. That brings up the question of, if the BBWAA isn't going to be voting for the MVP and the HOF, who is? WAR certainly isn't perfect but it may be better than having the writers and their subjectivity do it. At least we'd have criteria for the vote. That criteria may be 'fuzzy math' but at least it's something we could hang our hats on. Hmmm... maybe that idea isn't so tongue-in-cheek after all.
  6. Then are we in agreement that the player with the highest WAR should be the MVP?
  7. Maybe the problem is with our definition of "valuable". With all the reliance on sabermetrics and the lack of subjectivity in them, if we want to remove subjectivity from awards wouldn't it make the most sense to simply award the player with the highest WAR value the MVP award? Or do "valuable" and "WAR" not correlate?
  8. I don't see the problem. Just give the award to the guy with the highest WAR.
  9. No. Not possible at all. When the players win it's in spite of the manager and they lose it's because of him.
  10. Ouch! I wasn't aware of that. Thanks.
  11. This is ESPN we're talking about here. THEY DON'T CARE.
  12. In the event of an injury we can make an immediate roster change. The only downside is that the change has to be for the entire series. At least that's the way I understand it.
  13. I like that mean streak!! LOL
  14. At the risk of reopening that Pandora's box called "Clutch", I've often believed that ML pitchers are some of the most clutch people in the game. There are many pitchers with good stuff and good location but the difference between being clutch and not clutch is what separates the good ones from the bad ones. Picture this: Every pitch a pitcher throws has the potential for disaster. He not only has to throw a strike, to be really effective he has to be able to throw it to the exact spot he wants to. Now put yourself in a tie or one-run game where one mistake, one error by inches, can be the difference in the game. The good ones, the ones who are clutch, can do that a lot more frequently than the run-of-the-mill pitchers. That's why they're more successful.
  15. I wish I could take credit for this but I can't. Someone else posted it first but I'll repeat it because it's so true. "Not having a lights-out closer isn't a big deal... until you don't have one."
  16. Ugh. More "A-Rod & The Clown Car". I can't wait to hear how much better the Yankees are than the Red Sox or how much the fans in the bleachers LOVE the Betrmans's Ball Park Mustard and potato sticks - all while there's a ball game going on. ESPN should NEVER be allowed to broadcast a baseball game. And while we're on that topic, what in Hell are they doing with a known cheater PED user in the booth to begin with???
  17. He might - although I'd be surprised at that $12MM in his last year. Were I DD I'd be talking to him about security over the next five years and the opt out after 3 if he chooses. Since he's bound to the Sox through 2020 he's only bound to them for the additional 2021 season and he could test the market then.
  18. What he does the next two years is the big question. If he does well he'd probably do better than my 5/$50 "offer" but if he does worse than that those last two years could still be worth it depending on the market for GG-caliber CF'rs. I want buy out his two arb years with $8 & $9, then give him $10, $11 & $12 for the years after his arb years. They say that speed is the first thing to go. I have a lot of faith in his defense remaining outstanding because it's not based on his speed. It's based on the jump he gets and his ability to go to 'the spot'. If he doesn't exercise the opt-out because of sub-par offense during the first three years we've still got a GG CF running around out there and IMO that would be worth what he'd be getting.
  19. Top tier CF'rs (disregarding Trout) are getting an eyeball average of ~$10MM/year. IMO JBJ isn't in Trout's class @ $24MM but he's demonstrated the potential over the back half of 2018 to be in that top tier. He's making $6.1MM this year with (IIRC) two arb years left. I'd offer him 5 years at an average of $10MM backloaded, ($8, 9, 10,11,12) maybe with a player option after 3 years to try to exploit the down offensive years he's had. IMO if he keeps hitting like he has been during the last half of 2018 he'll get more than that on the open market after his arb years.
  20. If I'm DD I'm all over an extension for JBJ during this off season. The downside: If he reverts back to what he was early in this season we've got a GG CF who's hitting ~.200. The upside: If he's turned the corner offensively and has become what he's become lately we've got a GG CF with an OPS of ~.800. NOW is the time to sign him because if he HAS turned that corner - and I believe he has because of his approach and hitting the ball to the opposite field more now - there's no way we'd be able to sign both him and Mookie. Do it now.
  21. I see and appreciate what you're doing there but it raises a point. Those WARs are against a cross-section of hitters, essentially an average of all teams and hitters. It may not be realistic to think that, for example, Justin Verlander will perform as well against Mookie, JDM, & Co. as they do against the average teams. I like our offense better than anyone else's (except maybe the Y's in YS) so I'm optimistic. Another reason I'm optimistic is because of all the late inning scoring the Sox have done. It just may be that the Sox (like everyone else) will have trouble with other team's top pitchers but they can clean up against their bullpens. IMO it will be incumbent on our starters not to be shutdown guys but rather to keep the team in the game. The offense will take care of the rest later in the game. But shutdown is good too.
  22. Call me a fool then. I've been called worse.
  23. It's safe. It's out of our BP's hands now. IIRC the Magic Number for HFA is 2 and there's no way Houston isn't going to lose two games between now and the end of the season.
  24. Either he has or he hasn't. If he hasn't this is the longest 'hot streak' of his career so I like to think that he has. The biggest difference I've seen is his ability/willingness to hit to the left side of 2B. It also may be pertinent that Cora said a short while back that JBJ has now come on board with the coaching staff. (I'm paraphrasing. I don't have the exact quote). If he has it's good news/bad news. The good news is that he's now a GG caliber CF whom we can expect an OPS of .800+ next year. The bad news is that we may not be able to afford to keep him. Being someone who loves his defense I was (somewhat) hoping he'd continue to struggle at the plate so he could be signed at a lower salary when his arb years are over.
  25. If you mean to say Kinsler at 2B I agree with you. Now we're back to Devers, Holt and Nunez at 3B. Nunez is my choice because I like his offense and his defense better than I like the other two but he's still the ugly pup in the litter.
