  1. You're sure? Really? Have you completely ruled out the possibility that everyone was in agreement as to Hanley's behavior? The last I knew you were in the camp of anything being possible and we never know what goes on within a team in the clubhouse.
  2. I've always believed that there are A LOT of things that go on in the clubhouse that aren't reported. There is an unwritten code amongst players that "what happens in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse". It's the job of the manager to mediate differences and - especially in this day and age - keep those differences away from the media. One of the things that 'bugged me" about Hanley was how he was always preening for the camera and I always wondered how his attention-gathering was 'playing' with the rest of the team. Since there were 24 other players in the clubhouse and everyone has different perspectives it's my guess that some of them didn't find Hanley's antics to be entertaining, especially when he went into his batting slump. It's been pointed out to me that we never KNOW what happens in the clubhouse so my opinion is as good as anyone else's and my opinion is that Hanley's attention-craving and its impact on other members of the team was one of the issues involved in his being released.
  3. This post is spot-on. When is the last time you heard someone say, "I wish I had more problems in my job." Little distractions are big headaches for a coach, headaches they neither want nor need. Cora's biggest (IMO) job as manager is to manage the clubhouse and managing the clubhouse is easier when the players are happy. Cora seems to be bridging the gap between the FO and the players very well, taking care of brush fires before they become conflagrations. He's maintaining harmony in the clubhouse which makes the players want to play for one another. They've bonded as a unit and they're having fun. And it shows in their play. I'm fairly certain that someone will respond to this with some anecdote about a Yankees team that hated one another but won, but the fact that teams like that can be remembered proves that they're the exception and not the norm.
  4. Manny is not "a fierce competitor who plays all out". Manny is a thug, a dirty player and a cheap-shot artist. He doesn't deserve your glorification.
  5. I don't disagree with anything that's here regarding team chemistry, picking one another up, having fun, etc., etc., etc., but I also always remember that winning cures a lot of ills.
  6. I'm picking the Sox in 5 because if they can win it before midnight they'll have done it on my birthday. They missed it in 2004 by winning the WS ~20 minutes too early. :-(
  7. Is membership still open for that group? I know I may be in the minority but I happen to like Joe Buck both as a football and a baseball announcer. Plus he does some great interviews on the Audience channel.
  8. I can't find a link to back this up but Satchel Paige, when asked how he felt about not being able to play against the greatest players of his time is reputed to have replied, "What makes you think I didn't?"
  9. Oops. I was gone all day yesterday (as I'm going to be today). I guess that'll teach me to read the entire thread before I post! LOL Thanks.
  10. Why is it more logical for JBJ to sit, move Mookie to CF and have JDM in RF than having Beni sit and just put JDM in left? The first option weakens two defensive positions but the second one only weakens one.
  11. The situation with Kimbrel may not be as dire as we thought and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned in this thread. I've heard from several different sources that a friend of Cora's contacted him after Wednesday's game and told him that K was definitely tipping his pitches. This guy caught it on TV! When he was in the 'set' position his hands were higher when throwing the curve than when throwing the fast ball (or the opposite - I forget). Once he realized it he worked on it a bit on Thursday, and Voila! The Kimbrel of old pitched on Thursday night. Has anyone else heard this?
  12. And you have nothing to back up your viewpoint that the players aren't/weren't upset except that they haven't made a public issue of it - which a good teammate wouldn't do anyway.
  13. What??? No it doesn't, because your point is that it's overblown assumes the players aren't upset, and we have no way to know that. As with just about everything in life "none of us have the entire story" so we have to assume that one person's viewpoint is no more valid than another's. I base my opinion on my viewpoint, that of the people I've talked with about it, and Butterfield's reaction to the question. I think that's solid. Others may not.
  14. Had these people who posted links talked with the players or their friends to get other opinions, or were they just their own personal opinions? Personally, I find it hard to believe that anyone who's played competitive sports (successfully) would condone one player throwing the rest of his team under the bus. But maybe that's just me... and the people I've talked with.... and Brian Butterfield, who completely dodged the question when put to him.
  15. The only way we can gauge that would be to talk to the players and (IMO) they'd be reluctant to throw Pedey under the bus so we'll never know. The fans I talk with are still pretty upset about it. They've neither forgiven nor forgotten but they're willing to put it behind them for the sake of the game.
  16. Obviously the Sox were right to pass on Papelbon but it's not realistic to base all negotiations for closers on Jonathan Papelbon. How old was Rivera when he signed his last contract?
  17. That's the true generation gap. You immediately run to Google while I just sit around wondering.
  18. Thanks. I was wrong about that, also. I thought he got signed to a FA contract that expired after the 2018 season.
  19. Because a player's contract isn't about what he did one week in October, it's about what he's done over his career. Lots of players are getting what Softlaw used to refer to as "wheelchair contracts" because GM's don't learn from observation. Case in point: Pablo Sandoval who was overweight and on the downside of his career. If Kimbrel puts together a couple of solid high-stress innings in the WS he may have a couple of more good years in him and somebody will offer him a lot of $$ because of it. With another season in our 'window' DD just may decide that the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know and sign Kimbrel to one of those wheelchair contracts. I hope not, but I can see how it could happen.
  20. Why doesn't that surprise me?? LOL
  21. Just call 'em the Brewers & be done with it! I'm still struggling with Evoldi...Eavolidi.. wtf ever!! LOL
  22. IF Kimbrel pitches in the WS like he did last night letting him go in favor of Evoaldi would be a gutsy move.
  23. Ahhh.. thank you! You friggin' kids know everything!!
  24. Do we have BB for six years? I thought he was a FA pickup.
  25. He's another guy we should try to sign next year. We had two pitchers trying to rebuild their career that DD took a chance on mid-season and they're both now pitching in the World Series. It would be nice if we could sign at least one of them. It would also be nice if at least one of them would recognize what the Sox organization did for them and price themselves accordingly. That probably won't happen but if it id we'd have ourselves a quality individual there.
