  1. It is a dump. I took a "victory tour" the year I retired and got to every city in the ALE except Toronto and the Trop is by far the worst one.
  2. I'm noticing that there are several of us here from Maine who post (including Moon when on vacation) and I'm wondering if there's any interest in some of of us meeting up for a Sea Dogs game this summer. I'm thinking it should be an afternoon game since many of us old guys don't like to drive after dark. LOL And of course anyone from other states is welcome too. We don't discriminate up here in the great Northeast! I'm willing to do the coordinating if there's enough interest. Get back to me if this sounds good.
  3. YES!!! That in itself will endear him to me forever. IIRC he obviously tried twice to hit ARod and failed, and when he hit him on the 3rd try the umpire refused to throw him out of the game. That's one of my great moments in baseball!!
  4. At the risk of sounding really stupid - which somehow has never bothered me before! LOL - wasn't Conley also the guy who played for the Celtics?
  5. I can remember when I heard that we'd signed CC. My attitude about it then was, meh.. ok.. but I don't understand why. There were only two reasons I could think of for signing him and they were both bad ones. The first was because they didn't expect to be able to re-sign Ellsbury and they saw CC as his replacement and they felt they had to sign him when he was available. There was also a lot of chatter at that time that the Yankees were interested in him and I thought then - and still do think - that one of the underlying reasons for signing him was to keep him away from the Y's. Like I said.. two bad reasons, but they did it anyway.
  6. Ryan Dempster 2013 as our #5 guy - 171 IP in 29 starts with an ERA of ~4.5. That's about 6 IP and 3 ER's per start, a/k/a a quality start. I'll take that from my #5 guy every time. Yeah, we probably could have signed someone for cheaper money and not won the AL East. And then as if to do the Sox the ultimate favor he retired and walked away from a contract that would have paid him $13M the next year. You'll never hear me say anything bad about Ryan Dempster.
  7. That reminds me of a study Cliff Clavin quoted.
  8. In an absolute sense, yes. But our pal Harmony has proven over and over again that something can be found to discredit - or enhance the image of - just about everyone if one looks for it. Studies are like that.
  9. Pouring. NESN TV. Cats 'n' dogs. :-(
  10. I sometimes think that this board needs a "thumbs up", and this is one of those times.
  11. I hear what the numbers state, but at the same time I've also seen (here?) that there are studies that say that your "best" hitter should be hitting 1st, 3rd, or 4th. That seems to confirm what I've learned, that if someone wants to prove something there will be studies there to confirm it. My personal opinion FWIW and not confirmed by any studies is that a team should have it's best OBP hitter batting first, the hitter with the best OPS 3rd, and the best HR hitter batting 4th. Which leaves the problem of what to do when one hitter qualifies for two - or even three - of those spots? And isn't that where we are with Mookie?
  12. The only one hotter than the Sox right now is SoxHop. Keep up the good mojo!
  13. I don't see Price pitching a shutout (I hope I'm wrong) so those 2 more runs are big. Tell me again.. what's our record when we score 4 or more?
  14. There's a reason Hanley looks bad running the bases. He IS bad.
  15. That's an easy question. Then we change things up! I often subscribe to the old philosophy of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I just don't want to mess with this lineup as long as we're scoring runs. When we're not scoring runs anymore is the time to fix the problem. Until then it's not a problem.
  16. And can we please give Moreland some credit for being there and making the tag? Pedey's play was the flashiest but it was a two-pronged great play.
  17. I certainly can agree with this. Sometimes the best moves are the ones that aren't the flashiest ones. As I posted in another thread, I believe DD recently made a trade that will help the Sox tremendously in avoiding that much dreaded "cliff" when he traded three players for more International signing money, and it flew mostly under the radar. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/red-sox-acquire-international-bonus-money-from-reds.html Evidently Longhi was the centerpiece of the deal(s) and that was made possible by the team's depth at 1B with both Sam Travis and Josh Ockimey sandwiched around Longhi. Interesting point (to me, anyway!) about Longhi. He's mentioned as being the best pure hitter hitters in the Sox system in spite of his having little power. So what's he doing at 1B where power is a ++ attribute?
  18. I feel blessed to be a Red Sox fan. I often think about the fans of teams who know on June 1 that their team is going noplace. These people who come to those games must be true baseball fans. Well.. all but in Tampa Bay in the past. Those people are just jerks. NOBODY should be allowed to bring a cowbell to a ball game!
  19. Please don't try to convince me that you felt sorry for Joba when they let the gnats loose on him in Cleveland though.
  20. I've been thinking about this kind of thing myself. There's usually a transition period between AAA and MLB when a player's "holes" are found and he has to make adjustments. Are we going to be patient with Devers if he comes up and struggles with that transition period in the middle of a pennant race? My opinion FWIW is that Farrell is that since Marrero is hitting now the FO is going to ride that horse until it drops... if it does. And if it doesn't (long shot) everything is great!
  21. I think this may revolve around what a person's definition of "best" is. During the years when "my" teams were the most successful we had a guy who didn't have the highest average on the team but when he got a hit it was usually an XBH, and he drove in a lot of runs. I've often told people that 'Xxxx' is the best #3 hitter I ever played with, but he wasn't the best hitter on the team.
  22. Didn't that ARod fiasco consist of ARod getting the same amount of money to come to the Sox, only over a longer time? Or is it the AAV that the Union objects to?
  23. OMG I don't want to see that guy out there for a dozen consecutive games! I've seen Lin and Marrero make plays in the past few games that Pablo could only dream of making. Please, DD. Do not give up defense at 3B just to save face.
  24. There's another issue with this too, and it's their union. I don't know how/if they can prevent a player signing for less money than his current contract allows but I'm very confident that they "very strongly discourage" it.
  25. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do! Probably one of the reasons I like that line so much is because it suddenly brings everything back into perspective.
