  1. There's nobody on that staff I'd rather have going tonight. Not even Chris Sale - given the Sale's current iteration.
  2. Last season there were a few of us who were saying that Machado is a punk and some posters came to Machado's defense saying that he's a nice Christian boy and would never do such a dastardly thing as intentionally slide into Dustin Pedroia. The evidence is mounting that he's a punk and a dirty player. As he said in his own "defense" (if you can call this a defense), "I'm not the kind of player who's going to be Johnny Hustle". No, you're certainly not Johnny Hustle, Manny. Being Johnny Hustle is a good thing. You're more of a danger to everyone who plays the game. I hope he stays in the National League where he's at least not ruining the careers of other Red Sox players.
  3. Is it time to revive the "Should JBJ be traded?" thread?
  4. I'm very optimistic about game 3 after the win in #2. Like many teams, this team often has trouble hitting another team's #1 (or anyone who's 'on' that particular night) but they score runs when they get into the bullpens or when they get deep in the other team's rotation. We've not got Houston's #1 & #2 out of the way so I'm predicting crooked numbers on the scoreboard for the Sox on Tuesday night.
  5. This team misses Pedey in a BIG way.
  6. I don't think anyone goes to a game thread with the intention of bitching and complaining but when they see a bad or questionable play they have the need to enlighten the rest of us as to how bad the play was.. and it takes on a life of its own until the next questionable play. Remember, just about everyone here knows more about baseball than the players and Cora.
  7. I didn't think Bogaerts had a good enough angle on the ball to charge it and then make an off-balance throw while going away from 1B. Then when he got to the ball (deep in the hole) he didn't think he had enough arm to throw Correa out without setting his feet. Either way it would have been a great play if he'd made it and a terrible play if he'd thrown the ball away trying to make it. I saw it as a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't play. But that's just IMO, and ... whatever,
  8. The bigger question is how do you keep out the chronic complainers?
  9. In my state "worth" is described as 'what a willing buyer will give a willing seller in an arm's length transaction' when talking about real estate. That seems reasonable to me when talking about sale of tangible goods. However, in terms of hiring people to do a job I'd define 'worth' as the amount of money an employer can pay a prospective employee and expect to make a profit from the employee's labors. Of course the important word in that sentence is "expect". Sometimes those expectations are met and sometimes they aren't. When they're met the employer is the 'winner' and when they're not the one who gained from the transaction was the employee. And then there are situations that defy any rational description of 'worth'. As I've said before here, if a person discovered a drug that would prevent a person from ever having cancer he/she wouldn't make as much money in their lifetime as Mike Trout will.
  10. Getting back to Hernandez, there is a school of thought that may have some validity that Hernandez is umpiring in the playoffs this year because he's filed a discrimination suit against MLB, saying that he's being overlooked because 1) Joe Torre doesn't like him, and 2) he's a minority. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/19805392/umpire-angel-hernandez-sues-mlb-discrimination-treatment-joe-torre
  11. I have long been critical of David Price ("Price can get you to the playoffs but he can't get you out the other side") but at this point we're between the proverbial rock and a hard place. We need a win tonight and Price when he's "on" is the best pitcher we've got to go. Swallow hard, take a deep breath, and hope for the best.
  12. This.^^ It was exactly what I was thinking when he hit it.
  13. This post deserves a BIG upvote!
  14. Ya.. those "S" names confuse me. Thanks.
  15. You're feeding the troll, Bell. Feeding the troll......
  16. As I said that night, Kimbrel started a fire and then threw gasoline on it. He was lucky 1) That Severino's ball didn't make it to the wall (we're talking about millimeters on the bat) and he was lucky Nunez and Pearce had the ability to make very nice plays to put out the fire. Not all infielders make those plays.
  17. It's nice to look back on the results with the benefit if retrospect (is that redundant? LOL) but no matter how you slice it Kimbrel came in with a three run lead and managed to cut it to one run using two BB's and a HBP. Let's get real for just a moment. Kimbrel got lucky because those are things that a successful closer just can't be doing, especially against a good team. I know Cora is going to trot Kimbrel out there again because he's the designated closer and he's been successful in the past but please don't ask me to have the same amount of confidence in him that I had two or three months ago.
  18. Yeah, you're right. My bad. He probably wouldn't ruin more than a couple more of our guy's careers in the future.
  19. And if Sanchez' ball had carried another 25 feet everyone would be screaming "What was Kimbrel still doing out there? It was plain he had nothing!" Sports is very results-oriented.
  20. If there's one thing that can be said about Sox fans it's that we can hold grudges with the best of them! LOL
  21. I hope they don't get Machado. He's already ruined one of our players careers with his cheap shot. Think what he could do to the Sox roster in 19 games.
  22. My thought.. .word for word.
  23. The real issue here is the quality of umpiring and how technology has caught up with umpiring. The fact is, we didn't know how good or bad some of those umps are until we started having the Pitch Zones on television. IMO the real and more practical solution is to continually make human umpiring better. It'll never be perfect but the umpires need to be making strides to make it better. I see the solution as being fairly simple. People respond to an incentive and if the incentive to umpires is keeping their jobs by preventing robo-umps they'll do better. If they don't respond to that incentive it'll be difficult for me to feel badly for them when robo-umps become the norm.
  24. I don't know if umpires are any better or worse than they used to be in the days before the K-Zone, Amica Strike Zone or whatever Is there as much scuttlebutt about robo umps throughout baseball as there is on this site? If so it's time for the Umpires Union to sit up and take notice. The best way they can protect themselves and their jobs is by getting better at what they do. If they don't do that they'll soon be replaced by a machine. Step # 1 should be to identify the worst of the umpires and either get them retrained or replace them. That will give the umps an incentive to do better.
  25. I thought TBS' Pitch Zone did Hernandez a favor because it wasn't as clear as the one on NESN where the pitches were. I know we have a knee-jerk reaction to give umps the benefit of doubt but I saw quite a few pitches that I thought were out of the strike zone and called strikes. The pitch Beni was called out on and Beni's reaction is a prime example.
